SBD after lap band surgery?

Postby annecolorgreen » Sat Aug 04, 2012 6:48 am

Has anyone tried this? I had lap band surgery in October of 2008 and lost 80+ pounds...but am slowly but surely gaining weight again and didn't lose all that I needed to. My physician is adamant that I only eat three meals a day and no snacks and, of course, no liquid calories. The other issue that I have is that I am a "runner"--slow, but I run. I've had difficulty getting enough calories if I eat correctly to have the energy to run.

I would love to chat with someone with my same experience.

Did you talk to your doctor about what kind of food you would eat for snacks? Some people might think of "snacks" being equivalent with junk food, but on SB you'd be eating something healthy like a piece of fruit or some nuts, not chips or something like that.

no, he means "no snacks"...the reasoning is that the band is supposed to keep you full so that you don't need snacks. You should be able to get all that you need with three meals.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with that, and you should follow what your doctor says. But I wouldn't be able to do that either (I really need my snacks to keep my blood sugar stabilized and to support my exercise), so if it were me, I'd have a very specific discussion with my doctor (although you may have already done this) about exactly what I'm doing, what I would be eating, and what my needs are. He/she may be able to customize that general rule for you given your specific situation.

Here are some links that may help arm you:
Some other lap banders experienced the same thing: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/topic/74766- ... no-snacks/
This page is written by a nutritionist: http://www.lap-band-surgery-site.com/di ... and-2.html

You could always seek a second opinion from another doctor or a nutritionist if you feel that such a strict rule just won't work for you.
