Nicole's Journal

Postby ushotmedown » Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:09 pm

Hell everyone! :D
I'm Nicole, I'm 19 and I live in England. I love tattoos and piercings! I have 2 tattoos and 16 piercings so far
I am currently engaged to my wonderful man and we are getting married in around 2 years and 9 months.
I currently weigh 275lbs as of this morning. I have suffered from eating disorders in the past (anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating) and have gained around 100lbs in a year to get to the point I am at currently. With the help of my wonderful man I am trying to overcome this and lose weight the healthy way.
I have just given up smoking and am looking into restarting a new course at university in September as I hate the one I am on at the moment.
I want to get down to between 119-126lbs. So I have a long way to go
So that is enough about me at the moment I think

Welcome, Nicole! You found the right place. Take some time to get familiar with the FAQs to see what this way of eating is all about. Feel free to ask questions, and find some time to look through the Phase 1 topics -- there are plenty of recipes and hints. Good luck!

I started this morning and i've rediscovered my love for peanut butter
I was a bit dizzy today but I've been up since 4am so that could help attribute, but I did take a nap for around 3 hours just before dinner. Bought a south beach diet book online.
Here's what I had today, i'm vegan and also like my meals rather repetitive so you may see this quite a lot here:

B:
1/2 packet tofu (protein)
1/2 onion, 1/2 cup of peppers and spinach (Veg)
cooked in 1tsp olive oil (fat)

L:
2 vegan burgers (protein)
2 cups salad (veg)
1 tbsp salad dressing (oil)

Snack: 1tsp peanut butter and celery stalk

D:
2 vegan burgers (protein)
2 cups salad (veg)
1 tbsp salad dressing (oil)

Snack: 1tsp peanut butter and celery stalk

I see all the vegan choices. Do you drink milk or eat yogurt? You should add two servings of milk or yogurt to help with the dizziness and the possible energy drop, if you can do dairy.

I can't tolerate dairy but would soy milk be an acceptable substitute?
How much would you say a serving of milk was?

Supposedly it is the lactose in the dairy that is of value in fighting off the "SBD Flu" of P1. Soy milk has other benefits but it wouldn't address this particular point. I also drink a lot of it (Almond Breeze or Silk) but I also drink cow's milk and eat yogurt. Do what you can and don't do what you can't - this is a change in your way of eating more than it is a diet plan, so it has to work for YOU. SO ignore my suggestion for now.

To answer your other question, 8 oz of milk or a 6 oz cup of plain yogurt (I use greek yogurt with agave) is a serving, and it is suggested that two servings a day are needed.

Seek out Bethy for another opinion, she is the Milkmaid Queen around here. (I almost typed "Resident Milk Source" but that sounded bad somehow.)

Hi Nicole,

Welcome to the beach! Soy milk worked just fine for me...I really try to avoid dairy products of any kind. As long as you eat every 2-3 hours you should be OK. A little spoonful of peanut butter and a half cup of soy milk would usually get me over feeling a little weak. Dairy is 2 cups of milk or yoghurt total per day. So you can have 2 cups of soy milk per day.

Take care,
Mary Ann

Mike's udderly got me mixed up w/ Kyan. Welcome Nicole! Best of luck to you. Eat beans! They'll give you the good carbs that you need to keep your energy up and your cravings down in P1. You can have a few 1/3 to 1/2 cup servings a day. MIKEY has to drink real milk b/c he's Old and Sickly and just because I Say So. But you are young and healthy and vegan so Soy Milk is just fine. :D

I did write out a reply but it seems to not have posted :?:
I said I added in the soy milk for today in the form of:
one tea, no sugar
one hot chocolate (75cals worth of cocoa powder)

I'm guessing soy yoghurt would be an acceptable substitute to normal yoghurt?
You all are lovely people and I feel welcome here already! :D

So I weighed in this morning. I know most of my loss is water weight but I'll take what I can get.
According to my scales, I lost... 6.6lbs! Putting me at 268.4lbs.
It has put me in a great mood for day two :D

So today there was a bit of a wobble on the plan.
However it was not a conscious one.
I went out with my boyfriend after lunch and about half way through I almost passed out.
The only food I had available to me were some naked bars.
They are all vegan, and contain nuts and fruit and a tango ice slushy.
I'm not going to dwell on some small mishap that was out of my control.
Apart from that my meals were identical to yesterdays.
On a more positive note...
I bought some new curling irons and some bandanas so I can practice my 'pin up hair'
I practiced one style before dinner and I think it looks okay.
That is a big step for me to admit, because not only do I have an eating disorder but I have body dysmorphic disorder too.
A positive step forward I hope :)

Nicole-
The reason they call me the "milk freak" around here is I worry about weakness and dizziness on P1 when it's done without the recommended milk and beans. I know you can't have the milk, so please please try to get several 1/3 to 1/2 cup bean servings daily to help stabilize your blood sugar. If you are feeling so weak this early, you really need to get on to some good carbs without delay and stick with them. Any kind of beans are good:red, white, black, navy, pink, eat the rainbow. I know there's vegan chili. Chick peas are great on salads, and roasted chick peas make a good carby snack when you need some energy. Prevent those blood sugar crashes by taking advantage of all the healthy carbs you're allowed in P1 and you won't have to reach for the bad kind out of sheer dizzy desparation. And, take it easy on yourself physically until you get over the early days, get lots of rest, eat well, relax and count curling your hair as exercise. (Sincerely, your mum  )

Okay, I am going to be the party pooper here and the voice of reason. I've gone back and re-read all of your posts and I have two things to say.

You are yourself up for failure if you continue to repeat menus to the extent you are.

And second, and most important (and I don't want to hurt your feelings but I tend to say things right between your eyes) you have mentioned twice that you suffer from eating disorders. THIS particular diet is challenging at best and outright grueling at it's worst. I HIGHLY recommend you get your doctor (which ever kind you have) to sign off on it first, ESPECIALLY if you are taking ANY medications... and even if you aren't. This diet isn't something to play with. You have to stay regimented in the RIGHT direction or it's going to mess with your blood sugars, metabolism AND over all health.

I will be happy to encourage you and root for your success, but I won't be giving you specific diet guideance. I think when you do this particular diet, you're going to need someone more educated and professional than I am. :)

Best wishes,
Not-so-Funny-Cide
