Diabetic & SBD question *NEW Here*

Postby AmyLouWho » Sat Jan 16, 2010 10:59 pm

I am new here...I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes when I was 22. At that time, I was 245 lbs (at 5 ft 3). I stayed that way until I was 32. My Dr. prescribed me a new medicine called Byetta (its a shot you take before breakfast and dinner). I lost 60 pounds in a year. I was really excited. I started going to the gym and doing things for myself for the first time.

All of this change caused me to have more self esteem than I have ever had. I moved to a new town with a new job and left an extremley bad 10 year marriage and found myself! During that time, I met a wonderful man and we were married 8-15-09....but with marriage and happiness, also comes comfort and comfort food that's not really the best.

Well, for some reason, my diabetes would NOT go under control. No matter what I did or what I ate, nothing helped. In 2008, I had emergency gall bladder surgery. It was a rough recovery for me. During that surgery, they found a tumor on my liver. They went back for another surgery 5 weeks after the first. While this was all going on, I gained alot of weight back (I couldn't eat anything, and what I could eat to keep down wasn't good for me...milk, ice cream, pasta etc...).

So, here I am, at 200 pounds again, fighting my way back to health. After a 5 day hospital stay recently, I found the SBD and had my husband buy me the book. I have just finished the 2 week Phase 1 plan and not only lost 10 pounds, but I also have noticed a change in my sugars.

However, here is my question: in the morning, my sugars are HIGH, I mean, not crazy, but usually 120 to 130, but when I take my night sugars, I am between 79-97. I can't explain it.

Does anyone else have this issue, or know what the heck I can do??

Is your doctor concerned?

I'm type 2 and still controlling with diet and exercise, but do find my sugars go high between breakfast and lunch...often 170-200, especially after tennis. But my doc says as long as the average is 140 or lower it's ok. Also checks the A1C every 3 months. SBD has been good for controlling my sugars, but I do seem to be stuck weight wise. Lost 60 lbs, keeping it off but wish to lose at least 40 lbs. more.

Are you still on Byetta? I found that it is for diabetes primarily, but is also good for weight control. I'm considering............

Good luck on the beach

I am still on the Byetta, I do attribute it to my original weight loss.

My Dr told me to call him if my sugars go higher than a certain amount or below a certain amount...but my next appt with him isn't until March, but I do go see my GI Dr on Tuesday and he wants to see my log.

Other than that, I just keep plugging along. I go to my first Step class @ the gym tomorrow (well, first one in 13 months anyway).

I hope you are still visiting the board.

I threw away about a 1/2 of a tube of Byetta. Every time I take it, I get so nauseated I am in bed for about 8 hours. I've tried off and on for two years. I'm so envious that you are able to take it. I originally lost 20 lbs, but it was by throwing up.

It sounds like you are starting the night with a low level of sugars, and then it dips even lower as you sleep because you're not ingesting food during that time. It starts to dip too low, and so an insulin surge is created so that you don't reach a dangerously low level while you sleep. Then you wake up with high blood sugar because of it. What are you eating before you go to bed?
