How come we seem to put on weight so easily?

Postby Socorro » Wed Jul 12, 2006 1:57 pm

I don't know, from reading some of the posts and my personal experience, it seems that some of us can mess up for a little while, maybe 2 weeks, but not consistently every day, and already we are putting on extra pounds.

I am just venting I guess, but I find it so ANNOYING!!! I get sometimes so tired of watching every little thing!

I lost a lot weight from my last pregnancy were I gained a lot of weight and not by eating tremendously either, to about 206 lbs. I was like 138 or something.... I have lost up to 148. Some of it came off naturally (pregnancy weight) and some with the help of the South Beach diet.

One thing I haven't done is exercise. I know I need to, especially now.

My weight has been flunctuating between 151 to 154 today! Don't know why. I have been actually been more watchful and careful than ever.

What could it be? I know I need to exercise, but why this weight flunctuation?

I too am a slave to my scale. I can get on and off it 100 times a day. I love to play with the numbers.

that being said I ONLY count the monday morning weigh in. you're weight will fluctuate daily, hourly even...

I don't weight myself every day but sometimes I forget which day I weight myself and would probably do it again like 3 days later...

I will try to do this like every Sunday morning or Monday morning and keep track of it that way.

thanks for the reply.

It seems like an eternity to get to my goal!!!

I REALLY need to start exercising and that would probably be brisk walking for 6 days a week. One of the things that forces me to do this is that I see myself gaining some weight and I don't want to have to get any higher than what I am right now.

How old is your baby? When mine were little, I would put them in a stroller and take them for a walk for about an hour almost every day. It was fabulous: they got a nap (and with my oldest, that was just about the ONLY way to get him to nap!), I got some exercise, and I lost all my pregnancy weight and then some by the time each of them was 8 months old!

Of course, this is trickier to manage when they get too old to want to stay in the stroller for that long, or when there are older ones to schedule around...

Hi! :D My youngest she is 2 1/2 yrs old and FULL of energy. That's what I was doing for a while, walking and pushing her stroller at a brisk pace (and boy was I feeling it! ), but I live in Florida and the weather has been keeping me from being outside everyday. I need an indoor exercise as well to do while the weather gets more stable.

Walking briskly is by far the exercise I like the most and one I can stick with.

I will go out today again weather permitting...

Thanks for the reply! :)

Were any of you nursing? Did this help you lose weight also? My daughter is 6 weeks old and because of SB I am 10 lighter than my prepregnacy weight (though, lots more to go). I'm just afraid that with this weight loss, I my milk supply will go down too. Anyone deal with that?

I'm also curious how doing SB will affect, if at all, my nursing my son (he's 2 weeks tomorrow). I definitely think it'll help w/weight loss (it did with my other two, but wasn't doing SB then), but I'm trying to make sure I consume enough calories to keep up with what I'm "donating" to him! Actually I'm not sure how many calories I'm consuming, I just make sure I don't ever feel hungry for too long.

I wish I could tell you, but I wasn't on this diet when I was nursing....

However, I would be cautious taking Splenda and nursing... Ask your doctor first.

Loosing weight whould not affect the supply of milk, but make sure you drink plenty of fluids and eat well.

South Beach is a well balanced diet so it shouldn't be a problem in getting the nutrients that you need to produce good milk.

Good luck with the nursing and congrats!

Oh, heavens, yes! I wasn't doing SB then, but I used to say that nursing was like liposuction - literally, because the baby was sucking fat out of me! I still had to eat reasonably well and exercise, but I've never lost weight that easily in my life. It came off consistently at the rate of about 5 pounds a month as long as I was exclusively breastfeeding and eating/exercising well.

For supply issues, the big things are to make sure that you're drinking enough water and getting adequate nutrition, particularly calcium. If you have supply problems, fenugreek is an herbal supplement that helps a lot, and oatmeal helps too.

I was the opposite! Lost most of my weight during childbirth (all 3 kids were over 9 lbs) and held on to the last 7-8 pounds during the entire time I nursed (nursed each kid for a year). As soon as I weaned them - I lost 7-8 pounds within the week!

Now I've got the 40+ metabolism going on :( and I'd LOVE to get down to the weight that I was when my third child turned 1. How depressing is that! I started gaining weight 3+ years ago and now it won't budge. I've been doing SB since March and have only lost 6 lbs. Luckily, I feel so healthy and energetic that I refuse to quit this WOE but it sure would be nice to see a little weight loss!

As a former LaLeche League mother...as long as you are drinking your fluids and letting the baby nurse when he wants to your milk supply will be fine. The baby puts a demand on your body to make the amount of milk that he needs. Every 6 weeks or so he will go through a growth spurt and seem to be nursing every hour for about 24 hours or so, this is normal. This is how you body starts producing more volume for his new demands. Sometimes a growth spurt lasts for 1 day and sometimes 2 or 3 then they will be fine until the next time maybe 2 months later.

You are right on it!! you have stalled... you are not burning calories like you should be and that will cause you to stall.

That happened to me when I was doing Atkins - I never did anything about it (exercising) - eventually got off Atkins and now I am here a year later with 15 lbs on my back... i have been reading all these different diets and why this and why that and bottom line is you have to burn calories and only way to do that is exercise.

Now of course I sit here Knowing this and yet not exercising.. Where is the logic in that?

Maybe we can just start out with 10 minutes a day???

I'm all ears if you have an idea!!
just trying to get back to the weight I said I never would be...
