Is it OK to take a protein powder/shake on the south beach diet? I was taking a protein powder after I worked out but I stopped taking it once I started SB - it has 10 carbs in it and 7 of those carbs are sugar. Is this a no-no in Phase 1?

You'll be better of making your own shake and using Splenda for sweetener. It's OK to have a shake after working out, or for convenience when you can't have a regular meal, but not to replace a meal.

Thanks Ami! I am really hesitant to take the protein powder because of the high sugar content. However, I feel they make a difference after a workout. So far I have stayed away from them - I have one more week on Phase 1, maybe then I will go back to them?? Thanks again!

Some protein powders are OK - mostly whey protein and maybe some other nutrients. They're OK if you need them. But others, as you have learned, are sweetened with sugar or have other bad ingredients so it's best to avoid them.

Find the whey protein powder than comes unsweetened and you add your own sweetener like Splenda. Again, just have them when you really need them.

Hello! I was wondering, are Glucerna Hunger Smart Shakes ok to have for breakfast on phase 1 of the SBD? They are designed to minimize blood sugar spikes and when I drank them for breakfast before starting the SBD, I was very satisfied for a good 2 hours or so afterwards. They have what's called "Carb Steady" which includes slowly digestible carbs and only has 6g of sugar, plus 15g of protein! *Fingers crossed*
