1/5/05 - 172 (just a little fluctuation, nothing to get upset about)

Did the 1-mile walk again this morning! I CAN get up early and work out!!!

Wearing some more of MIL's pants. They look so good! :)

Today's menu:

B: Veggie/cottage cheese/egg quiche
S: Orange
L: Leftovers - barbecue chicken, pinto beans, whole wheat garlic toast
S: On the drive back from Houston last night - a pkg. of snack crackers and a pkg. of peanuts with a diet coke
D: WW beef fajita, Mas Amigos pinto beans
D: Fudgesicle and Cool Whip

Bad day. Dad is in the hospital. He's pretty sick. Took the afternoon off and went to Houston to see him. Then, I had to drive to his house and pick up his dog and bring her back to my house. I'm going to take care of her while he is in the hospital. I love her.

Good for you for waking up early and working out! That's something I don't think I could do! It was a hard enough adjustment for me to wake up and eat breakfast when I started this diet...

I'm glad your MIL's pants work for you - I would rather die than wear my MIL's pants - lol!

Hi Ani! I love my MIL's old clothes. She is a very stylish woman and the clothes are in fantastic shape. They are better quality than the stuff I buy!

1/6/05 - still 172

Today I worked out again. My calves and thighs are feeling it! Just that little ol' 18-minute 1-mile walk is working for me.

Today's menu:

B: Veggie/egg/cottage cheese quiche
S: Orange
L: Leftovers - prob. pork roast, rice pilaf, and veggie
S: Veggie sticks w/lite sour cream ranch dip, Triscuits
D: ??? I guess it's time to cook something new! Today is cold and rainy; some warm comfort food is in order
D: The last piece of spiced pumpkin cheesecake

My dad is in the hospital. I went to see him yesterday but I don't think I'll be going today. It's an hour away and my sister is much closer; she'll probably go today and just call me and let me know what's going on. Not a happy day.

Thanks for the note, Melissa. I spoke to my sister a little while ago and our dad is getting better. Yay! He started feeling bad around New Year's but his regular dr. was out of town. Instead of going to another dr, he waited for her to come back. By then he was so sick that he had to go into the hospital. We're going to have a stern talk with him when he gets home; no more of that! :x

1/7/05 - still 172

Missed my workout this morning. Carly was barking at 5:00 so I got up to go into the living room with her. I (eventually) fell asleep on the couch and finally woke up at 7:00. I will work out when I get home from work today.

Today's menu:

B: Veggie/egg/cottage cheese quiche
S: Apple
L: We will probably go out for lunch; the cleaning lady is at our house today
S: Hmmm . . . Triscuits & veggie sticks w/lite sour cream ranch dip
D: Friday is our usual steak night; we'll probably have steaks, mushrooms, and asparagus or broccoli - maybe some new potatoes w/onions
D: ??? Either PB balls or a fudgesicle w/skim milk. The Weight Watchers Smart Ones fudgesicles are so good! They're huge but still under (or around) the 75-cal. limit

Dad is doing a little better. He's responding to the medicine and he's waking up a little bit. He's still on a ventilator but they're weaning him off. We are going to see him tomorrow. My sister and her husband were there all day yesterday and will probably be there most of the day today. After we get done at the hospital we might go to a monster truck show with my SIL and her son. That would be fun!

1/10/05 - 173

Rough weekend. Was at the hospital Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. There is good news today, though -- one of the drs said that Dad had taken a turn for the better! We think he's going to be OK. We just have to be patient and let the medicine work. If you are reading this, please say a prayer for our family. Prayer has been working so far!

Gained a lb. over the weekend due to eating out at restaurants a lot and not drinking enough water. Not bad considering the big picture. I just hope I can get back into some sort of routine this week. I don't know what the week will hold. I'm sure I will be back in Houston but don't know exactly when and for how long.

I was able to do my 1-mi. workout this morning. I haven't been able to keep up with the Leslie Sansone book that well. I will just do the best I can and take it day by day.

One nice thing, I was able to find some things for the diet while I was in Houston. Had a nice shopping trip to Whole Foods when visiting hours were over Friday night. I got some whole grain stuff to use in my bread machine. I even managed to get to TJ Maxx Saturday morning and found 3 new bottles of DaVinci SF syrup: white chocolate, hazelnut, and cinnamon. Looking forward to trying them out!

Today's menu:

B: 2 apple oat muffins, 1 cup skim milk
S: Skip
L: Leftover barbecue chicken, pinto beans, mashed cauliflower
S: Skip
D: Grilled salmon, brown rice & veggie pilaf, steamed broccoli
D: Prob. PB balls & milk

I'll try to take my big dog for a walk around the neighborhood tonight, too. I've not been paying as much attention to him since my dad's little dog came to stay with us. He'll definitely cheer me up!

Hi Melissa! Thanks for sending me a note. You are so sweet. Do you have a journal on here? If so, send me a link so I can write in yours sometime.

Great news, the greatest possible -- my dad is getting better! All the drs. are saying he has made a turnaround and he is going to be OK! I'm going to the hospital tomorrow afternoon and will be there for the next couple of days. Wow, what a relief. I was sure scared!

1/13/05 - 173 (first day of TOM, I'm usually up 2-3 lb.)

Spent all day at the hospital yesterday. Dad is doing better but he's still going to be in the ICU for quite a while. His kidneys aren't up to snuff so they've put him on dialysis. But the dr. said he is as strong as a horse! So that's good! He is under heavy sedation because he's still hooked up to a ventilator, and now the dialysis machine, and they don't want him to get agitated and disturb all the wires. At least he looks like he is sleeping peacefully. He will get better but it is in God's time, not ours.

I took a long walk through the hospital yesterday, across all the skywalks to the other towers. I fit right in with all the other people walking fast through the hospital. It felt good and I discovered all sorts of new cafes and shops I didn't know about. I had a salad for lunch. It was one of those salad bars where you fill up your container and they weigh it, and you pay by the ounce. A big salad with some baked chicken and a bottle of water: $11.81! Yikes! I ate every bite of it!

When I came home last night, my husband had dinner ready. He fixed stir-fried beef and veggies, with rice and green beans. That was so sweet of him.

Today's menu:

B: Yogurt flavored w/DaVinci SF raspberry syrup, mixed with some thawed frozen strawberries; sprinkled with Kashi Good Friends cereal
S: Skip
L: Lunch at DH's office - green salad, stuffed chicken (I took off the bacon!), veggies in some kind of sauce, a sliver of angel food cake with some fresh berries & whipped cream
S: Will have to skip to make up for that lunch!
D: Pork tenderloin, steamed zucchini, pinto beans
D: Prob. a fudgesicle & a glass of skim milk

I got up and did my 1-mi. walking tape this morning. I can feel it in my calves. I need to take some measurements but I'll probably wait until after my period. I'm not seeing the scale go down, but considering everything that's going on, I'm OK with that. I will just have to be patient, on all accounts.

1/14/05 - 174 (TOM)

Did my 1-mi. tape this a.m. Funny, my cramps are not as bad this month. Maybe it's the exercise? It's the only thing I've changed.

Today's menu:

B: Kashi Good Friends, skim milk
S: Orange
L: McDonald's salad (taking lunch to my son at school)
S: Nuts & a diet coke on the way to Houston
D: Something good . . . sis and I may go to Ruggles
D: Will prob. skip, unless she has some SF fudge bars at her house

Going back to the hospital tonight to see my dad and spending tomorrow there too. He's such a fighter. Holding strong but not going anywhere fast. Maybe on the way home I'll stop at Central Market. Been curious to go there!

Monday is a holiday. DH wants to go fishing (even if it's windy and cold, that prob. won't stop him). Not sure if I'll go to Houston or stay home and bake bread. If our son doesn't go with his dad, I'll be at home with him. That sounds like a good day.

1/18/05 - 172

TOM is pretty much over, and so is the monthly bloat. I feel better today. Did my 1-mi. walk DVD this morning, even though I was sleepy.

Had a nice long weekend. Went to Houston Friday night, had a fight with my sister ( ) and came back home without spending the night. We are under so much stress right now. We found out our mom's sick, too. I'm not going to go into details, but she will most likely need surgery and treatments afterward. She lives in another state, which makes it even more difficult. I want her to come live here, but she refuses. Maybe she'll change her mind now.

Saturday was good, I did all my chores like laundry and grocery shopping. Watched Dodgeball with my DS and two of his friends. That movie is so funny! Went to see Dad Sunday and made up with my sister. He's not doing as well as we wished he would by now. Still in ICU and not getting better fast. At least my sis and I are speaking again.

Monday was another homebody day. I made some granola, that was fun. I also made some parmesan vinaigrette salad dressing and some parmesan pepper bread in my bread machine. I used regular bread flour, not whole wheat. I know, not very beachy, but oh well. My DS liked it, especially when I made garlic toast with it. I went through all my MIL's old clothes, tried them on, and washed what I wanted to keep. Now I need to clean out my closet to make room for them. Took a nice walk outside with my dog. Man, he's getting BIG and STRONG!

Today's menu:

B: Veggie/egg/cottage cheese quiche
S: Orange
L: Big green salad w/homemade dressing, a little leftover spaghetti
S: Skip
D: Chicken fajitas, WW tortillas, grilled onions & peppers, Mexican rice, pinto beans, green salad w/avocado
D: If I feel energetic, I might make applesauce brownies; if not, I might have some FF/NSA strawberry frozen yogurt w/a little DaVinci white choc. syrup

Don't know what the week will hold in terms of my parents' health. But then again, do we ever really know what each week will hold? I'm going to take life day by day for a while. Just going to do the best I can with eating and exercising. Gotta take care of myself, ya know!
