lots of exercise and portion control

Hey Guys!
I am a reformed sbeacher...I know sb works for some people and more power to you...I have opted for a more practical approach....I eat healthy most of the time....and exericise with conviction every day...pilates has been my lifesafer....it is keeping my pants lose by reshaping my body, without having to eat so beachy...I try to control my portions without having to eat so differently from everyone else in my household....my pocketbook couldnt take it anymore...I found myself spending 20 to 30 dollars more every week just to keep the necessities on hand...I decided to move more and it seems to be doing the trick....I walk every evening and workout on a bowflex machine along with pilates 5 times a week which is not only effective but relaxing...I actually felt like I was relying more on the diet than the exercise which is not good for me....I felt like I was not losing enough and I was going up and down so much in my weight that it just wasnt worth giving up some of the things I enjoy...I have read many success stories but, I have also read so many post that are not getting results...just wanted to share my story...good luck to you all...

It's great that it's working out for you right now. I admit that I always get a kick out of testimonials like this because whenever I see "SBD" in print I tend to replace it with "eating balanced nutritious meals" -- I never refer to my diet as "SBD" in life. So your post reads "I'm a reformed eater of balanced nutritious meals." I just find that funny. I would add that if pilates and resistance training become important to you, and your goals in those areas become more ambitious, then fueling your body properly will become increasingly important. I won't start in on why your family should be "eating balanced nutritious meals."

oldpjams,
You are right, I do feel more inspired to eat healthy since I am working out so much...I follow most of the sb guidelines such as whole wheat "only" lean meats and lowfat yogurts, etc...I am just not as strict about only one wheat or one fruit....that sort of thing. I have always ate fairly healthy for the most part..Sbeach did teach me how to eat better...and, got me off to a good start...My family and I eat the same thing at dinner... most of the time it is healthy and balanced...if they do have something thats a bit too fatty, I will only have a small amt rather than not have it at all...this approach seems to work better for me than to say, that is off limits...anyway, thanks for your input...I guess, I need to find another forum...good luck to you all!

What does SBD have to do with eating "only one wheat or one fruit?" That doesn't make sense. If you eat whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables while limiting sugars, then isn't that the crux of SBD? I still haven't found anything that's "off limits" on SBD -- just things that should be eaten rarely.

Somehow people sometimes get the idea that they shouldn't add more of those foods in. I don't know why-- the guidelines are to work up to 2-3 fruit and 2-3 grains daily. I can't find it, but I believe that I've told her to try adding more in rather than stopping there at one of each.
My FAQ-- food lists, portion guidelines, etc.

SB since Nov '03
Goal: major weight loss (50+ lbs) & good health

sounds to me like you're on the beach and don't even realize it.

those of us that have only one grain/starch or one fruit per day have modified the original plan suggestion of 2-3 grains/starches and 2-3 fruits per day to fit our needs since the original SBD was intended for heart healthiness not weight loss...

I agree with both you and Red. South Beach is a healthy way of eating ...
But like you 1moretime I pretty eat whatever but I keep the portions small and I do exercise a lot and it has worked for me and I don't think I will ever change the way I eat. I can't give up junk food completely but when I do have my junk food I have small portions to just satisfy my cravings

I think for some people that SB is excellent for who needs to "control" their cravings. Some people just can't have a few chips so avoiding them all together works for them better than just trying to eat a few because they will end up eating the whole bag!!!

yes, I guess it does sound like weight watchers, I am looking more at calories than I am at points. I have looked up the formula for weight loss as far as how many you need to maintain and how many to lose. I try to get a good balance of fruits, vegies and protein and yes, carbs in whole wheat form. I am the type of person who needs structure and this seems to work for me.
