calories are simply a measure of energy. (more specifically it is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree celsius at 1 atmosphere of pressure) nutritional science tells us that you need to create a net caloric deficit (between calories taken in and calories expended or energy in vs. energy out if you prefer) of 3500 calories to burn a pound of fat. There is no damage from calories, they are just a unit of measure of energy. Calories in a meal will depend on the quantity and type of food in the meal.
