hi!

in addition to what everyone else said, I find that Kashi GoLean is the cheapest at TJ's than my other grocery stores. Also, I buy Oatmeal there, but I noticed that Walmart is cheaper the other day :)

check out their baked goods area - they have many breads that are good whole wheat, simple ingredient loaves.

I can usually find a package of Tilapia fillets for a good price, depending on when I go.

from the fearless flyer:

very thin, narrow slices of sourdough bread are topped with generous amounts of flavorful parmesan cheese and baked to make these unusual, intensely flavored snacks. they're related to the breadstick, but with a higher pedigree. the sourdough bread becomes very crunchy when baked, topped with tiny "beads" of flavorful cheese.

this flavor is so distinctive, they'll be a welcome addition to your buffet tables for holiday entertaining, or an accompaniment for cocktails any time of year. they're a great snack when you're looking for a big crunch. you can also serve them with salads or soups and expect raves.

although i doubt the parmesan is reduced fat, i eat them. since sourdough bread is OK for p2 these bad boys are legal!

i'm just beginning to realize that trader joe's is often actually cheaper than the large chain grocery stores.

anyways, just a tip: the last time i was there, i was curious about some cashew-macademia butter. the girl working there said that if i didn't like it, i could bring it back and get my money back. she said that this was true for anything there, so they take back even opened stuff if you don't like it!

also, the cashew-macademia nut butter is a must. it's great on toasted whole-wheat walnut bread.

yum i love that place.

Returns at Trader Joe's

Postby Ydnewinc » Wed Dec 01, 2004 5:16 pm

Thanks for the tip periwcarebear!

I recently bought pure stevia at TJ's. I was sooooo excited to try it. Sadly, it was THE nastiest sweetener I have ever tasted. Which is strange, because I have liked other brands of stevia...maybe it was because this bottle was pure stevia. Anyway it was $10 for a teeny tiny jar. Glad to hear I can exchange it for other staples I buy at TJ's.

I tried their stevia, too, and found it quite bitter. Even if I put just a little in, and the food wasn't sweet, I could taste the bitterness...think I will bring mine back, too.

Burdle - I agree! The bitterness stole all the sweetness for me. Although, I'm willing to give stevia another try. I picked up some free samples of stevia at Whole Foods the other day and they tasted great. I forgot the brand, but they were in individual green pillow packets. I'll do another taste test and see if it does the trick. :D

Somehow, I think the fact that it is pure stevia makes it bitter. Gosh, I wonder what’s added to bite the bitterness in other brands.

:D :D TRADER JOES still ROCKS!!! :D :D

Another 'recipe' that my dh thinks I'm the bomb for making:
I buy the masala simmer sauce, too. I follow the directions on the jar, chopping chicken into 1 in. cubes and sauteeing it in the sauce and 8 oz of water. When it's done, I pour it all over prepared Whole Weat Cous Cous (which takes 5 minutes). All in all, it's a 15 minute meal start to finish. Plus, the cous cous fills you up fast! I love easy meals that make me look good in the kitchen.

Today's trip to Trader Joe's (how I WISH they were closer to my house):

fresh frozen tilapia fillets
fresh frozen salmon fillets
shrimp
chicken
apples
spinach
lowfat cheese
lowfat cottage cheese
green beans
peas
blueberries
strawberries
almond butter
parmesan cheese
yoghurt
eggs
whole wheat pita bread
whole wheat pasta
pesto sauce
olive oil
Kashi Good Friends cereal
"3-buck-Chuck" (Charles Shaw cabernet)
turkey bacon
dried apricots

I love this store, because it combines plenty of healthy choices with very reasonable prices. My list would have probably cost me anywhere from $75-100 at Whole Foods (even with coupons); at Joe's, my bill was about $60. Their store-label brands are also absolutely excellent--you don't have to buy name-brand to get good quality. And the customer service at my location is very good; the staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Hey all- haven't been on in a while but wanted to say THANKS AGAIN for the wonderful TJ list. Can't wait to get out there again. Had small trip a few weeks ago but then colds, flu, IBS, pinkeye and generally "feeling of yuckiness" has hit our family. It has been a rough few weeks but we are on the upswing now! (fingers crossed) I will be sure to let you know of any finds I come up with as well.

Trader Joe's

Postby olsonfamily1 » Thu Dec 16, 2004 8:17 pm

I just love Trader Joe's. My favorite thing to get there is the whole wheat pizza dough. The closest TJ's to me is an hour and a half away. When I go, I like to stock up so I don't have to go back for another month. I usually get lots of the dough, but it has an expiration date. I freeze the extra dough. On the morning that I want pizza (for dinner), I stick it back in the fridge. That evening I take it out of the fridge and set it on the counter for 20 minutes like the directions state. After that I put it on a pizza stone and stretch it out and cook it for 8 minutes. Then I add toppings (TJ's sun-dried tomato bruschetta, etc) and cook for another 8 minutes. It turns out TERRIFIC!!! It is even better than the dough I make from scratch in my bread machine. And you wanna know the best part? It only cost 79 cents!!!!!

Here are some other things I like to buy there:

Soy and Flaxseed Tortilla Chips
Fat Free Chile con Queso
Fat Free Black Bean Dip
Whole Grain Breads
Whole Grain Cereals
Whole Wheat Pizza Dough
Whole Wheat Pasta
Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas

Frozen Pepper Strips
Frozen Sweet Potato French Fries
Frozen Veggies
Frozen Berries
Turkey Bacon
Chicken Sausage
Turkey Sausage
Monterey Jack or Cheddar Cheese Sticks
Laughing Cow Light Cheese
Sun-Dried Tomato Bruschetta Sauce
Hansen's Diet Soda
Arizona Diet Green Tea w/Ginseng
Green Chai Tea Bags
Organic Decaf Coffee

Simmer Sauces
