I had PIZZA!

Postby momtogrif » Tue Aug 30, 2011 1:46 am

So, today was day 2 of Phase 2 and I decided that the one thing I really wanted was pizza. So, I went to the grocery store and bought a Kashi mushroom spinach pizza and I ate half for dinner. It was worth it! I didn't have any other carbs today except for 8 raspberries with breakfast so I felt good about the pizza. I know that Kashi isn't ideal and that they probably have some additives but it was a better choice than the Safeway white bread crusted pizza with pepperoni that my family was eating, LOL! I've been cooking all week and making healthy food for dinner but I have a cold today and I just didn't want to cook and pizza just sounded great! No guilt here!

well this isn't an alternative when you don't want to cook, but i use a WW tortilla to make pizza. i get this high-fiber kind that is pretty large, use Mom's spaghetti sauce (just tomatoes, basil and garlic) and put on all the toppings i have from mushrooms and onions and artichokes to ham and turkey pepperoni. it is kinda hard to pick it up :) but it does still taste like pizza!
the answer is: you need more veggies.

Another choice is whole-grain English muffins, for individual pizzas. You can also make a more traditional pizza with a whole-wheat Boboli crust. Just add spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce, and part-skim or lowfat mozzarella cheese, plus whatever appropriate toppings you like.

I really love making gourmet pizzas using a whole wheat pita bread! It's a bit thicker than a tortilla and in my opinion more filling. And the possibilities are endless! Last week I made a shaved asparagus, red onion and ricotta pizza with lots of herbs and it was delicious. (I'm in phase two)

a pizza with fish can also be very healthy. Only the cheese is not that good.
Occasionally you can be naughty. If it is not too often

There's no concern about being naughty. Eating some healthy pizza (with a whole-grain crust and healthy toppings) is fine, and you can do it regularly as part of SBD. You could have some healthy pizza every day if you wanted to.

Naughty is in this situation indeed not the best word choice,
But almost all pizza `s in restaurants do not comply with your criteria.
The best is to make them by yourself.

Yes, it's usually better to make them yourself. There are several ideas posted above for how to do that easily.

I'm in my 3rd week of P2 and I have to admit that I am really missing a good pepperoni pizza. I can't seem to find pepperoni on any lists-good or bad for SBD and was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's ok to eat.

Regular pepperoni contains an awful lot of animal (saturated) fat.

However, Hormel does make a turkey pepperoni that, according to Hormel, "...has 70 percent less fat than Hormel® original pepperoni, Hormel® turkey pepperoni still has the same spicy flavor both kids and adults love."

Again, according to their information, their regular pepperoni contains 13 grams of fat (6 grams saturated) per 28 gram serving. So it's almost half fat. The turkey pepperoni, however, has 4 grams of fat (1.5 grams saturated) per 30 gram serving.

Ive been thinking about making a "pizza" type with the pita bread also. We just bought some the other day of the round whole wheat kind and I thought it might be great toasted in the oven and then use the sauce and for meat I was thinking either cut up the canadian bacon as a substitute for the ham you sometimes get on pizza. Or could always use chicken, maybe those pre cooked strips that go well with salads. Could also cook up some ground turkey or chicken and sprinkle on or even use crumbled turkey bacon as some "good meat topping alternatives". I thought of also using thin sliced zucchini or squash rounds. I love the spinach pizzas that you can have in resturaunts so you could really probably have tons of veggie topping possibilities too with a light sprinkling of reduced fat cheese.

Havent tried it yet, but am looking forward to. I think Im gonna try the pitta bread rounds. Seems like a perfect personal size sbd safe crust. :O)

Or you could make a "traditional" pizza Margherita with tomato, mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil.

Use one of our SB-friendly options for the crust, and then use some low-fat mozzarella instead of the fresh kind. (Never mind that I don't think there are too many local supermarkets that carry the actual buffalo mozzarella.)

I do understand the desire for a good pepperoni pizza sometimes, but I'm equally fond of pizza Margherita. Especially in the summer when I have fresh basil and tomatoes growing in my garden. Don't chop up the basil at all. Just lay slices of tomato, whole (big) basil leaves, and cheese on the crust and bake.

You can also buy ww pizza dough, or pre-baked ww pizza crusts and top them as you see fit. (But of course a ww pita or another flat piece of some kind of ww bread works fine.) Be sure to check the label - not every brown-colored "wheat" dough or crust is really whole-wheat.

If you bake a pizza larger than one serving, my suggestion is to cut it up as soon as it's cool, and refrigerate or freeze the pieces you're not going to eat immediately. A Ziploc-type sandwich bag works well for smaller pieces, or a quart-sized bag for larger ones.

Actually, Costco has the Buffalo mozzarella. I'm staying away from it! I could gobble that stuff up constantly. No restraint!

The thing to be careful when making/choosing a crust is that you get the right portion on it. That's why I like individual pizzas best!

YUM! I love a good pizza! Haven't gotten that far for myself yet (a low control item for me), I am jealous! I will definitely be making a REAL pizza for myself when I get to my goal weight. I did put some of the Hormel turkey pepperoni on the Pizza Meat Pie recipe from the SB cookbook. If you look at a package of the Hormel turkey pepperoni, the serving size is 15 slices, which is a little ridiculous for an individual pizza. You could get away with using a lot less. Sorry I don't have the data in front of me, I just remember thinking I was only using 8-10 slices for a dish that serves 5-6 people, so the additional fat was negligible.
