CAn't find the no sugar pizza sauce

Postby meandher on Wed Oct 21, 2009 2:19 pm

What brand and where do you find the no or very low sugar pizza sauce. Planning to cook the "meat crust pizza" tonight and so far unable to find the sauce I need. I did find a 1Gram sugar spagetti sauce and may just use it. The spagetti sauce is Kroger traditianal sauce. What spices should I add to spagetti sauce to get it a little more like pizza sauce?

thanks

Since you mentioned grams of sugar, it sounds like you are looking at the nutritional label. You only need to look at the ingredients and make sure there's no added sugar (in any form - sugar, cane juice, corn syrup, etc.) You'd want to look out for other bad ingredients too but with tomato sauce sugar is the main one you'd be likely to find. Tomatoes have natural sugar in them, which is fine and a source of good carbs, so there's really no "no sugar" tomato sauce - just "no sugar added".

We use the Kroger brand pizza sauce. (either the traditional or pizza parlor styles) It tastes like pizza sauce without adding anything to it, but you can always add a little more oregano or basil or both if you like those spices. Had it last night with some whole wheat boboli crusts and lots of veggies for toppings! ;) Adding a side salad and some protein is a good idea to create a fully balanced SB meal though.

FWIW, the spaghetti sauces we use all have more grams of sugar than that, but no added sugars either. Since we don't count grams of carbohydrates/sugars, that number is relatively meaningless if the sugars are all coming from SB friendly ingredients. A cup of milk has 15-18 gms of sugar and we should be having 2 cups of that daily in P1 and 2-3 cups of dairy in P2. It's the source of the carbs/sugars and the ingredients that predominate our thinking on SB, not necessarily the nutritional panel, although that provides additional helpful supplementary information as well.

Hi ,
In my area I couldn't find any red sauce (either pizza or spagetti) without added sugar.
Any suggestion how to make it in a simple way from normal just canned tomato paste?

Sorry if that was a repeated question.

Thank you all for the great help and support in these forums.

You can try this easy recipe:
Pizza Sauce - P1
1 large 15-ounce can tomato puree (no added sugar)
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 tablespoons Italian Seasoning (oregano, basil, thyme)
2 teaspoons salt (optional)
3 tablespoons Splenda or to taste
2 teaspoons garlic powder (not salt)
Whole wheat crust (homemade - see files for recipe), store-bought or from pizza store
2 cups chopped vegetables
2 cups lean meat of choice (or don't use meat and increase cheese amount to 2 cups)
1 cup shredded 2% cheese (don't use fat-free, doesn't melt)

Mix first 5 ingredients in saucepan and heat.

Using whole-wheat crust, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder.
Top with sauce. Evenly spread over sauce the chopped vegetables (onions, green peppers, olives, etc.) and meat (grilled chicken cut into 1/4-inch cubes, crumbled very lean hamburger, etc.).
Top with light topping of shredded 2% cheese.
This is just to hold the toppings on (about 1 cup grated for a 10-inch pizza).

Also FWIW, the Classico brand makes a number of prepared spagetti sauces that comply. Their plain Tomato and Basil is always a safe choice and should be available nationally at most major grocery outlets.

Dear Ami, RedRox and Magna,
Thank you so much for the help
Thank you Ami for the recipe, will try it and let you know the results :) , it looks so nice.

And yes, this doesn't exist in Cairo, unfortunately a lot of brands and foods that are used in these great forums are not available in Egypt at all.

Good luck & Have a lovely day
