Sugar substitutes don't agree with me!

Postby ginnydew » Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:24 pm

Does anyone have a suggestion that can be used for recipes that call for sugar substitutes? My digestive system does not like them.

Hi, ginnydew. My whole body does not like artificial sweeteners! I occasionally use agave nectar, but, in general, I do without. I'm trying to get away from wanting and eating sweetened foods, they are not in my best interest. I'm a firm believer that artificial sweeteners don't do a body good. I eat fruit for my dessert without added sweetener. I did myself in last time I was on SBD eating sugar alcohols in candy and synthetic honey. I lost 50 lbs., but looked terrible. My family kept telling me to gain back some weight! I was pale, my skin had a gray cast, and I didn't feel well. I eat organic most of the time now, and artificial sweeteners are, in my opinion, just chemicals passing for food. (I hope I don't get boo'ed off this forum, I like it here!)
What to use instead of sugar substitutes? There isn't much available besides agave nectar, Stevia and Xylitol, which can cause internal upsets like sugar alcohols. Personally, I don't care much for the flavor of Stevia, altho NOW Foods has a liquid Stevia that isn't too bad, you might be able to buy it at a healthfood store. You might be better off using a small amount of sugar. For years, I did all my baking with Sucanat, an natural organic dehydrated cane juice that I buy at Whole Foods. It has a more intense flavor than regular sugar, so a much smaller amount can be used to get good flavor. It tastes more like brown sugar than white. Now, I do most of my baking for my husband with agave nectar, altho I do still bake with Sucanat, not all baking can take a liquid sweetener like agave. Check out my The Best Ever Almond Agave cookies in the recipe section. They are sooo good!
Good luck!

I forgot about fructose. It is supposed to be the lowest G.I. sugar. Years ago I worked in healthfood stores, and back then, much of fructose was made from corn. I don't know if it still is or not. You might try fructose...
