1 Week into Phase 1 - Anything else to drink?

Hi,

I started the diet last sunday (8th Jan). I really miss all the candies, cheesecake and other evil stuff I used to eat. The main thing that is getting to me though is drinking, I like fruit juice, vitamin water. Is anything like that allowed? Even in Phase 2??

You can have fruity flavored diet drinks like Crystal Light and the like, but you have to watch out for anything with added sugars (or added fruit juice, which might as well be added sugar). When you eat a piece of fruit (p2 of course), you're getting the amount of sugar in just 1 piece of fruit, and it comes along with the proportionate amount of fiber to slow absorption. Your system has to work a certain amount just to get to the sugar. When you drink fruit juice, you're getting a lot more than 1 piece of fruit's worth of sugar (maybe 3-5 servings?), and to top it off there's no fiber. So the sugar goes straight into your system.

So look at the ingredient list to see if they add sugar and/or fruit juice. If they do, it's not a good choice for any phase, really (although something with such a small amount of fruit juice that it is really close to calorie/sugar free would probably be okay in p2).

We drink alot of tea at my house, and I love fruit juice as well. Also trying to kick more of my pop intake.

Whats been working well for us is that we've been buying the sugar free mixes that you just drop in a bottle of water , shake it up and go. There are TONS of flavors and brands of that stuff now. We dont mind regular water, but sometimes when you just want something with a little flavor or kick in your drink its a great go to drink mix. We've been trying the sugar free tea mixes, lemonades etc... there are tons of flavors these days. And, to us, they taste just as good if not even better than the sugar based mixes. You almost feel like your cheating by drinking them. The lemonades and such does also seem to help with that acidic citrusy jolt that I like from fruit juice. Also seems to help with my need for something sweet tasting. And they come in lots of fruity flavors.

We actually started our P1 around the same time as you, We started Jan 7th. Just a day before. You'll have to keep in touch on your progress being we're pratically at the same place.

Also on those drinks, we do the drop in mixes for bottled water on the go. But, Im going to start buying the larger gallon sized jugs of the spring water and make up our own drink mixes to keep in the fride. Its cheaper I think than buying the pops, juices etc. You can buy a jug of water for a dollar or so. ( or get it right out of the tap, we dont care for our tap water)And get the Sugar Free mixes in the larger packets to mix by the quart. Just do a little conversion maybe and you can make up drinks for the house by the jugs.

Good ideas.

I also like to make Earl Gray tea, chill it, and then add a bit of Splenda if I feel like it at the time.

Earl Gray has oil of bergamot in it, which is a citrus.

I usually put a couple of cups of water in a 2-quart plastic pitcher, put that in the microwave to heat it to boiling, then put in several tea-bags. This makes sort of a tea-concentrate, and then I can add ice to the pitcher to cool it down right away. Most of the ice melts pretty quickly, then I add cold water until I have a full 2-quart pitcher of iced tea.


In the summer, I make a gallon jar of sun-tea and then add one packet of Crystal Light lemonade to it when it's done. Gives me "sweetened iced tea with lemon" without all the fuss of squeezing lemons, and no actual sugar.

I could drink Crystal Light raspberry iced tea until I floated away.

All of the grocery stores around here have their own house-brand of Crystal Light, which are usually a bit cheaper than the brand-name, and I can't tell the difference.

Hi there,
I have just started Phase 1 today. I wanted to find out about drinking Flavored Water in Phase 1 or any phase for that matter. The ingredients are: carbonated water, fructose, citric acid, sodium, cyclamate/sodium saccharin/acesulfame K (non-nutritive sweeteners), sodium benzoate and flavour. Is this ok to drink?

Well, Im sorta new here too. Just starting my second week of P1. So, some one else might know more to tell you as Im still lerning and am new.

But, based one what little bits I know and have learned, my thoughts would be that it probably wouldnt be the best choice. The "fructose" you mentioned was my impression types of sugars. I think in label reading we're supposed to stay away from all the "tose" words. lol for lack of a better way to put it. But I think things like fructose and glucose and other such words, (somebody help me out here) :O) They are they words to look for for the sugars. Also all the "syrups" you might read in a label are indecators of things to stay away from.

But someone else might be able to clarify better for you but. But, my guess would be that its not the best choice and you probably should look for things that are spacifically stated "sugar free".

Charm's right. "Fructose" is just another word for sugar.

So is basically any word ending in "ose." (Edit: Except for like "sucralose" which is normally sold under the name of "Splenda" which is an artificial sweetener and allowed on Phase 1 of SB.)

Plus, the closer to the front of the ingredients list, the more of that item is in whatever it is. So if your ingredients listing says, "carbonated water, fructose, ..." that means it's basically sugar water with a few (very few) flavorings mixed in.

If you really miss the carbonation, you can buy straight "soda water" (it should contain nothing but carbonated water) at the store, then add in a bit of Crystal Light type stuff to flavor it. Mix gently so as not to lose all the fizz out of it.

Fructose is on the approved sweeteners list, but you would need to count it towards your "sweet treats" limit. You don't have to have fructose - it's just an option if you want it.

I found the Walmart brand (Great Value) lemonade equivalent of Crystal Light to be
delicious. Also like the Crystal Light Green Tea with Raspberry.
