Dining out: Fajitas

Postby celeryicing » Thu May 19, 2011 3:16 pm

Fajitas have always been one of my favorite items to order, and (I thought) one of the healthiest (darn white flower tortillas!!!) Anyway, looking at them on the menu while dining out the other night, I began to think of ways of adjusting them to be SB friendly. It seems that the two main enemies here are the tortillas and the rice. The rice is easy, I have no problem skipping it and getting more tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, black beans, etc. However the tortillas are a bit more of a challenge. Short of just skipping them and eating everything with a fork, I was wondering if it might be viable to bring my own whole wheat tortillas and just use those. Of course, it would have to be a bit of a subterfuge 8) , but I could deal with that once in awhile. After all, the way I figure it, one of the main concepts of SB is just making adjustments.

The serving size would be one small WW tortilla. If you think it's worth it, sure, go for it. If you're well along in phase 2 (or in phase 3), you could try a small corn tortilla occasionally.

Then I guess as per the old WOE 3 or 4 is out of the question! I think if I want them that bad that I will just dump the tortillas and eat the stuff with a fork. After all, chicken, steak, or shrimp with peppers and onions, black beans, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce sounds like a good meal to me!

They likely cook them in something bad, like lard. So it's still not a fully compliant or healthy meal.

Do you mean the tortillas, or the fajitas?

Any of the fajita ingredients that were mentioned that are cooked have that potential.

I think a traditional Mexican restaurant is more likely to use lard. An Americanized restaurant is more likely to use some kind of oil (though possibly more than you should have.)

Fajitas are one of my go-to meals when we go out. Yes, they have WAY too much sodium and probably don't use the best oil, but definitely not the worst you could do. We go out about once a month, so it's not a frequent occurrence and I don't mind taking a break from strict SB plan occasionally. I always skip the tortilla, as well as ask for only salsa and guacamole as my condiments (no cheese, sour cream, etc.) If they come with rice I ask for steamed veggies instead. I also frequently share an order with my husband and just have side salads to go with it (portion sizes are out of control!)
