SPAMMER IDs/EMAILS

Nessa does this on her board and not a bad idea. Now that they are more few and far between with the new software, it's easier to keep up with as well. Idea is that if there emails are real, the spambots will pick them up from here. Oops. Had to recreate in Technical Issues forum as I can't make it a sticky in the Test and Spam area.

In general, this is not a particularly secure forum. Anyone can join at any time. You really don't know who people are until they have some track record of posts and in this particular case, he never posted anything, just sent out PMs to a bunch of people, so was more under the radar than most. That particular ID is now banned but there really is nothing that we can do about him returning under another ID either. But again, posting that you get something doesn't help me out. I need a user ID and preferably a copy of the PM to verify the allegations. And preferably sent to PM instead of a post. I always check my PMs first. I may or may not see a particular post or thread.

A good rule of thumb is if anyone sends you a link in a thread here, do not click on it unless you know the poster to be a regular member who you can get a sense that they are indeed the person they seem to be and you have some kind of within the forum relationship to begin with.

Again there were no security or privacy "breaches" or anything like that. The site is what it is and works the way it does. The internet is not always a nice place and not always inhabited by nice people. You also need to take responsibility not to start clicking on links that people you don't know send you. porn spammers are a fact of life on open msg boards. It's better here than it used to be with a security upgrade a while back, but the fact of the matter is that the board owner/system admin here is an absentee owner who doesn't actively participate or manage the forum and the underlying software that runs the board is rarely kept up to date with newer versions of the software which might have some further enhanced security options. (don't know for sure though)

With all the spam removal done on the site, there is a chance that your computer will get blocked. This can happen even if you are in the US, Canada, or some other country with a lot of members. If that happens, you're most likely using a computer or network that has been used for spamming, or your web hosting organization is very friendly to spammers.

If this happens to you, try to log on from some other computer and send one or more of the moderators a PM, and we'll do what we can.
