I'm a food snob pretty much everywhere I go! ;) I try not to be, but just can't help it really. My name is Red and I'm a food snob...

Had a lovely spring break trip on a cruise around the Hawaiin islands. Nothing like combining a vacation and all you can eat buffets to bring out the worst in people. If we had the time, preferred to eat in the sit-down restaurants for breakfast, but if we wanted to get off ship and get our day going more quickly, suffered through the breakfast buffet lines. Quantities and choices of food were truly mind-boggling. Overhead a Mom talking to her son passing a table getting ready to dig in, "Honey, are you really going to eat 7 sausages?!?" Oy...

People in my office go out EVERYDAY!! There is a really yummy pizzeria close and everyones always ordering calzones, pizza, subs etc etc. I should take a picture of our fridge. You could pick my lunch out in a heartbeat! It's pretty much the only thing NOT in a takeout box.

I usually make my lunch everyday and bring it with me. Occasionally I'll go to the Fruit Center down the street for a salad.

But I'm saving money and gas so that's good!!

I switched jobs recently, but it was like that at my old job. Everybody was overweight, I was by far the smallest and at 5 foot 8 and 199lbs, that'll give you an idea. I was also the oldest and the only one who ever got any exercise. I was so tired of the rest of them poking fun at my food, while they stuffed their faces with disgusting crap and between bites complained about their weight. Give me a freaking break.

Now I have gone in the other direction. I work for a chiropractor who's a real health fanatic ~ he's in super shape and eats SO healthy. It's nice to have support

i love that i found this chat. I work in an office where one member is diabetic, one is pre diabetic and the others are all a bit on the chunky side, including myself. Until now i haven't really focused on eating well, with a lot of stress in my life it was hard, but now that i'm finally getting settled i'm ready to buckle down. Unfortunately the rest of em eat out everyday and routinely snack on chocolate, chips and starbucks! Its gonna be hard, but i think i can do it!! Oh, and when i was on plan, i was a total cart snob. I couldn't help but think...if only you didn't eat that crap. But unfortunately after going back the other direction and sliding down the slope, i'm ready to start the climb back toward health!

I keep thinking about how much I used to go out to eat in general and what I used to get. I really can't see myself ever going back to that.

Also about office snacking. The girl on the other side of me has this HUGE dish of candy all the time. I used to walk by steal and candy like 5 times a day for real! I really need to find a healthy snack to be like hah look at me I'm healthy.

Michael Pollan on grocery stores, Farm bill vs Food Bill

Postby Better than Yesterday » Wed Apr 25, 2007 2:43 pm

Another great read from someone who knows so much about the American diet and how we got where we are and the story behind our stories.

He's talking about so many of the issues raised in the post.

I actually used to always be embarassed by my cart of processed and unhealthy foods.. I always knew it was wrong and a poor decision but at the time we couldn't afford better food (for instance, this weeks shopping trip was over DOUBLE our previous grocery bill, healthy food is EXPENSIVE). Once again I think I'm my own hardest critic.. when I'm piling all those veggies and lean meats onto the conveyor at the check-out though I felt so good, like I didn't want to throw a blanket over and hide my food cart!

DH and I went shopping last night, for the first time (together) since I joined the beach almost 3 weeks ago... I was aware for the first time just how much stuff there is out there that is SO bad for us! Aisle after aisle after aisle of junk... how sad.

And the COST of eating healthy... I don't really understand how it can be more expensive to pick some veggies, package them and ship them than it is to take food (I am asasuming that some of that junk actually starts out as food), process the heck out of it, turn it into "quick and easy", THEN package and ship it... Doesn't make sense.

Personally, I LOVE to hit the farmers markets for stuff I don't grow on my own. I am lucky that we have enough land for a pretty good-sized garden, and our own chickens. Any pork or beef we get is raised by friends, and there is almost always lean venison in our freezer. So I am hoping that my grocerry bill will go down when things start growing around here!
1st goal MET!!!
2nd goal underway...

It's because the farms that mass produce the crops to be refined, etc are subsidized by the Government. Where as the farms that produce crops to be sent straight to the Grocer and consumer, or organic food farms, are not supported by the Government.

the best way to encourage people You love to use SB is to use it yourself and when the weight comes off people will ask You what you are doing...and THEN You tell them.
my daughter lost 15 pounds
my son lost 40
my daughter in law lost 10 (but she was so close to healthy)
my husband lost 10
and i lost 35.
SB rocks!

Most will still look at you like you just landed from Mars and provide a littany of excuses of why they could never do SB though. Truly happens everytime I mention it by name. Eating healthy foods and exercise is met with only marginally better acceptance. YMMV.

Glad that you were able to get through to the rest of your family though! :D

i recently read an article in "eating well" magazine about healthiest workplaces around the country. some places [google] have outstanding healthy options, but there were some smaller scale things that were cool too - one place always kept a supply of fresh fruit and nuts at their reception desk instead of the ubiqitous candy dish. i think i'm going to take it upon myself to bring in apples, oranges and bananas [the cheap fruit!] and some almonds or pistachios to the office ... should counteract the candy bowl on the other side of the wall where i'll put it.
