I'm on the pill(have been since I was 12, I have ovarian cysts) and only when I started losing weight and eating healthy did I either NOT have a period or would have one, then Spot at random times during the month. I have a huge fear of pregnancy(I'm really too young and just starting my career, so I wouldn't be able to care for a kid properly) so I always do a pregnancy test, even though I use back up methods(condoms & spermicide).

Anyway, when I asked my OBGYN, she said that when you lose weight your body is still producing just as many hormones as when you were heavier, and it takes a while for your body to adjust to your new weight(a few months).

Hope that helps some :)

I'm so glad I read this. I'm on the pill and got my period 6 days early and have had cramps. This explains a lot: I lost 13 lbs on Phase 1 and 2 since then. Thanks, ladies! Fortunately I am going to the gyn. next Tuesday anyway, so I can get her expert advice. I'll be sure to post if she says anything relevant to you all.

outpatient procedure

Postby bobbielou » Sat Jan 29, 2005 2:21 pm

I will definitely do that since I wont be leaving the house after the outpatient procedure for a couple of days - not supposed to walk around much or lift, etc I guess - my house has about 20 stairs ! I will be on my laptop - so will be posting. I too think it is the diet because why would others be having these symptoms too - the dr said no one he knows that is on a low carb low fat diet has mentioned this to him and he thinks there would be a lot of complaints! I guess I will have the procedure done even though I dont think it is necessary - wonder if I will have a period next month then? I am staying on the diet til I lose this weight I told him.

Thanks for the good thoughts -

I'm glad I'm not the only one with perplexing periods. I too, am on the pill. I started SB on Jan 10, and during phase 1, started about a week early, and now, I'm in phase 2, still losing, but my period seems like it's trying to start back up again, and that's 9 days early... I still have 9 pills left before I take the placebos. This is so annoying. I don't want to have 2 periods in one month! This sucks! Siiigh... I really do hope things balance out in the next few months. I hope this doesn't go on forever until I reach my ideal weight. I wonder if it will keep happening as long as I keep losing weight, or if it will chill out now that I'm only losing a more gradual 1.5 lbs a week now. Ug!

period changes

Postby bobbielou » Tue Feb 01, 2005 1:42 am

Seems like low fat diets DO cause period problems! Even though I asked my GYN and he said they should not - well then why did I get a period after 4 years since I started the diet - as far as straightening out I wont know I guess for another month - I dont want them to start up again but at least that will prove that it is aregular period -- I am having the D&C procedure my dr wants done hopefully to prove my point only it is a result of the diet thats all.....go in next friday - wish me luck.

I had a much heavier period than normal, but I had attributed it to having had a baby recently. Now that I read this thread, it seems much more likely to have to do with the diet (especially because I've had many periods since the baby and this last one was way heavier - I relate to whoever talked about bleeding through clothing- talk about feeling like you're 12 again!!) It's absolutely amazing that women who haven't had a period in years are experiencing this. I'd love to know the reasons for that! Thanks for sharing your experiences - what a great resource this forum is.

would like to know why Dr. A is not addressing this at all - especially since so many are having this happen? Just curious - when reg drs say it should not be happening just because of a low fat diet!

I am continuing on the diet but sure would like to know if it will stop again if I get off low fat??? I am going ahead with the D&C next week but still think is caused by this.

hello....I started this WOE on Jan. 3rd and have been doing really good. I also got my period about 12 days early, which made me very nervous since I am always regular. I went to the OBGYN this morning and he told me that YES, dieting can cause you to have an irregular period. I was relieved. Everthing checked out well with the exam.

My doctor said the same thing: I was early because of the diet. Phew!

Both my regular doctor & OBGYN have told me it was because of diet. Maybe your doctor isn't up to speed on it???

dr.

Postby bobbielou » Tue Feb 08, 2005 11:37 pm

true but he is concerned because of I am supposedly POST Menopausal...most of the ladies on here are child bearing age and still having periods - which I know when I was yes diet can cause fluctuations in periods. I guess better safe than sorry. I did tell him others have the problem and he said if a LOW FAT caused bleeding there would be a LOT of women in the drs office - makes sense - unless they are not telling their drs..

From The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

"Stress, various types of strenuous exercise, and diet can affect the onset of menstruation and the regularity of the menstrual cycle."

It just doesn't say why...but I found this at another site

"Weight-loss may temporarily affect the menstrual cycle patterns; ovulation, however, is not interrupted. This cycle is usually corrected within a few months, as body metabolism adjusts."

Since you are Post Menopausal, I'm not sure if this applies
