Feeling good at the Grocery Store

Postby ristian77 » Thu Mar 08, 2007 12:55 am

I just got back from running to the grocery store to buy eggs, yogurt, fruit, and some veggies. I realized as I was walking around the store and watching what other people were picking up, I felt really good about myself. I know that might sound awful  .....but, I find myself feeling good about no longer being in the grocery store to buy ice cream for after dinner, or a pizza to throw in the oven for a quick dinner. Its not that I feel superior really, its just that it reinforces how much better I feel now that I'm following this WOE. Anyone else experienced this situation??

don't blush..you aren't alone. Many of us, myself included, turn into shopping cart snobs, rubbernecking to catch a glimpse of other people's choices and wrinkle our noses in disgust..lol! Consider it a new hobby.

I totally agree, the first month I was on SB I really noticed it. I would get to the check out with all my healthy stuff and look at the cart behind me and think oh my god, I can't believe the junk they have in there. I even came home and mentioned it to my husband (who is also on SB) and he said, " honey that was your cart before we started this WOE" and he was right. I guess I just never thought mine looked that bad.
Now I've been on SB ...hmm, oh boy my 6th month anniv. is coming up. Anyway, I don't pay that much attention to others carts now because I'm in a habit of pretty much buying the same thing each time...protein, fruit, veggies, yogart..you know the good stuff.
I'm sure people that have all the junk in their cart probably look at mine and think "that poor thing look at all the rabbit food she has in there...and her poor family doesn't get anything good to eat! They couldn't be more wrong...My family and I are the lucky ones ....I only wish I could stop all these people and introduce them to SB!

Glad to know I'm not the only 'shopping cart snob' out there.

Boy, I'm glad to hear all of yall are having the same "snob" experience. I hate holier-than-thou folks and I thought I was turning into one. It's funny, but I think the unhealthy cart people look at my veggie-laden buggie and feel sorry for me! Do they go home and tell their husbands, "Honey, I saw this lady in the grocery store, and all she had in her cart were peppers, broccoli and some ground turkey -- nothing good at all! I'd hate to live at her house."

That exact thing happened at Longhorn Steakhouse last night. We were eating at the bar (watching basketball) and the man next to me had a big ole ribeye with baked potato slathered in all sorts of stuff, a couple of beers, all that bread and butter. I had a grilled shrimp appetizer atop a bed of lettuce instead of the rice with a bit of dressing on the side. It was SO good, and the man next to me said, "Man, that's a pitiful looking meal." He didn't know I was looking at his plate and thinking the same thing!

Count me in as a cart snob too. LOL...

although when I didn't have the healthy cart, I never thought "oh those poor people"... My thought was more along the line of "wow, that's a disgustingly healthy cart... i wish I were that disciplined" and now, I AM! :)

I am very proud of myself when I get to the register and realize I only have healthy food in my cart. I know that I am being good to myself and hubby.

I like to fantasize that people are looking at all the whole, raw foods in my cart and thinking, "Well, would you look at that! A young professional that cooks from scratch!"

I doubt they actually do though. :)

Oh, boy, do I want to do that sometimes!!! Actually the last time wasn't at a grocery store. It was at a cell phone store, and this really fat employee walked in with a big Wendy's Frosty. I just wanted to walk up to him and rip it fronm his hand and dump it out and say 'Gee, and you probably wonder why you look the way you do!', but I didn't.

Yes, I do now look at what's in other people's carts.

And, when I go to check out, I do think that someone might be thinking something about what I'm getting, but it's a little different than what everyone else here has said. My husband and I are very poor, and get Food Stamps. I always think that the cashier is thinking that 'well, at least there's one person on food stamps that eats healthy', or 'at least she's not wasting her food stamps on junk food' [like i'm sure a lot of other people do- believe you me,I've seen some of the stuff some people on FS buy].

I can't quote you any references, but I remember in an environmental studies class I took hearing about a plan some communities had to partner with local famers and make food stamps worth double their normal value if spent for fresh produce from a farmers' market. Wouldn't that be awesome?

ooohhh, that would be wonderful!!!!
I've never actually been to a farmers' market. i always thought they would be two far out of the way, or I never know when they're open and stuff, but I now know of two that are basically on my way to the grocery store (depends on which way I go), and I know for sure one takes FS and I think the other one does, too. I can't wait to go to them and see what they're like (they sound pretty cool).
