How about Whole grain cereals in P2?

Postby allmydietsays on Fri Oct 30, 2009 2:15 am

Hi,
I would like to know if I can add whole-grain cereals ,at least once a week for breakfast in my P2 diet?
FYI: this is my 3rd week in P2.

Thanks

Yes of course. Doesn't even have to be just once a week. It can be one of your daily servings of starches. There are guidelines for cold and hot cereals listed in the P2 foods to add list linked into the P2 FAQ sticky topic and an older/better list of recommended brands/types in another link also in the P2 FAQ sticky topic. Enjoy!

allmydietsays - I like cereal because it is quick and easy and I have 2 kids at home. I usually eat whole wheat cheerios and I sprinkle fiber 1 on top (because I can't eat a whole bowl of it). I have has this probably every 2nd day or so in phase 2 and it seems to work so you may want to give it a try!

There's no such thing as "whole wheat cheerios" that I can see. There is Multi-grain Cheerios--maybe that's what you mean. Multi-grain doesn't mean SB-friendly. It only means that there is more than one type of grain present. We are looking for certain types of whole grains.

It so happens that Multi-grain Cheerios contains whole grains, but a lot of it is corn and rice, which aren't good cereal choices for SB. Also, if you look at the cereal guidelines in the food list, it doesn't contain enough fiber. Cheerios are also puffed, which raises the glycemic index. So it's best to use the list rather than falling prey to marketing gimmicks.

In the Good Fats/Good CarbsGuide, Cheerios is a "limited" food in phase 2. With added fiber, I think it would be OK. That said, you could do better. It's the kind of cereal I might choose if I had to pick something from a breakfast buffet, but I wouldn't buy it and eat it regularly.

Sorry about the confusion with the cheerios....it is the regular cheerios and in response to the sugar thing...it only has 1g of sugar, 2g of fiber and 20 g carbs in it so that is why I chose it. If you looked at the rest of my message I also add fiber 1 on top of it to increase the fiber. It has 14g fiber, 24 g carbs and 0g sugars. I am not entirely sure if that falls under "SB" friendly but Iit worked for me and I enjoyed the taste!

I'm not sure what you're referring to. No one mentioned sugar until you did. :?

Yes, you did say that you add Fiber One to it (a sprinkling), but it looked like the main point of the post was to recommend Cheerios, which isn't a good choice, no matter which variety it is. We just have an obligation to point such things out. It isn't anything personal. The fact is that it only has 2g of fiber. That is way too low.

Just to follow up on this a little, a post on the boards here is different from a private conversation or exchange of emails, because there are a lot of people who will read the post without posting anything in response. People will often post a comment that's mainly for the benefit of anyone who may be reading.
