We love tomato sauce for our spaghetti, I assume that is not allowed so are there any alternatives?

Tomato sauce is fine (not sure why you're assuming it's not?)-- look for kinds without added sugar.
My FAQ-- food lists, portion guidelines, etc.

I must be confused. What are added sugars? Every can of plain tomato sauce I've seen has like 2g of sugars per serving. Are those not considered added sugars?

added sugars are listed in the ingredients, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or corn syrup come to mind. the sugars per serving you see are the natural sugars in the tomatoes.

In other words you have to read the ingredients list to make this determination. We don't really count grams of sugars or "carbs" at all. For the most part we just read ingredients to determine if a product is "beachy" or not. Tomato/spagetti sauce is fine in P1 too because tomatoes are OK and most sauces should be mostly tomatoes and seasonings, just not have any added sugar components to make it sweeter than it needs to be as nature intended.

Is Breyer's 1/2F/SF icecream allowed as a dairy?

Nope-- if you look at the ingredients, the only acceptable dairy item is the second ingredient:

Milk, Skim Milk, Cream, Polydextrose*, Maltodextrin (Corn)*, Sorbitol*, Whey, Glycerine*, Mono And Diglycerides, Cellulose Gel, Cellulose Gum, Natural Flavor, Guar Gum, Tara Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carob Bean Gum, Sucralose (Splenda ® Brand)*, Acesulfame Potassium*, Annatto (For Color), Vitamin A Palmitate. Sweetened With Nutritive Sweeteners And Nonnutritive Sweeteners. * Not In Regular Ice Cream Claims:No Sugar Added See Nutrition Information For Calories And Sugar Content Not A Low Calorie Food Soi: Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream

Then you have whole milk and cream as major ingredients, plus high glycemic starches like maltodextrin. Not good.

Or you could compare the nutrition facts to something that is a good choice, like 1% milk, which has 11g of sugar, 2.5g of fat, and 30% of the DV for calcium at 100 calories per cup. That ice cream product has 8g of sugar (it's no sugar added, not sugar-free), 8g of fat, and 16% of the DV for calcium at 180 calories per cup, so it would not be a good substitute. You're not getting enough of the good things and you're getting too many of the bad things for it to be dairy.

If anything, it works more as a sweet treat than as dairy, but the recommendation on ice cream is that you don't lull yourself into a false sense of security by regularly choosing junk like this that won't even taste that good, and just enjoy a small serving of real, premium ice cream as an occasional treat.

Sorry, but I'm a little dense sometimes, so I have a stupid question...

What does it mean that "Deleted items will be in RED? If I see something that is in RED, should I not eat that food? Or, why is it still listed on this list of allowed foods?

Why isn't it just deleted from the list if it is supposed to be deleted?? :?:

Thx,

I didn't prepare the list, but I think the changes are indicated by different colors mainly for the benefit of people who have done SBD before and think they remembered it differently. The only subtractions from the phase 2 list I see are sourdough bread, plantains, and cereal guidelines. As far as I know, all three guidelines are still OK, at least for some people. The changes to the phase 1 list seem to have been made for clarification, and to omit foods people were either having trouble with or rarely ate. Many of the guidelines have been made easier - for example, the cereal guidelines are more general, and brand name recommendations were replaced with general recommendations.

The sourdough bread recommendation seems hard to use. It seems to be saying that if for some reason you can't get whole-grain bread, sourdough would be OK as a second choice even though it isn't ideal. To me, that describes a food on the "eat occasionally/rarely" list, not the main list.

Ok, since I just started this diet, and if I want just a good list, I can copy this list and then just really delete the items in Red?

I am trying to copy these lists into MS Word for my own use. I am deleting things that I don't/won't ever eat and condense this list down for easier use, so I can just keep it in my wallet.

I'm intrigued. How is it that the Updated Phase 2 Food List thread lists the updated foods as of 4/30/2008, but the thread was started on November 19, 2004? I'm sure there's an explanation, I'm just curious...

Moderators have the ability to edit any post anyone makes here. So rather than creating new posts when things change (which would also throw off any links to them in the FAQ pages), it's just easier and more efficient to edit the original post and make the updates within them. Since I was a moderator back then, I was the one who actually edited that particular post and thought it would be a good idea to note the date of the changes as well. (FYI, it corresponds to the release of the SBD Supercharged book in the spring of '08.)
