amitriptyline

Postby reev » Thu Feb 23, 2012 3:38 pm

Hello,
I have recently started taking amitriptyline to combat chronic pain due to nerve damage post surgery.
My question is, is anyone else taking this and noticed a stall in their weight loss? I haven't gained any weight, but have been working my butt off and sticking to the plan and my weight hasn't budged.

Moderator's note: moved from phase 2 discussion.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with that, but it does look like there is a correlation with weight gain when on meds like that. So if you weren't trying to lose weight, maybe you'd be gaining instead of holding steady.

Maybe talk to your doctor to see if there are other options or if he/she has any suggestions.

I'm sorry to hear about your health problems.

When we were discussing medications I told him that I veto any that cause any weight gain. The others for the condition I have were known to cause extreme weight gain.
He told me he has never had any patient gain weight on this drug, however, I am usually the exception the rule.
The good news is that I'm virtually pain free now and am able to work out more. But I have been on the drugs for a couple of weeks, haven't cheated and am working out more and haven't lost an ounce.
Coincidence. . .I think not.

I've done some reading on it re: weight gain. Most people say that they have increased appetite and cravings for sweets. Which would contribute to weight gain. I have neither of these symptoms.
Thankfully, I was a couple of weeks into Phase 2 when I started. I have no cravings return, I have not strayed from the plan at all. I have never been more committed. But again I haven't lost an ounce since starting the medication. It's getting really frustrating.

Then maybe you just need to give it more time-- you're still relatively new to p2, and it can take a bit for the water weight to even out so you can start seeing the fat loss show up on the scale. And if you're doing strength training or getting sore muscles from the workouts, that can increase your water weight as well as your muscles heal. It could all be a coincidence with starting the new meds.

I just look at people who have lost 20+ pounds in the same amount of time that I have been here, I have 50 more pounds to lose and can't afford a stall already

I know that can be frustrating. Try not to compare yourself to others, as everyone is a little bit different.

If you want, you could post a menu over in the p2 area and see if anyone has any suggestions. Make sure to include detail-- for instance, instead of "milk," something like "1 cup 1% milk" gives us more to go by.
