Oatmeal Question

Postby GLaMouR GiRL LV » Sun Jun 19, 2005 9:24 pm

I start phase 2 tomorrow. Just wondering why we can't have instant oatmeal?

Usually there is sugar in instant oatmeal and they process it to the point it that it affects your blood sugar quickly. Regular oatmeal can be microwaved it you want it faster but stay away from instant it will screw with your diet.

Thanks! The whole reason I used to eat instant was because of time issues in the morning. But if I can make regular oatmeal in the microwave than that's great too! Thanks!

Forgot to ask...are there any instant oatmeals that are OK though? Or do all have the "bad" sugar that affects blood sugar quickly?

I highly recommend Bob's Red Mill Thick Rolled Oats. We haven't cooked them in the microwave yet, but there is information on the package about cooking them that way. We seem to get them done on the stove just fine in about 10-15 minutes, which really isn't that much time to DH and me any more. We somehow gained patience for cooking once we stopped eating so many convenience foods!

The reason that instant oatmeal is not allowed is that the extra processing to make it cook faster also gives it a higher GI. Your body digests it faster, so you are hungrier sooner. So, even plain instant oatmeal is not SBD-friendly. Neither is the quick cook type. Stick with regular old-fashioned oats or better yet, steel-cut oats.

That is so true about instant oatmeal not staying with you very long. I hardly ever ate instant before SB, for that very reason. I would be hungry 1 hr later! Now with the "real" oatmeal, I have been very pleasantly surprised at how long I feel satisfied! Plus, the oatmeal that you cook has a different texture and is very enjoyable and satifying. Good luck!

I have a question too!

Can I just buy like, Quaker Oats and make them, and add some apples and cinnamon, and maybe a little splenda? (I'm on phase 2) ... just wondering! I can skip the splenda too!

Oatmeal

Postby CdnGuy » Mon Jun 20, 2005 3:48 am

Thanks for this info ... I have always been a big fan of Quaker Quick Oats, and wondered if they qualified for Phase 2. I've never liked instant oatmeal because it's sooooo full of sugar and fake flavouring. Now I understand that even quick oats have been processed to the point of raising their GI too high. Since I started SB three weeks ago, my blood sugar has been NORMAL every day!! This is so amazing ... I guess now I'll just have to use oatmeal with a higher lumber content.

It's amazing that I don't feel hungry so much any more. The first week of Phase 1 I thought I was going to die. Now I miss the feel and taste of sugary food, but I'm not hungry for it.

I agree...I do miss the taste and being able to eat certain snack foods. My boyfriend was over and had chips, cookies, strawberries, and a whole bunch of other things in the house. Kinda wished I could have munched with him. But now, I have the self-control to say NO and didn't have that before SB. I love this WOE!

Yes!! Oatmeal by itself just isn't very appetizing. We have had some long threads here on how we all flavor the plain oatmeal. Cinnamon and splenda with some fruit (berries or bananas usually) are our particular mainstays. Some like dried apricots. Some like SF pancake syrup to give it that maple flavoring. Lots of different options really. Plain without any flavoring at all is pretty yucky though in my opinion.

GLaMouR GiRL LV - Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but there is an easy way around having to cook oatmeal every morning. I cook a batch of steel cut oats on Sunday night, let it cool, and then put individual servings in plastic containers. This makes it easy to heat and eat during the week. Sometimes the oats can become thick after cooling, so I add a bit of milk after their heated and stir...voila, almost instant oatmeal! :D

Yummy things to add to oats: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, fruit, nuts, flax meal, vanilla or other flavored extracts, sf maple syrup or other sf daVinci / Torani syrups – Multiple flavor combinations help break up the monotony of boring pasty oatmeal! LOL!

McCann's Steel Cut is my pre-ride breakfast for long distance cycling. unfortunately, most of those rides require that i finish breakfast by 5:30 or so. you can speed up the cook time on McCann's by pre-soaking the oats overnight in skim milk. that helps. lately, i've been making it the night before, adding a few T. of skim milk in the morning, and then nuking it. it tastes exactly the same and the consistency is fine. that's 5 min. of prep time in the morning.
