Honey = Sweet Treat?

Postby Mojo Jojo » Sun Apr 22, 2012 6:58 pm

I was wondering if honey would be allowed within the sweet treat guidelines? 1 tablespoon is 60 calories and within the calorie guidelines of a sweet treat. It wouldn't be alone. I was thinking a little with some peanut butter in my ricotta cream. Just can't find imitation honey flavor.

Not really, the sweet treat guidelines are for calories from sugar-free or no-sugar-added treats. Honey does have a lower GI value than table sugar, but is higher in calories and it's on the "foods to avoid" list for P2. (but mum's the word if you've just gotta have it :wink: )

As part of p2, you can have occasional off-plan treats. It's up to you to decide which off-plan options you want to have, and how often you can have them and still reach your goals.

I bought some today, had a tbs in some yogurt. Now I feel like I want more. Its going in the trash. I've never tried agave nectar, perhaps I'll try some of the dark stuff. Its supposed to have peculiar taste.

I bought agave nectar as a substitute for honey and it's working great. There is a light version and an amber version. I find the amber version is more similar to honey. Also, it is so sweet, that you can use a lot less and still sweeten things. I use it in my yogurt, my herbal tea, my oatmeal, all kinds of things. With its sweetness, I wind up using less than a teaspoon a day, even when I use it multiple times. You might want to give it a try since it sounds like you love honey. It hasn't caused any cravings at all.

Agreed, my go-to for greek yogurt and plain oatmeal is agave nectar. You only need a little. The world doesn't end if you run out and use honey, as long as it is ALSO just a little. But you did exactly the right thing -- if it is too tempting, throw it out like a bad teenage vampire movie.

Fwiw, you might want to give away the jar/container to a friend, neighbor, or co-worker.
