Back on Track and well over 50

Postby sassybb » Sat Nov 22, 2008 4:21 pm

I was very active on this site a few years ago with the over 50 and on SBD??? but that group seems to have disappeared. Well I need support and want to commit to getting healthy.

SB has worked in the past as I am not very good about counting calories. I do like another site that allows me to enter and track my food so that I can see a real picture of my intake - fiber, cals etc.

Took me a bit to login but I am here and commited. b :D

This is my first post. I would be interested in joining an Over 50 group, too. :)

I think I will just stick here. I was very active in the other group "over 50 and on SBD?????" but it did become a very lengthy thread and most of us quite in 2007.

Welcome fluffy. Tell me more about you particular challange and where you are in the program!

I do think it is helpful to have support specific to being older and changing eating style  and commiting to exercise.

I am starting on phase 1. Not sure how that will look on Thanksgiving but am going to give it a go as I do not want to enter the new year without having some success at eating healthier and becoming active again.

I used myself in check and excercised a lot but by the end of grad school(spring 2008) I was not exercising at all. Of course my weight was more than I could imagine :o .

So I am commiting to being here- posting- tracking my intake and excercising. Will start with 30-45 minutes a day on the recumbent bike.

Hope to meet some others who are way over 50 with way over 50 (75) pounds to give back to the universe. Here is to are collective success!!!!! :D

I know I can do this - bb

I am 52 and am just starting SB. I would love to join your group. I think a thread for the over 50 group would be great as our metabolisms aren't the same as the younger group, nor have they dealth with menopause like I'm doing right now. Also have hypothyroidism, high cholesterol, high bp, pre-diabetes, asthma that I know would improve if I lost weight. I want to lose about 50 pounds.

So, if you have 4 good SB days and don't do SB on Thanksgiving, but don't go overboard, how do you think it would effect your weight loss during P1???

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

Sassy - I had been (notice the past tense) a successful Weight Watcher and lost 85 pounds in 2004. It has taken 4 years, but I did gain almost all of it back. :( After several more attempts to do WW, I decided to try SB. I have a friend that has been successful on SB, but stopped w/o reaching her goal. So, we are starting in Saturday. Since it's P1, she advised that we wait until after T'giving, so I'm following her lead. I'm getting everything ready and have bought beans, tomato juice, hummus, turkey sausage, eggs, 93% ground beef, and a few other things. I will get all the fresh veggies on Friday. You are doing great with the recumbent bike! Anyway, thanks again for the welcome, and thanks, too, for starting this thread.

Rebecca - health problems sure are good reasons to lose the weight. You are right, we have different issues than the younger SBers. I am 55, and went through the Big M about 6 years ago. I was lucky in that I had a fairly easy time of it. Other than hot flashes, it wasn't too bad. I sure don't miss those monthly visits, haha.

About me - I am married, have 3 grown children, and 6 grands. I worked as a Human Resources Director for years, then chose to stay home. My DH is 10 years older than me, and is retired. We live in the country, and our older DD lives nearby with her 3 girls. We help with child care for her, because of her work hours.

I love to read, scrapbook, travel, visit with friends, stay involved with my church, and am an animal lover. I like all sorts of music except hip hop and jazz.

Please tell me about yourselves.

unknown. you can't do it twice, once each way to find out the difference, so pick one and go with it. IMO, P1 weight loss is largely overrated. If a year from now you are still eating largely according to SB principles, one day won't make a bit of difference. The keys to success are longevity and consistency. You develop those skills during P2. I'm weird that way

redrox-thx for the info, support and experience. Going for the lifelong eating habit change rather than focused on the next couple of weeks.

fluffy- thanks for the intro. and Welcome Rebecca. If you need some meal strategies, I can help.

I am 61 but started with the over 50 annd like the sound of it. I have a child still in HS, just finished grad school and work in adminstration in a hospital. Not sure how the economy will affect my new job but am hoping that I can forge forward with this position for a while.

Thxgiving- for me will probably be phase 2 with whole grain dressing, pumpkin pie without a crust made with spenda and non-fat evaporated mild and a glass of wine.

First two days solid SB- did not sleep well last night but thought it might be due to simple carb withdrawl.

I am going to post my daily food plans just to keep me on track and keep myself real.
bk- cottage cheese, tomatoes and sliced almonds
sk- egg
lch- salad with tuna, avocado and oil and vinegar and a splash of lemon
sk- peanut butter on celery
dn- chicken breast baked with lemon, herbs and capers, red cabbage salad with lemon and olive oil and edaname beans.

Hello,

RR - I like the way you think. Consistency really is key.

Sassy - thanks for sharing your info. I'd say you have a very full life. Your food list looks yummy to me.

Tomorrow I'll be cleaning and Wednesday I'll be cooking. The extended family, on my side, will be at my sisters house for the noon meal Thursday, then we'll be back home for DH's brother at dinner. My DDs will help with that meal, thank goodness. I just can't believe how fast the days are rolling by.

Even though I haven't officially started SB yet, I'm still eating healthily. My exercise needs to be increased, though.

Morning Fluffy... Sounds like your holiday is action packed.

What do you do for exercise? When I am on my game I make sure that I get at least 20 minutes of something in a day regardless and then I move it up from there. I am hoping this site will help keep me focused. Probably will only be able to get in 20 on the bike this am and then try for more later. I used to trick myself. Walk away from the house for 10 and then it took another 10 to get home.

We usually have a big holiday deal, lately at friends with 20+ people- eating and drinking all day. My youngest wanted to be at home so we are, with just my bff and her dh. A simplified afternoon of food, games and movies.

I did not grow up here and now that my mom has died and my dad is ill, we do not get together here for holidays. I grew up in Ks but my db. family and dad live in Tx. We will be going there for xmas.

Excercise goal- 20min+

Food today (same as yesterday)
bk- cottage cheese, tomatoes and sliced almonds
sk- egg
lch- salad with tuna, avocado and oil and vinegar and a splash of lemon
sk- peanut butter on celery
dn- chicken breast baked with lemon, herbs and capers, red cabbage salad with lemon and olive oil and edaname beans.

Hope to see Rebecca back as well.

Hi Sassy, you're not by yourself, I'm here, but I do hope others join us.

Yesterday I was busier than a one-armed paperhanger, and didn't have a chance to post. Today has been busy, too, but here I am.

For exercise I love, love, love the treadmill, but because of repeated plantar fasciitis when I use it, I have been forbidden by my foot doctor to walk it. So, I do the WATP video, use a stretchy band, or do just old fashioned exercise like we did in gym class. Unfortunately, I don't do any of these things often enough. YAY for you, with your firm commitment to exercising every day. Maybe you'll rub off on me through cyberspace, haha.

Sounds like you'll have a nice T'giving with your youngest, bff and her dh. Small gatherings can be very nice. (I had to check back to see if I told you my plans or not, lol, and see that I did.) I am going to have some extra food tomorrow w/o going crazy with it. I'm taking some SB-friendly dishes to my sis's house.

I was surprised to see in the grocery store that Italian dressing has sugar in it! Am I stuck with just oil and vinegar? What kind do you use?

Have a happy Thanksgiving. :)

Oil and vinegar--- I use extra virgin olive oil or (evo) and balsalmic or rice wine vinegar and a squeeze of lemon or lime. Lemon peper with a light hit of salt. If you use tomatoes in your salad, they add some of the liquid I noticed that you are in the midwest but even a squirt of a pastic thingy of lemon will work. Or Minute maid has frozen lemon juice and that works very well in recipes calling for lemon. Or Paul Newman's dressing are without sugar.

If you store does not carry what you want, then ask for it but you can make your own and have it on the counter for a few days.

Good for you-- doing anything. For some darn reason we place ourselves last in terms of finding time to exercise. What is really going on--- Maybe we can address that here.

I hope you stick with me here as I am determined to be successful. We baby boomers are a can do group....... We will gather others, I am sure. Most beginner are waiting until the new year to start.

So take care, have fun and do not focus on the things that you can not have but the blessing that surround you.

Hello Sassy,

Like you, I think the board will be flooded after the new year, especially after all the holiday pounds show up on the "Iron Monster", lol. About the salads, I do love tomatoes. We live in the country and have a huge garden each year, and are just finishing up the homegrown tomatoes. Drs. Phil and Oz got me eating vinegar and oil dressing, and I don't mind it. A splash of lemon or lime juice sounds good - I'll give it a try.

After I get some weight off, exercise will come easier to me. The healthier I feel, the more I want to move, it seems. I think it's a good idea to find out why we put ourselves last at times. I would have a fit if my husband got into this shape, because I would worry so about his overall health. So why isn't it just as important to worry about my own?

Tomorrow is my last day before I begin Phase 1, and I have my daily food plan written out for the 1st few days. I am a terrible carb addict, and I know checking in here with you will help me over the rough spots.

Did you have a nice time today? I enjoyed my holiday, but I'm glad it's over and everything is back to normal. Well, until the Christmas parties start, that is. I am determined to stay OP throughout the season, though, since I will be finished with Phase 1 right beforehand.

It's almost midnight here, and time for me to turn in. Take care!
