Hi All! This is my first foray into a forum of this sort. I've taken great inspiration by reading the stories of others and now I am looking forward to diving in!!!
I started SB Sunday the 23rd. I've been disappointed with my weight for over 12 years, but really haven't done anything about it, except slowly gain more. Sure, I've gone on those New Year and pre-Summer 'binges'. . . the all-out, calorie restricted challenges that last about a week, maybe. And, then there's my old paradigm, "You can't lose weight without spending money." Which for me translated to: four weeks worth of Nutrisystem food (yuk), loads of LA Weightloss bars (boring), a juicer (any idea how much $$fruit$$ you need to squeeze to get a stinkin' glass of juice?), Hoodia and herbal thyroid boosters. . . oh, and how can I forget the Ab Lounger, treadmill, elliptical, Total Gym, Thighmaster (Thanks, Suzanne Summers), hand weights, ankle weights, Wii Fit, mini trampoline... I could set up my own gym; unfortunately, none of the equipment has been used much past the initial "this is it, this is the one that's gonna keep my interest and take of the weight" phase. You could argue I get some exercise dusting them all, but the truth is, I don't dust.
Anyway, I'm a hard-charging, A-type marketing exec who spends way too much time in meetings, sits way too long at the computer. . . and grazes all day long. I like to tell myself it's healthy grazing - yogurt, nuts, carrot sticks, goldfish (they're fish, right?), chocolate (antioxidants are important, lots of antioxidants) - you get the picture. I come home 7 - 8 pm every night to a wonderfully cooked meal and my half of the chardonnay bottle. Then I plop myself in bed with the TV on and wait for sleep to come, around 11:30. I wake up at 3am, stressing from the day, or over the day to come. Then, start all over again.
Did I mention my husband is a chef? A classically trained French chef, now retired and serving yours truly? Honestly, we all know the secret to good French cooking is plenty of cream, butter and salt. And he is a purist in that sense. Plus, he's from the Pyrenees Mountains, so every meal is meat and potatoes - very little from the veggie department. Your arteries would clog just watching him make mashed potatoes.
As fate would have it, my mom passed away in May (of heart disease), then I was quite unexpectedly 'RIF'ed' a week later (Reduction in Force; eg - fired). Whoa - now there are two crashing scenarios that will make you stand up and re-evaluate life.
There were things I needed to get in order. My mom's modest estate. My resume. My finances. Plans for my son, who will enter college next year. Helping my daughter through the angst and confusion of 16. Oh, and - here's another unexpected whoa - fighting for legal custody of my 15-year old niece. At least that's one battle I won!
Now it's August and the kids just started back to school. I've chummed the water for job prospects, networked the heck out of old colleagues and I'm waiting for my next job opportunity to come along. What's left? Oh, yea. Taking care of me.
Being unexpectedly unemployed - if you can believe this - is the BEST THING that ever happened to me. My attic is clean! My closets, ditto. Goodwill had to add extra staff to sort through the donations! The kids are settled, the hubby is happy to have me around, the dogs are nearly overcome with joy. The time constraints are gone. The stress is gone. The guilt is gone.
Everything is in good order, except I'm weighing in at 204 and can't climb a set of stairs without wheezing. It's time.
Throughout all my misadventures in dieting, in spite of all investments I've made and promises I've broke, the punchline is always the same: if you want to lose weight, you need to eat right and exercise.
I've done my research and South Beach makes sense - from a physiology standpoint, from a lifestyle standpoint, from an economic standpoint. I've often wondered if I was borderline hypo/hyper-glycemic, or carb sensitive. . . like so many others, the more carbs I eat, the hungrier I am an hour later. Never satiated.
Well, here I am, four days into SB, and feeling groovy!!!
The first day, I ate exactly according to one of the meal plans in the book. It was weird.
The second day, I grazed all day, albeit on protein and very low carb veggies.
The third day, I ate only SB-approved Phase 1 foods, but not necessarily according to diet-right portions.
The forth day, today, I'm not so hungry. I pulled out the book and went back to the meal plans and I'm cooking to code. I have no desire for large portions, nor do I miss carbs in the least. This just might work for me.
I also started walking 30 - 40 minutes a day, and already I am breathing easier. My shins hurt like you wouldn't believe, but my self-esteem is strong and the spirit still willing.
And, boy, do I love the mashed cauliflower - beats the heck out of my husband's taters.
