I am a "meat eater" as you called us earlier. :) But have been interested in vegetarian for quite a while but with a hubby and 2 kids I haven't been completely sure how to convert myself (or if I totally want to)..

However I saw many different terms refering to different types of vegetarianism :?: Could someone please list ALL the different names and what the differences are between each?

Thanks.

Hi quacky.

Essentially:
1. Pescatarian - no meat except for fish (which is meat, darnit!) :)
2. Semi-veg (or a 'flexatarian... I don't know where they come up with this)- someone who likes to eat vegetarian but is not adverse to eating meat.
3. Lacto-ovo veg - No meat/fish, but eat eggs and dairy (take off lacto for no dairy, take off ovo for no eggs)
4. Vegan - no meat, no eggs, no dairy, nothing processed with animal derivatives, and in my opinion, a LIFESTYLE, not a diet. If you are a vegan, great, but if you simply eat a vegan diet, I believe it's different.

And then there is a raw vegan (unprocessed vegan, nothing over a certain degree in F... I think 105 or something?)

Macrobiotic, also unprocessed vegan, but allows some fish. No sugar, nothing refined.

lorka,

thank you for your response. That helps a bunch. In that case, should I decide to eat more "vegetarian like" I would probably be a flex-vegetarian.. I like some meats but would definitely prefer to eat them much less often.

quacky - you're welcome. i found that when i started to dislike meat (naturally), i soon became more aware of vegetarianism, and made the transition to being meat-free, with my knowledge. i stopped being so 'sheltered' from it... ignoring the realities.

have fun! it's a great discovery, and you might find that you want to fully transition (or not), but you'll probably open your mind a lot. that's what I found.

I found this site quite a while ago but have never made anything from it:
http://www.fatfree.com/recipes/

Certainly adjustments are needed to make many of the recipes SBD friendly but they are generally simple:
use ww products, brown rice
drop flour as a thickener
drop or substitute another veggie for corn

If yout ry any recipes and like you might want to post in the recipe section.

What to do?

Postby aweea » Tue Jul 18, 2006 6:21 pm

Can you share some ideas and recipes on what to do with 'veggie' ground beef?

I was thinking about having zucchini parmesan with faux 'meatballs' on the side...but I don't know how to make the meatballs - more importantly, how to make them P1 friendly.

If I can't do the meatballs, then I'm thinking of cooking some of it with taco seasoning, mixing with some beans and roasted veggies and stuffing it in a pepper, topped with a little cheese.

Any thoughts?

i don't use the pseudo-meat products, but i make a similar dish to what you described but using tvp. so i don't see why it wouldn't be delicious! :)

Just wanted to say hello...I was vegetarian for 12 years, and became pescatarian since moving to Hawaii a few years ago. I'm one of those people who substituted pasta and bread for meat, so I gained lots of weight (especially in college).

My love affair with vegetables has been reignited since starting SB last week, and last night I made these tasty Smoked Mozzarella Eggplant Rolls:

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that those were my photos and recipes! Those were just something I found the other night when I was looking for something to do with an eggplant. That blogger has a lot of good recipes, however!

Hello one and all. I can remember who I sent my phase 1 and phase2 vegetarian and vegan recipes to but whoever you are I just got 40+ more pages of recipes from assorted friends and you might like them. The sent an amazing assortment including some tofu cause they know I'm looking for some for this board. PM me if you want them (even if you aren't the one who originally asked me)

questions out of curiousity:

1. do you prepare meat (for others)?
2. would you eat, for example, a vegetarian alternative cooked on the same grill as a hamburger?
