Kelsey's new life journal

Postby kelsey » Sun May 09, 2004 12:38 am

I have started this journal 3 times now and hope to get it started today. March 23 I weighed in at 389. I wasnt shocked but was very upset that I had let myself go this far. I was at my first appointment to see about having the bariatric bypass surgery. The doctor said I was a good candidate if I lost 80 pounds. So Im sitting there thinking if I could lose 80 pounds why would I be here. His suggestion was that I should do nothing but shakes under his supervision and pay $120.00 a week for the shakes.
I decided I could cut back and lose it myself. For 2 weeks I ate most anything but always less, then the second person told me about southbeach and i decided to give it a try. What a difference was not hungry at all. March 13 I was at 360. 1 week of P1. I was sick though and I lost water weight. My ankles are normal. Halleluia

How AWESOME Kelsey! This is definitely a diet that works (especially for those of us who really like food!). I went to a picnic with lots of good food available and carefully picked out foods that were SBD appropriate. I wasn't even tempted by the other things (at least not much...the CRAVING wasn't there).

I have a friend who just had a gastric bypass (last fall). She has done fairly well...but guess what? They want her to eat high protein, low fat, low sugar foods in small quantities. Hmmm?? What does that sound like?? If she doesn't eat those kind of foods, she gets the dumping syndrome and she says it's miserable.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that for those of us who have alot to lose, losing slowly is better for your skin. Losing slowly and drinking lots of water is supposed to help the skin to shrink back to normal better than if you lose too quickly. I don't know about that, but it makes sense. My goal is to NOT have a tummy tuck when I lose all this weight! I want a flatter belly without surgery.

Good luck to you and post often. I think it helps.

kelseys journal

Postby kelsey » Sun May 09, 2004 2:25 am

I have been busy for the last couple weeks reading so many good posts from so many great people. I feel I'm very unorganized compared to others. I eat things that are ok but I dont seem to do much cooking.
I eat a salad every lunch at work and usually chicken or turkey. I very seldom feel I need a snack but usually in evening I have one. I wish I had started this journal when I had started on P1. The part that was the best about this diet is that I dont feel hungry. The second day of P1 I was able to stop taking my daytime insulin. I was still on pills and my lantus at night. I was only able to stay on P1 for 1 week. By what I have read it was probably my ketones that made me sick. Because Im diabetic and weighed so much. Going to P2 was great. A bad cold gave me a week set back but now am back on track again.

Annecolorgreen I have been really thinking about that surgery. If I knew that I could stay eating like this I would not have it. It is expensive and dangerous. But I had decided that there was no hope for me to get this weight off. I have lost a lot already but it was mostly water retention.
I have been on so many diuretics and they dont work and start this diet and there it goes. They tell you to stay away from salt but what they should say is stay away from so many carbs. my first goal is to be under 350 so i can weigh at my regular doctors office. Never thought I would weigh more than the doctors scales. I really feel this diet is the one that is workable. :D

Hey Kelsey. You are doing great! I'm rooting for you. You keep up the good work. I hope that you will continue on your path to success. I know you are headed for a goal for bypass surgery. I had a friend who was thinking of doing the same thing. With the success in this diet, do you think that maybe you won't need to go through the surgery and continue with South Beach diet till you reach your goal? If you can loose 80 here then why not 80 more with out the surgery. Or do you have medical reasons for proceding with the surgery? I'm not trying to discourge you from the surgery I was just wondering. There are so many people in this forum that have lost lots of weight with SBD. I hope they will incourage you as they have me.
Good luck and I'll be cheering for ya!

Hi Kelsey!-
Yay! Another Kansan! Welcome to this diet. It is wonderful, and I really think that you would definately see results if you tried it. I've always wanted gastric bypass surgery, but could never afford it. I've been a failure with diets ever since I started dieting like 14 years ago. I started this diet 3-8-04, at 257 lbs. Now I weigh 227 lbs. I can't really imagine going back to the way I used to eat. I just feel so much better. I have more energy now. Before I started this diet, I was put on blood pressure pills at the age of 27. Since starting this diet, my blood pressure has been really good, and I'm hoping next month when I go to my next appointment, I will be able to stop taking them. Oh, and don't worry. There's a lot of us on here that go simple with foods. I for one am an aweful cook, and am having a good day if I can make fried eggs right! I wouldn't worry about not cooking all the time. Along with this journal, I keep one in a notebook that I write in every night too. I put what I eat, measurements, weights, goals, and how I feel, what's going on in my life, whatever. It helps too. I understand where you're coming from with the way you're thinking on the surgery and everything. Losing 80 lbs. would be a huge accomplishment, and I really think you'll be able to do it. I wish you the best of luck, and if you ever need anything, hop on over to my journal. Take care!...Poet-Dee

The first time I weighed and lost 29 pounds everyone was saying well see you dont need the surgery. That day I bit off a lot of heads, in my mind I knew I could lose the weight but keep it off and not put it back :?:
That after 1 week. Now with reading a lot here and really getting used to P2 Im questioning myself too. There have been many success stories with the surgery but if you eat wrong you can ruin it. May 6th I had a hysterscopy and a d&c. The nurse said dont worry about your diet today.
I came home and it was like the more wrong stuff I ate the more I wanted. That is not a good feeling. I want to do this without the surgery now. But Im scared. I will die sooner if I dont do something. There were days before I started to diet that I hurt so bad that if I didnt have to go to work, I could see how you could just lay in bed and just grow.
30 pounds off and my back is much better. My plan today is to first see how I go with this, and would be wonderful if I would not have to go with the surgery. It is expensive and even whats left over after insurance pays their part is a lot. 37 pounds sounds wonderful but 153 to get to 200 sounds very tough. I hope all my new friends here will stay even after they reach their goals and we can all help each other.

Kelsey,
I was told i was a good candidate for the bypass surgery too but my insurance company wouldn't touch it. I know that if I don't get my weight off I won't live long enough to get my children raised and that is a very depressing thought. I know in my heart that I have to do this not only for them but for ME! I deserve this!!! And so do YOU!!!
I have gotten such awesome support here and I know that it's one of the biggest reasons I have done so well so far. I'm totally enjoying the SBD and I know that I can do this! I'm just barely under 350 right now... but I'm determined to get my weight off! I'd love to be one of your beach buddies if you'd like.

Kelsey--

I worked with a lady years ago who had a tremendous amount of weight to lose (I honestly don't know how much, but it was obvious). She could hardly do her job (nursing). She worked with the TOPS program (take off pounds sensibly) which is essentially just a support group...no special diet or anything that I know of. She also did water aerobics after she got to a point that she could. I know she did end up with gastric bypass surgery which really shocked me. She said it was because she reached a point where she couldn't lose anymore. I think it was her excess skin. I thought having THAT surgery would have made more sense. Oh well. Me and my opinions  . She really did awesome though...she made a huge change and so will you!

With all this support how could I not make it. :)
I hope I can become a help to all of you as you have already become a help to me. Its mothers day and I have been invited to a bbq for lunch.
I have made my famous potao salad. And will take a little egg salad for me. My son in law loves to roast ears of corn I think I will limit myself to a couple bites. Or maybe it wont even tempt me. I just never know anymore. It seems things dont taste the same to my mind anymore.
But yesterday green beans with spicy pepper was almost like desert.

I keep reading journals and they are so interesting.
I guess I will start today with what Ive eaten
and will continue. Everytime a diatician or doctor tells me to this I always quit after a couple days. But will not stop this time.
But no laughing at what I eat at certain times I have no plan and never know what Ill decide when look in refrigerator.

white ground turkey mixed with northern beans and tomato sause
.75 oz cheese bar

1/4 C. egg salad

grilled pork steak
baked beans
2 bites from a grilled corn on cob

1 sf popsicle

white ground turkey
northern beans
cheese

1/2 C mixed fruit

do not usually eat beans all day I wonder if Wendys small chili is ok :?: I have eaten that for a meal many times and it satisfies and doesnt seem to make me hungry after.

Hope everyone had a wonderful day

Hi Kelsey--

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. It sounds like you are doing great! I probably would avoid the nacho chips in the future though. Maybe you could bake some pita chips or something? Oh...and I get Wendy's small chili all the time. It's incredibly, amazingly filling considering what I used to get out. I've read lots of people get the chili and eat it regularly with good results. Are you getting all your water in?

Hope today is a better day!

Anne thank you about that chili answer. I think I could eat one a day.
I am feeling much better today so it was probably a bug of some kind.
I was pretty sure wasnt supposed to have the chips and they really didnt add anything to the salad. So in the future will stay away. I started with cheerios today but think I should have a protein too so will grab a piece of cheese before work. It was nice just having an easy breakfast. I think its time to review in my book so know Im making ok choices.
