wow, well I grew up going camping with my cousins all summer. It was their popup and tent that we all used. it was a big pop up as pop ups go. it slept 8. to wings and two tables. with a stove in the center. we never used it though. we always cooked outside.

we spent the summer, swimming, boating on a creek that lead to a river. on weekends we would take the big boat out to the ocean and go fishing. I remember going into like a channel or something and swimming off the boat. NOw I would never do that. but hey we were kids. I tried water skiing once or twice but didnt really like it. crabbing was my favorite. most of my cousins were boys. so I had to bait and hook my own line and also remove and gut my own fish. when we crabbed we didn't use cages. we used string and fish heads. did I say that was my favorite. WE camped mostly near the jersey shore. and would go into Ocean City now and then to the board walk. But, it was fun but it was just as fun not to go. I actually liked Brigatine the best.

I remember fishing off a train bridge and having to run everytime a train would go by. I also remember one favorite camping ground I think in Delaware that we had a cabin and a popup and tent. because there were like 4 families camping together. anyway, we had like this private dock to fish or crab off of. and in the woods we played all sorts of gang chace and man hunt type stuff. well anyway. I jumped from this bridge and landed on a board that had a rusty nail sticking up in it. oh my right into my foot and I think out the other end. my cousing a guy pulled it out of me board and all. then two of them carried me home(back to camp.) I had to go to the hospital to get a tetnus shot of course. but, I ended up being ok. don't remember any other tragedys in all the years we camped.

I know what you mean about college days etc. I stopped going in college. then when I had my first born and he was a baby we were both pretty sick. so we didn't go then either. then it was just to much work with babies. and by the time my kids were old enough to go and enjoy it. my mom had sold her trailer. she by that time had a big one and it was permanent at the camp ground they were then going to. they had moved from the ones we use to go to and did this seasonal thing at some strange one.(strange for me) there was no water there except at the pool. just not the same for me.

Also, I went snow camping in Lancaster area in Pa. with friends in High school and man It was snowy and cold. I like camping in the summer much better.

dh and I did go camping three times with our kids. twice in NJ and once in Pa. my dd only remembers once in NJ. We have a great tent. but, dh had medical problems and couldnt' be in the heat and couldn't breath. so we never went after that.

we went to a retreat center a few times. where you stay in a room w/air. they had lots of woods and a lake etc. but it just insn't the same as camping really.

WE hoped to go this year before ds went to college. but, it isn't happening. So, now I have hope for the future sometime Thanks to you! :D .

my dh was one of 7. they never went anywhere special for summer vacation and he really doesn't have the passion for camping I have. He would go because it is a great family time to bond etc. and becasue I like it but he doesn't really have a passion for it. and he hates the water. so boats are not his thing.

I told ds one regret I have is his never going out on a boat for fishing. he said he would do it on a charter boat one day and for me not to worry about it. isn't he great!

I guess really anything we wanted to do with them as kids or they wanted to do as kids and didn't get to do they can do themselves now as adults.

LB,
join right in! I was actually born in Panama City, FL - dad was stationed at Tyndall AF Base; but we moved to Colorado when I was about 5 or 6 months old & I've lived here ever since. When my dad's dad was still alive, he & Grandma lived in Sarasota/Bradenton, so when I was about 12 or 13, we spent about 3 weeks traveling around FL. Dad and brother went out with Grandpa on a fishing boat, but mom & I stayed home with Grandma....I've always wanted to try the "deep sea" fishing & snorkeling & such....I was always such a water baby growing up... although I'm not really anymore!

YB,
It sounds like you have a lot of great childhood memories, too. When we camped here around home, it was always just dad, mom, brother & me...most of my cousins lived in Nebraska, so since they didn't come out here much, we never really camped with them. There's so many of us cousins on my mom's side (she's one of 10 kids & I have about 30 cousins) that it would have been major hassles for the parents, but big time fun for us kids!

Instead, we used to travel to Nebraska every Memorial Weekend. My one aunt & uncle has a cabin on a lake near North Platte & we would cram about 25 people into a 3 bedroom cabin and various tents & campers for about 4 days. That one bathroom was always in use! We used to fish quite a bit, and us kids would pull them out of the lake faster than my dad & uncle could clean them up! The cabin sits in a cove, so we would have almost the entire cove to fish & swim (the other cabins in the cove did mostly water skiing out on the main part of the lake, so once their boats were gone, we'd jump in for a swim. Now it's like eeeewwww, we swam in that? Never tried water skiing, although I always wanted to, but would go out into the boat to fish & dad had a canoe that we would paddle all over the place. After the weekend, we would all travel back to Hastings, NE (where my mom's from & most of her siblings still live) to stay for a week or so to visit Grandma & Grandpa & everyone who couldn't make it to the cabin. We'd get together at one of the local parks and have a huge fish/chicken fry with our fish catches from the weekend. My uncle is now in his 80's and my aunt in her late 60's and his health is starting to fail, so there's talk of selling the cabin since his boys don't live in the state. Kind of sad to think that such a wonderful place full of memories won't be in the family anymore. Some of my cousins who live in Hastings have talked of buying it to keep it in the family, but don't know how they'll be able to afford it...maybe if we all went together & uncle let us make payments... DH & I just don't get back there often enough to make it worth our money, though. And once Grandma's gone (she's 97), we'll probably go even less.....

We used to snorkel at John Pennecamp Coral Reef off of Key Largo. We would also put on masks/snorkels/fins and swim WAY out to the shrimp boats to see what we could see. We swam with barracuda and sharks and it never frightened me (I must have been a crazy kid, and, in retrospect, I wonder why my Dad was not scared to take us way out there like that. I guess it's because he figured they would be busy eating fish, and also because we had a bang stick and shark repellant just in case). I remember one really scary time we swam right though a swarm of jellyfish. Thankfully, none of us got stung! We used to set out lobster traps to catch our supper, and we would spearfish. We always cooked outdoors and slept in a tent, no camper for us.

As an adult, the only camping I've done is as a Girl Scout Leader. We slept in platform tents or even cabins, though, so we weren't roughing it. We did learn how to do lots of outdoor cooking, which the girls loved. We also did trailblazing and orienteering.

Now that sounds like my kinda vacation place!!! I know... how about you all buy me the cabin for my 50th birthday... well, okay I'm only 47 now... but you could give it to me for an early 50th birthday gift. After all, it's the thought that counts. How 'bout it? Sounds like a good plan to moi!

Well, Lynda,

If we all started paying on it now, maybe it would be almost paid off by the time you hit your 50th! Property is pretty cheap in Neb., you know, and it is a pretty OLD cabin, so how much could it be?

I really hope some of your cousins could buy the cabin. it sounds wonderful and the tradition could continue on with their kids.

my MIL AND FIL'S house was up for sale and one of my dh's brothers bought it just to keep it in the family. they have fixed it up and want to sell it next year or so. We would love to buy it but there is no way we could. We will miss it greatly when it is no longer part of our family. But, the memories will never die or part from us.

Lyndab, what would you do with a cabin. your the rustic tent hiking girl. no cabin for you. we don't want you to become a softy.

Actually, years ago, although there was an attached "bathroom", it had no running water...you had to pour water in the toilet to "flush" it down (and the waste would go out to a septic system--TMI, I know) and you had to pour water into the sink to wash your hands....heat up water in the kitchen to "sponge bathe" and to do dishes with. Can you imagine how smelly us kids were with just a sponge bath after being in a "fishy" lake all day? EWWW.

They just had a well drilled about 10 years ago & now have a flushable toilet, water for the kitchen and *gasp* a shower!

uh...how embarrassing....I start a journal to keep track of my SB goals & make myself toe the line! Here I am goofing off....oh well, WTH, got to have fun too, right? Keeps my stress level waaayyy down.

Anyway, didn't get home & into bed until 12:40 this a.m., so was lazy & slept late & didn't get up in time to do my walking ***kicking self***
We went to see the movie Ray last night at Red Rocks....I'm sure redroxco has familiarized everyone with this place - it's a beautiful outdoor amphitheatre in the foothills above Denver - as you look out above the top of the stage area, you can see the lights along the front range....romantic to snuggle up with your significant other & watch the moon, stars & enjoy the beautiful summer nights.

Today's meals:

B: stopped for a non-fat, sf vanilla latte at Starbucks w/ DH then a ww quesadilla w/ scrambled eggs, lf cheddar, onion & green chili
S: a few grapes
L: steamed veggies (no sauce, thank you very much) & steamed brown rice from the Chinese restaurant next door
S: Apple w/ laughing cow
D: I have some lamb chops in the freezer...sounds pretty good. I'll buzz over to Palombo's (local farmer's market) before I head home & pick up some fresh veggies & some Rocky Ford cantelope to go with the chops. I think it's time for roasted green chilis, too, so I'll probably get some & make chili relleno casserole later this week.
S: Maybe some peaches or strawberries w/ a little cool whip

Thanks for the laughs today, ladies! See you tomorrow!

BTW,
note to self:

Quit being so cheap & go buy some smaller black denim jeans & then you won't have to walk around all day pulling your pants back up! :P

Can't believe it's Thursday already & the day's almost over!

My folks just dropped DD off here at my office on their way back from the camping trip in the mountains. She had a great time and didn't want to come back, but the folks have to days to get ready before they leave with one of mom's cousins to drive down to Durango to ride the Silverton-Durango Steam train & just generally bum around for a week. Retired people.....

Today's gone pretty well:

B: Kashi GL w/ strawberries & ff milk
S: 6 triskets w/ lf laughing cow
L: Grilled chicken caesar salad (about 3 C. spring salad mix w/ about 7 small strips of grilled chicken, handful of grape tomatoes & about 1/3 of a cucumber sliced up, sprinkle of shredded parmesan and caesar salad dressing)
S: apple & pb
D: Grilled sirloin steak w/ grilled veggies & salad
S: Maybe a pear or some strawberries

Well, I'm off to LyndaB's journal to give her wishes for a speedy recovery!

Well, it was a tough weekend, dealing with MIL's health issues.....tried to stay as beachy as possible

Saturday
B: Usual Sat. morning trip to Starbucks w/ DH, DD & Auntie....had a small bowl of Kashi GL w/ ff milk & sliced peaches before we left.
S: none
L: none - I know....bad. We ended up taking MIL to Marshalls & Ross and also DD to Borders book store for some new reading material (they are required to do so many minutes per week of reading for school) and we went to Gart Sports to pick up a badmitton/volleyball set and some other "gamey" type stuff for kids & adults for the "end of summer" bbq we will be having next Sunday.
S: none
D: Went to the Armidillo--had chicken fajitas (skipped the tortilla) & iced tea (did have a sip of FIL's peach margarita...yum)

Drank tons of water all day, though....

Sunday:
B: WW toast w/ pb
S: slices of cucumber & red pepper (went to the local farmer's market)
L: More fresh veggies & a peach
S: None
D: grilled buffalo steak, grilled zuchinni, cauliflower, eggplant, yellow squash; grilled tomato stuffed w/ a little mozzerela
D: fudgesicle

It's so sad to see MIL's health deteriorating so quickly....I was thinking last week to myself that she'd probably be gone by next spring...after this weekend, I'm just hoping she makes it through the holidays.....

You know, you hear so many people complain about their MIL's and my own often says "I'm the MIL from Hell" or "I'm the reason they invented the word MIL", but she truly is a wonderful person & I feel so sorry for those who don't get along with theirs. My MIL is also my good friend & we spend lots of time together.

I am truly priveledged to have known & loved my MIL for the last 14 years & I wish it would be 40 more...but I know that, realistically, it won't be much longer. I have to be strong for my DH, FIL & Auntie (MIL's sis) because I know they will fall apart. Sometimes I get so tired of having to be the strong one....there have been days recently that I have fallen apart.
