If you don't need to lose much, they say you can skip p1 and just do p2. But if you find that you're having trouble sticking to it, that may be because of cravings. P1 is very helpful for getting rid of those. (I don't know if people really realize that they have trouble with physical cravings for bad carbs, until they've gone through p1 and seen what it's like to not have them.)
The biggest thing probably is to understand that this isn't a quick fix, but a lifestyle change. Ultimately, learning to live in the p2 style of eating as your new normal is what will keep the weight off.
