Thanks WB and Suzie! Yes, I am doing the Corporate Challenge this year. You? It will be my first one because last year I was out of town and the year before I'd just started running and was nowhere near ready for that. (Of course I could have walked it, but...nahhh!)

Suzie, I think the biggest factor was my willingness to endure more pain than normal. Usually when I do a race I mostly want to get through it, and try to run it fairly well. But this time I wanted to see what I could do, so I pushed myself harder. As for training, I have slowed down some on my regular base runs and added in more speedwork. I think the track clinic is helpful as well. Did I talk about that here? On Thursday nights I'm doing group training - some didactic instruction about training and some group exercises and speed drills. The Thursday before the 5K we worked on form, and that was helpful as well.

Might do another 10K at the end of June. I did this one last year and it was my first, so it would be nice to run it again. I don't think I've repeated a race yet.

Hey runners!

Just wanted to check in to say I haven't dropped off the face of the earth.
Just busy......
FIL (whom I was very close to) passed away 2 weeks ago.... we spent a week in Idaho with family for the funeral.
Twin daughters (18 yr. old, high school seniors)..... have their Senior Prom this weekend and graduation in 3 weeks. Not to mention getting ready for family coming in for that and getting the yard and house all spruced up for their Senior Open House.
Also.... son (junior in college) is moving back home for the summer this weekend.....

Still getting in 30 plus miles/week running and am also cycling quite a bit. I am doing the 50 mile "Tour De Cure" (for Diabetes) on June 7th.
Hubby (who is an avid cyclist)..... is "threatening" to buy me a "Lady Leopard" http://www.leopardcycles.com/index.php to match his Leopard bike....... I don't know 'bout that.... you can buy a whole lotta running shoes for 4K plus!!!!

Hmmm.... maybe a pretty purple or maroon one for my 48th birthday next week???? :P

Doc!

You really shaved some minutes off your last one!

Thanks wiley!

It's been absolutely gorgeous here this week.... this morning I had a nice 3.5 mile run...... then after lunch, a 30 mile ride on my birthday present!
My first time on it I might add..... loved it!

Decided not to go with a Leopard... (didn't need a bike that pricey and didn't want to wait for them to build it!!)
So for 1/2 the price got a "Specialized" Ruby Comp.. It is awesome! http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=34252
(got a bit better deal than the website shows.... bike shop owner rides with the same cycling group as the hubby.. :D )

Had my first lesson in tire changing tonite.... hubby is very patient with me!

okay quick guestion runners.......

started the couch to 5k plan. on the 3rd week, when I upped to running the 3 mins, I noticed my knee swelling, not really bad pain, maybe a bit sore when I stand up, but uncomfortable, definate fluid, especially that night after I ran. Had not had that problem since starting this. I did previously, when walking one week off from school, 4 miles a day, on the 5th day the same thing happened.

do I need to wrap it? Ice it? heat it? and any ideas to prevent it?

thanks!

Wiley..... thanks so much for the birthday wishes!

JMB...
Don't wrap it......

I believe you'd said you were wearing decent running shoes? How old are they?

I would ice it after a work-out.
I would add inserts to my running shoes (if you don't already have them).
If it continues, you may have to back off a bit...

Not a lot of help I know.... it could be so many different things, stride, muscle strength, type of running surface, shoes...

Here's an article from "Cool Running" that might help..

JMB... how's the knee??

So I am finding that owning a nice bike really messes with my running....

In the last 7 days, I have run only 12 miles...... but have put 104 miles on my bike ... (including three 30 mile rides.....)

This morning I must "dust off" my running shoes!! :D

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Holiday weekend!

ETA.... I guess I can add 6 more running miles.
Just finished a pretty nice 6 mile run..... the weather was perfect!

Nice Birthday Bike Luvs....I have a specialized Allez so I am partial to specialized. Your model is much prettier and looks very fast. Do you swim? You would make a great trialthlete with that new bike :D

Hey suzie!
Thanks!

I have "thought" about a sprint tri maybe.... swimming is not my strong suit at all..... though I have kicked around the idea of training for a fall duathlon....

How's it goin' ?
Training for anything fun right now?

Yes....you should go for the duathlon...with your running and biking background and that sparkling fast bike, you would sweep them!

I just did a sprint triathlon Sunday. It is an annual one in my town called the "Pineapple man" They give everyone who places a pineapple. Unfortunately, I didn't get one this time around. I was not feeling well and really had to dig deep to get through the run. But.....it was a beautiful day. The open water swim in the river was a sheet of glass and the bike was nice and flat and fast. I also got to see my 8 year old at the transitions and the finish waving a sign that said "go Mommy" That really made up for my bad performance and it was all worth it just to see her :D

Just a note of thanks.. I ran accross this thread two years ago and was inspired to start a 5k program. Incredibly-I found myself finishing my first marathon in November. More importantly... I have made the best friends ever and found a love for running. Currently I am not training for anything but just running because I love it. Ok- I love it most of the time... I'm not so much loving it when it's already 77 degrees at 5am  Thanks to all of you who have been around and offered up so much inspiration!!

Hello Runners-
I hope to be part of your distinquished ranks one day. I envy you for your dedication and long distance endurance.

Here is my question and I apologize in advance if it has been mentioned before in some form or another..............

I am almost 40 and last year I started running along with my SBD lifestyle. I love the clarity and the peace of mind that it gives me. Unfortunatly, I injured my hip in Sept 07. Over use and was told to take it easy. Laziness and that injury kept me sedintary until I started back again in March 08. I am doing OK and am trying to take it slow and easy. Now it is my heel. Very sore! I am finding that I cannot run every day of the week because of it. It hurts at first then it is fine....... until I stop running. Sore again!
I walk for the first 4 minutes then I run for approx 12-14 minutes. Walk 2 minutes/run 3 and so on until I do 20-25 minutes total. approx 2.5 miles. All of this is done on treadmill. I enjoy running but am tired of injuries! I replace my shoes every 4 monthes or so.
What gives?

Thanks everyone! I look forward to hearing your thoughts advise-

It sounds like it may be plantar fasciitis?
MrsDayna... what type of shoes are you wearing? Are they good running shoes?
I've had plantar fasciitis before... it hurts! .... putting inserts into my running shoes really seemed to help. I just use the Dr. Scholls sports inserts....

Here is an article that might be helpful.... (it also includes some great stretches for your heel.)
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7 ... -0,00.html

it could also be a heel spur... but my money is on the plantar fasciitis.
Sounds like you are getting a great running base down.
Make sure to take at least one day off a week.... with your heel you could also cross on a bike or swim, til it feels better.

Hope this helps and thanks for "bumping" up the Runner's thread! :D

Before this thread falls to the second page... :D

Still running (and cycling  )... Rode 32 miles of very hilly county roads with the hubby on Sunday...
Ran 5 miles Monday... a 10K yesterday......... Today.. I did a "brick" ....... Rode 26 miles (no rhyme or reason for this distance other than it is a very flat, very fast "out and back")... then threw my bike in the car, threw on my running shoes... and ran a 5K.
So now I know why they are called "bricks".......... cause that is what your legs feel like when you make that transition from cycling to running..... I was seriously laughing at myself (to myself... :P ) about how slow I felt running. Took about a quarter mile to feel "normal"..... I thought it might feel a bit strange to run in cycling shorts.... but not at all.

I really think I will start doing this at least once a week.... just to mix things up a bit more.

Anybody running???? 8)
