Hey Beth, funny... I just went to the Dr. this week too to see what my cholesterol check said and it was WAY down from the last time it was checked. It was showing as the high end of normal and now it's right in the middle. The Dr. was so happy to hear I'd lost 13 1bs since June - definitely proof SB works. Have a great night with DH tomorrow night. It's so nice to have the grandparents take the kid(s) so that us grown-ups can have grown-up time.

Hi Beth
Just wanted to stop by and say hello. Sometimes what you write is same as what I go through, with sudden eating slips, often out of the blue. I later think about what I SHOULD have done instead of food! Drink WATER!!! Water~ Fills up your stomach and takes the edge off and also makes up for the craving by "neutralizing " the taste buds. I will try it out. Someone told me that brushing your teeth is great to break the urge to pig out. Same for sucking on a lemon. Haven't tried those things yet, but at least, there is something to try.
How is your weekend going? Foodwise and otherwise?
Thank you for being there on my bad days. That's what friends are for, right? So thank you for being a friend.
I wish I could bring myself to start cooking. Those BBB sound delicious!
If you stick to SB, your numbers will drop. First Chol and blood sugar, later hopefully the lipoproteins as well. Good job. I pushed mine back under 200 by cutting out real eggs, hard cheese, shellfish (lobsters, crabs, shrimps- low cal but hi chol) and red meat. It works. Just so that you know in case you need to watch it.

I hope your drill weekend is going well for you. Does it change now that you're deploying?

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I really appreciate you. See you when you get back! :)

A Woman of Many Hats

Postby purenavygirl » Mon Dec 07, 2009 2:21 pm

Hi Everybody! Happy Monday! I didn't expect so many visitors while I was away, but it sure put a smile on my face this morning. (Considering we had our first snow this morning and the drive to work sucked - crappy drivers!)

Judi - hello again! I've heard about the drinking water thing to help with hunger - I do try that. Brushing your teeth sounds like a good plan. And of course, a little extra dental hygiene doesn't hurt either! When you decide to start cooking, let me know, I'll send you my modified BBB recipe. It's really good, SB friendly and the texture is decent. I'm definitely looking forward to keeping the lipid numbers in check - my big motivator for being on SB. I need to be healthy for many reasons! I definitely agree with your ideas on cutting out those foods. I try to eat most of those sparingly as it is, so I'm sure that's part of my lower cholesterol success. It is a good feeling, isn't it?

Jen, Michelle, Beaching It...Hello to you too! My update should answer/address your posts. Multi-tasking! :P LOL

I had a pretty decent weekend. Was BUSY on Friday night. I picked DS up from the sitter. Headed home and made a quick dinner and back out by 6:15 pm to get the oil changed in the car and grocery shop. Dropped DS off at Grandma's around 8:30 and was home around 9:00. Had to finish packing and straightened up around the house a little bit. Got on the road around 10:20 pm. Got to Toledo at Midnight. Went straight to bed.

One of my unit members who also travels from home calls me around 2:00 am (thought we'd be up and out partying like we used to) and wakes me up. Long story short, I get up, we have a glass of wine and chat for a bit. (This person just got back from a deployment and we were good friends before they left - it was good to catch up) By this time, it's getting close to the time I get up and I'm not tired. I went back to my room and took a shower and put my uniform on. Breakfast starts at 6:00 am for us. I had scrambled eggs with salsa and a pinch of cheddar cheese, one small sausage patty, lowfat yogurt and a small glass of orange juice.

Lunch went "okay". We had fajitas catered in. I had one small flour shell with steak and then has some extra chicken put on my plate. I didn't eat any rice. I had some Mexican style corn, but did not eat it all. There were fresh tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos, etc. available for toppings, so I loaded up on those. I used a little sour cream and drank a Diet Coke.

DH arrived to my hotel around 6:00 pm. We got to the Christmas party around 6:20 or so. It was decent - the drinks were EXPENSIVE. I had a Captain Morgan and Coke as my cocktail and drank water and ice tea with the meal. It was buffet style - I made a wonderful Greek salad with lots of veggies and a small scoop of cottage cheese. I had steamed broccoli and cauliflower, some kind of breaded chicken breast w/ sauce, beef and mushrooms and a small helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, a roll and chocolate cake for dessert. I know, SB carb unfriendly, but that was my splurge for the weekend. It was a time of Christmas cheer! DH and I stopped at a little local bar to watch a live band on the way home - I had 24 oz Bud Light beer. Hit the hay around 11:30-midnight.

I missed breakfast on Sunday morning, didn't drink enough water throughout the day, did alright at lunch - big salad and a small portion of BBQ chicken. No snacks. I was hungry when I got home around 5:30 pm. I ate 3-4 doughnut holes (I bought for DH at the grocery Friday night.) and a string cheese. I drank a bunch of water and we headed off to pick DS up. We had pizza (meatlovers w/ onions) from a local joint. I drank water. MIL made carmel popcorn and I indulged. I think maybe a little stress snacking was happening, plus I was ready for bed.

Either which way you dice it, I lost a pound from last Monday. Back down to 158 lbs (again). If I can hit 157 again, which has been my lowest on SB so far, I would be happy. My goal is 155 when I head to Florida the week of Christmas.

To answer all the drill/deployment questions. I still have to drill until I deploy; my orders start 07MAY10. I found out I am going to Kuwait. Not sure what I'm doing over there yet. My last drill weekend will be in April. I will try to get an A/T (2 weeks training) in before I leave and another 4 day training in at Little Creek this spring. I have a lot of training and paperwork and medical readiness things that need done between now and then. Focusing on that is my main priority next to my civilian job at this time. Well, besides family!

I need to scoot. Have a magnificent Monday! Despite the snow, I'm feelin' the sun, sand and surf! (While staring at the loaf of Friendship Bread a co-worker brought in for our holiday festivities.)

PS - I did 30 minutes (2 miles) of Walk Away the Pounds this morning!

12/07/2009

With the snow this morning, I cut my breakie time short so I could make a safe drive in. I didn't have much time, so I grabbed it and out the door I went. Same for my morning snack. I didn't have a chance to put my menu together on Friday night, so I feel helpless! heh heh I'll get things squared away tonight.

That, my dear, was an action packed weekend. And the fact that you're so aware of how SB is affecting your meals is spectacular. You are such a joy to read. Sounds like DH is coming around to your way of thinking lately? I sure hope so. Life is so much better when those men cooperate! (tongue in cheek!)

Hi Beth
Quite a weekend. Sounds like you managed the challenges well though. Kuweit will be nice and WARM. Too bad if you have to cover your arms (hopefully not face) for the religious nuts who mind. But you should enjoy it there, and it's not too dangerous I think.
I am hanging in there, had a beach day yesterday and started off OK today. Don't love the slim in 6 though. How is the walk away??? in fact, what is it, a walking program? I need something I can like. The slim stuff has NO real music, and the 5 notes they play in the background are irritating. Otherwise, doable...
I would like to hear your modified BBB recipe. If easy, maybe I will give it a go. I really don't use too many carbs, mostly veggies and protein, little dairy from time to time, perhaps some beans would be good for comfort and stamina. I do feel tired a lot, but I think it's the winter cold and gray.
Let's do a mini challenge- I try to hit 160 by Christmas, you 157 (GOOD for YOU, girl!)
Cheers

A Woman of Many Hats

Postby purenavygirl » Tue Dec 08, 2009 2:19 pm

Hi Ladies! Yes, it was a busy weekend. But, finally, things are looking to slow down for a bit. Yay!

Michelle - Every time DH and I start talking about the deployment, it seems a little easier. The friction is still there, but a little less each time. I'm still in a state of confusion as to how to absorb it all - but things are getting better. Over time, you guys will get the updates, too. I feel comfortable talking fairly openly here, which I haven't done much of in the past. So, again, here's to my multi-purpose journal! :P

Judi - I love the challenge idea. My goal is 157 by 12/18 - right before I leave for FL. I don't know when you weigh in, but you can pick your closest date to Christmas as well. To not add to the stress of the Holidays, we'll just make it our goal - no bad consequences if we don't make it. Because, we will eventually anyway. :) I do like my Walk Away the Pounds routines. The music is pretty basic - I keep it way down because DH and DS are sleeping when I do it, so I couldn't really tell you much more than that. It is doable and fun (the time goes QUICK). Maybe I'll do a little research and get back with you on some ideas? Also, I'll send you a message with my modified BBB recipe.

Okay, on to other things. I did my 30 minute Total Body Workout this morning. Happy Happy Joy Joy! Two days in a row! I think I can actually get at least 4 days if not all 5 in this week. That's my BIG goal for this week.

Last night, I made a 100% SF SB friendly chocolate chip cookie recipe that I found on the forums. OMG - were they good. They didn't spread out like real cookies; they were more like walnut sized bites. I am happy to say that they actually stayed fairly moist, too. I might try adding a little NAB or NPB to the mix next time, just to help it out a little more.

I was a little hungry when I got home. I ate a LF string cheese, one bite of leftover pizza and a few handfuls of carmel popcorn. I know, another slip in the sand. But, I'm dusting my bum off and ready to go again!

12/08/2009

Breakfast
8 oz V8
1 Egg w/ 1 chopped green onion
1/3 C Salsa
2 Slices Canadian Bacon

Morning Snack
Naval orange
1 LF Mozarella string cheese

Lunch - Tacos
2 Ortega Whole Grain taco shells
1/2 C LF meat w/ reduced sodium taco seasoning
Lettuce, onions, cheese, FF sour cream, taco sauce (maybe tomatoes?)
1/2 C FF Refried beans
1 SF SB Chocolate Chip cookie

Afternoon Snack
None...forgot to grab it at lunch. :(

Dinner
Tilapia fillet
2 C Baby spinach sauteed in EVOO
Splash of FF H&H and couple sprinkles of butter buds
2 T Pine nuts
2 T LF Mozzarella cheese

Dessert
1/2 C LF Cottage cheese
1 pkt Splenda
Dash of Cinnamon
Sprinkle of baking cocoa powder (won't do that again - didn't care for it)

I havent posted in this journal yet, but i wish you the best of luck with your deployment and as ive told everyone else, slipups happen, its your determination and resolve to get back on the plan that really goes to show how dedicated you are to meeting your goal. Keep up the hard work :D

What part of Florida you going to? I live in Jacksonville not far at all from Mayport so figured id ask out of curiousity. Its kinda wet and rainy down here right now so good that you're waiting a bit.

For exercise i personally am getting bored of walking and doing the elliptical so ive considered doing tae-bo again or even P90X which is supposed to be a really good exercise program. Uses basic exercises like pushups and pull-ups and modifies them to work different areas. I told myself i wouldnt do anything besides running and the elliptical before i dropped below 300 though so i still have time.

Hi Beth
Thank you for the BBB's! Answered you back on that.
I am not giving up on my 3 lb goal, although right now, it may be a 5 lb goal, but the extra two will come off if I stop eating off the beach pretty fast. The other 3...well, I am full of hope. So we are ON, girl!!!!
I will look at walk away the lbs. Didn't like the sliminsix, the music is horrendous and to me, the music is motivating. No music, no motivation. OUCH. I had high hopes from that one.
I hope you are in good spirits, drills and all. It's not easy, but at least, you will be in a warm place and not too much action, hopefully. Boredom wins on this topic! (deployment).
Have a great day!

Well, crap. I must have did something wrong. I had a partial response to Judi and Jeff, and it's gone... :?

First of all, welcome to Jeff! Thank you for stopping by. The weather is always comfortable and the sun is always shining! 8) Just watch out, you might get splashed! heh heh Thanks for the encouraging words. No matter how strong and how much willpower I think I have, it's always nice to hear someone sending well wishes my way. :)

I am going to Oviedo area - East / Northeast of Orlando. I lived in the Cocoa / Titusville area when I was in gradeschool, so I'm not very familiar with Jacksonville. However, it'll be nice to get a warm week in. (Here, we're expecting a high of 22 degrees tomorrow.)

My co-worker does the P90X. She and her hubby have had good results and they're doing to lower intensity version. If you have the time to commit to it, based on what she says, I would recommend it! Unfortunately, I don't. So, I do the DVDs and elliptical at home. I try to get cardio in a few times a week and 2 days of strength/toning with 5 lb dumbells. I also occasionally do my own "old fashioned" sit ups and push ups when I don't have time to do routines. I have about 30-45 minutes a day, max, that I can give to exercise. I do what I can! If you do the P90X, I'd love to hear how it goes. Definitely keep in touch with me.

Judi - we're back on track together. Let's do our best to help think of each other when those temptations arise, so we can report back the good news at our next weigh in! :D Even if we don't meet our goal, we're not failing, we're continuing our journey on the Beach. It's a lifetime commitment and sometimes those milestones come slow. Just remember, you (and me) will get there! On to the workout DVDs... There are tons of Walk Away the Pounds DVDs. I got mine at Wal Mart for $10. I can't remember what it's called exactly, but it has 5 different workouts on it. There are a variety of them. If you seem like you'd be into it, try it out. The price is right, none the less. Like I said, I'm not real sure on the music since I keep it down so low in the mornings while DH and DS are sleeping. Leslie Sansone, the instructor, talks thru most of it and is quite entertaining. One other solution that you might enjoy is 10 Minute Solutions. The Fat Blasting Dance Mix has really good reviews and I would guess good music. I have their yoga and Latin dance videos and I enjoy those. There are 5 routines, 10 minutes each on the DVD. You can do 1 routine, all 5 routines or create a workout using any number of the different segments (in any order you want!). So, it's pretty cool. Someone else recommended the Wave to me on another post. You can get the whole Wave kit at Wal Mart for about $50-60. It looks fun and enjoyable, but I don't have the $$$ for that right now.

Anyway, I better get going. Hope you have a nice evening! If I missed any of your questions/comments, let me know. I'll try to get back with you tomorrow.

Take care,

Beth

Well a co-worker bought the entire series like 3 months ago getting himself all excited and starting a weight loss plan, he has the whole setup and apparently has never even cracked the seal on the dvds or taken the equipment they give you out of the box. He asked me if i wanted it for real cheap like $35 when i believe he said it goes for around 120 or higher. Seems like kind of a no brainer to me and im always willing to try new things :D Right now while im taking a break in between my degrees and schooling i have pfft...probably 5 hours a day to dedicate to exercise if i want to so time isnt a big issue.

I'll definetly keep in touch though. At first i felt really out of place being a male on a forum dominated by females, but i feel right at home now, all of you are great people :D

Postby purenavygirl » Wed Dec 09, 2009 2:12 pm

Jingle, jingle, jingle...You will hear my sleigh bells ring...I am old Kris Kringle...I'm the King of jingling...

I stayed up way too late last night playing Santa Claus! Oh, how I love it!!! Needless to say, I slept in this morning and did not workout. I'm having my parents over for dinner tonight, so I won't be exercising at all. However, that's okay, I'm a little sore from yesterday's and don't want to hurt myself.

I made Junior Sailor of the Year at my NOSC! I have to make a trip back to Toledo on Friday morning to have my photograph taken. I think they will then send my package to a regional level. I'm proud of myself! I guess I'm leaving for this deployment with a BANG! I need it all on my side, as I want to take my advancement exam one year early (Fall of 2010).

Have a beautiful day. The week is half over! Here's to our walks, stumbles, falls and everything that happens in between on the Beach. Love to all!

Hi Beth! Sounds like life is happy where you are!!! :-) And, a BIG congratulations on your achievement!!! It feels good to be recognized, I am sure!!!
The walking tape- how is it? Just walking? Can you use it while on a treadmill? For me, if there is no music, I don't feel I am having fun. I also don't like relentless cardio, like for ex sliminsix. What would you recommend? I looked up the 10 minute ones as well as the walk away ones, there are so many kinds, I got confused!!!! Don't want to make another mistake. I am sending back the one I got. I hope you have a good recommendation :)
Have a beachy day-

Hey, Judi, every hear of Occam's Razor? It is the theory that the simplist answer is usually the correct answer (nutshelled). If you have a treadmill, hon, how about the idea of just turning the radio on? Decide how many songs you're going to walk through and how many you're going to run through and increase each day. I'm just sayin'. 8)
