South Beach Snack bars

Postby shellyrbil » Mon Mar 05, 2012 10:44 pm

How many snack bars do others allow themselves to eat daily? I use these for dessert when I am tired of the sugar free jello. The whipped chocolate almond are so good. I know they have 6 grams of protein, but they also have 6 grams of sugar. There are no artificial ingredients though. Thoughts?

This topic has come up before and the consensus is that they aren't good for you and seem contrary to the Beach - (Magna or Kimborini will be able to tell you why) but I love them! I used to really love the Chocolate soy nut packs but I'm not sure they make them any more. One packet used to be my dessert every night. I also loved the dark chocolate raspberry ones! Ooooo I wonder if they still make them? I need to go check out Amazon and see if they still sell them.....

They're not terrible, but also not ideal. I think they're OK when you can't get anything else, but I wouldn't suggest including them regularly or routinely. Fwiw, at one time I kept protein bars on hand for snacking, and my weight went up instead of down. It's pretty easy to overdo the bars, and usually the ingredients are not the best. Better than junk food, but not as good as the regular foods we all need to eat every day.

Magna, You're advice is right on target - once in awhile but not on a regular basis. I tried protein bars as well. I figured they were better than dessert. I stopped eating protein bars and south beach bars for 3 days and haven't gained any weight even though I feel I am eating more. I used to skip "wholesome" foods so I can eat the chocolate found in these bars. Even though I am probably eating more "real" food, I am not gaining without the bars.

Btw, I saw these in the store recently and they are incredibly expensive - over $6 a box.

There are some pretty good muffin and cookie recipes on this site. You could always bake some of those and keep them in plastic bags or containers in the freezer to use when needed. You could also try ww crackers and nuts or seeds.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread, because I have an extremely full schedule at the moment, and I really struggled with food this week. In general I am not a fan of packaged foods, but I am having trouble making it through my 4 hour morning class on my breakfast. By the time I get to work, and I usually have to hit the ground running and start seeing patients right away, I am starting to get that crazy, "order a pizza" message running through my mind. I am thinking of just using these for that particular moment. I saw some other good ideas for classroom break snacks on Kayln's kitchen, but honestly, I can't swear that this routine will allow me enough time to even put veggies in a baggie every day, which is no way to live, I know. It's only temporary, of course, but this is where I have landed at the moment. I'm going to try harder to prep and pack on the weekend, but I think I am going to get some of these for those mornings that just don't work out.

I think there are better brands with better ingredients out there. Kashi TLC Trail Mix bars are good-- real ingredients. Costco has box of 30 for 11 something, I think.
My FAQ-- food lists, portion guidelines, etc.
