whole wheat wraps or pita bread

Postby jhtnc » Wed Feb 25, 2004 4:07 pm

I have seen several whole wheat wraps/shells and whole wheat pita bread but they all have "enriched" flour or something "enriched". I'd love to know (for those of you who have used the wraps or pita bread) the brands you have found that don't say "enriched". I've not seen any and I've seen lots of whole wheat wraps and pita bread. Thanks.

You'll be hard pressed to find pita, even whole-wheat pita, that does not have enriched flour in it. I think it's kind of like the "glue" that holds the whole wheat together! You'll also notice that most 7 and 12 grain breads have enriched flour as well.

At any rate, I still go for it. Usually what you eat with it (not to mention the whole wheat/grains portion of the bread) lowers the glycemic index considerably. It's not like eating a slice of white bread that is almost pure enriched flour.

i found a stone ground whole wheat pita (no enriched flour) at Weis. They are paper thin. 4 for 99 cents. Not sure where you live, but I know Weis and Mr. Zs (I think that's the name) are affiliated. I can't find the tortillas around me, but La Tortilla Factory is a name brand people seem to mention a lot on this plan. Good luck!

Thanks - I knew I wasn't finding anything without "enriched" in it and I forgot that eating it with other things helps the GI.

I found 100% Whole Wheat Pita at Trader Joe's. The brand is "Aprocryphal". Listed ingredients are -- 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Barley Malt, Cultured Wheat Starch and Salt. 1 Pita has 80 Calories--13 Net Carbs, and 1 Gram Fat.

I also found "LaTortilla Factory" Green Onion Tortillas at my local market. It contains: Whole Wheat Four, Water, Oat Flour, Soy Bean Flour,&cold Pressed Canola Oil. It has 50 calories in 1 Tortilla--2 Grams of Fat--and 3 Net Carbs.

I agree witht the person who posted that we all must be losing weight just shopping for this diet. LOL

Hope this helps

Josef's makes a 100% Whole Wheat pita without enriched flour. You can buy them at Hannaford Bros. and Market Basket (depending on whether you have these 2 stores in your area.)

Also, I have found a brand at Bi-Lo called Toufayan Bakeries Pitettes. They are small whole wheat pitas with no enriched flour. They also taste great.

What I've been using for my Phase II wraps are whole wheat Indian "chapati" flat breads. They look like a tortilla.

I think any hydrogenated oils and added sugar (high fructose corn syrup are to be avoided too. The only brand I've been able to find made with whole wheat flour is Dempster's. They have no added sugar but only 2g fiber which isn't much. Anyone else live in Ontario and know where to find better ones?

I Know, I was so mad when I got home and realized it had the partially hydrogenated stuff in it!
I CANT WIN ON THIS DIET!
These things frustrate me so much! what does everyone do about these? Nothing in the regular supermarket is legal!

are we allowed vegetable oil when baking stuff? i made the bran muffis but did not have canola oil, so i used vegetable oil.

Happy Mom,

I'll have to check at home. The ones I picked up were, I believe, the store brand but they may have been Dempsters. If I discover what I have is more than 2g of fiber, I'll let you know. I really wish we had the variety that our neighbours to the south seem to enjoy when it comes to the bread and cereals on this diet.

I did find a high fiber cereal at Costco that I do enjoy. It has 7g of fiber in a 3/4 cup serving. I add a few raspberries and 1% milk.

Sorry Happy Mom. The ones I have at home are Dempsters as well. The bag says 95 cal, 2g fat (0.2 sat), 15g carb, of which only 1.7g is fibre.

I was at the grocery store yesterday and also checked out the President's Choice wraps, but the first ingredient was "enriched wheat flour", so I didn't bother looking any further.

If I find something better, I'll let you know. I don't think the Dempster's are that bad for an occasional sandwhich though, combined with some good carbs and good fat.
