Some (Almost) Middle Aged Guy Pics - Updated 3/25/07

Postby PapaBanucci » Sat Jun 17, 2006 7:10 am

Finally posted a "before" on March 25, 2007.

OK, here's my before...

After way too long, I'm finally posting it.

Image

And that was actually 3 months after being on SBD.

And here's an after.

Image

And thus continues my original post...

Since fall 2004, I've lost more than 25 pounds of fat and have picked up somewhere between 5 and 10 lbs of lean body mass. For nine months now, I've been eating Phase 3, doing weights 3 times a week, running 4 or 5 times a week. I've skipped two workouts in nine months and I think my consistency and my daily journal is what I'm most proud of. It's what you do in the valleys that matters. The peaks are easy.

Taking this picture makes me wonder if maybe I can throw out all those 36" trousers.

Some quick numbers:
- Age: 38
- Height: 5' 10"
- Weight: 166 lbs.
- Body Fat: 14% :D
- Chest: 42.5"
- Waist: 32.0"
- Hips: 37.75"
- Blood Pressure: 110/70
- Resting Heart Rate: 45 (yeah, that's right...)
- Cholesterol: Proof that diet and exercise alone aren't enough as I just found out a couple months ago. :( I started taking niacin and have stopped using eggs for protein. I need to get retested.
- Lowest my Tanita Scale has ever said for Metabolic Age: 20 :D (exercise to rev up metabolism is key for me)

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.

Not a single real standing-solo "before" pic. I managed to be the one who took the pictures during those years. In the group pictures, I picked my spot in the group more "strategically." Anyhow, I don't feel right about posting a group photo.

I lifted weights one summer in high school and then about six months in my early thirties. So not much really. Now with nine consistent months down, this is the longest run ever. We'll see, but I'm optimistic...

On the cardio side, I've turned into a runner. I never once ran over 3 miles before a year ago. Now my "short runs" are 3 to 4 miles and my long runs as long as ten miles and more. And I now love to run - mostly for the wonderful peace of mind it creates.

As far as whether or not I worked out before the weight loss - not at all. In contrast I didn't really start working out seriously until after the weight loss. (I don't necessarily recommend the "hard way" which I followed.)

I transitioned to more serious workouts as part of my maintenance strategy.

According to the research of the National Weight Control Registry:

We could identify few commonly shared features of how these people lost weight. The only common characteristic was that 89% of registry participants used both diet and physical activity to lose weight: only 10% used diet alone, and 1% used exercise alone.

http://xnet.kp.org/permanentejournal/sum03/registry.html

With high-intensity cardio and weight training, I've dropped about another close to 10 lbs. of fat and added another more than 5 lbs. of muscle. Only about a net 4 lbs. weight loss. However, that change dropped another two inches off my waist, but more importantly, it helps me maintain.

With the diet and low-intensity cardio only, I could consume about 2,500 calories a day to maintain.

With high-intensity cardio and good weight training techniques and the resulting reduced body fat, increased muscle, and much higher metabolism, I now target 3,300 calories a day.

I believe this is what I have to do to maintain, sustain, and succeed. Besides, it feels so good to feel alive and full of energy.

(However actually if you look at the number another way, I'm still a sedentary couch potato roughly 23 hours a day!) :D

rut-roh..... Middle age is halfway done. I'm truly middle aged. 38 is not quite there.... would make you a mere 76 when your done your time here. but i'm older. if I live to be 92 then I'm middle aged. if i live longer than I'm not.

either way he's not 20something, and he looks FAB-U-LOUS

Thanks everybody.

Unfortunately I don't have the best genes and I can't count on living until 92. When I go through those life expectancy calculators that consider family risk factors, lifestyle choices, etc., I typically get an answer of 77 or so. Half of 77 is 38.5 and that was just a few months ago. :(

I have got to start living life to its fullest because it could be I've taken half the breaths I'll ever take!
