I am so confused. I am on day 7 of sbd. I have had a stomach ache all day and I didn't even want to eat. Later in the day I ran to Wal Mart to pick up some things........there was a whole isle on Atkins snacks. Are those allowed?
The whole "NET CARB" thing is really appealing, but I am confused on the fiber and sugar alcohol.
Does anyone know about this, or is anyone having the Atkins snacks? There are chocolate peanut butter bars with 2 grams of net carbs? It seems too good to be true.

No, the Atkins bars are NOT allowed in SBD. And why are you concerned with carbs? South Beach is NOT a low carb diet, so quit worrying about it. Eat all the good carbs you want, eat lots of veggies. And stay away from those processed foods. You either want to do SBD or Atkins. |

I thought that was a very rude reply. She was asking a legitimate question. This forum is here to help people, you didn't have to get smart. You could have answered her question without the lecture.
Angie, hang in there. I don't see why an Atkins snack once in a while would hurt .. I just wouldn't over indulge. |

Angie,
The first guest is right. Atkins bars are not allowed in any of the phases because they contain sugar. And as Dr. A says in his book, we dont' count carbs on this diet. I know it's tempting to do that, but resist. We just have to concentrate on the good carbs. If you're wanting sweets, I found some sugar-free Reese's peanut butter cups at Wal-Mart the other day. Course even with those, they have saturated fat.
Anyway, hope that helps. |

| I was wondering about the atkins items myself! shockwoman- Thanks for letting us know that it is possible to have them every now and then and still lose. Sometimes I just need some kind of sweets! Now that milk is allowed in P1, I sometimes mix white skim milk with a little bit of chocolate milk from the cafeteria just so that I can get rid of my chocolate cravings! I hope this doesn't affect my results too much because I'm sure chocolate milk has some sugar in it. |

| I forgot to tell you guys, I did not just decide to use the Atkins stuff, I was reading an interview on WebMD I do believe, anyway it was with DR. A, and he is the one that said that the Atkins stuff could be used in moderation....now there is not sugar in the bars, there is sugar alcohol which has a low GI....here is the down side, it can cause extreme gas, so if you notice that you get gassy one day after eating these things that is why, to me it is a small price to pay for chocolate!!!!! but I just eat them in the privacy of my own home!!!! lol |

Well Ladies, (shockwoman and stepherdee2)
Thank you for your kind reply. I didn't know you had to be a South Beach Expert to participate in this forum. I am TOTALLY a SBD fan and dieter. I am a "carb addict" and need a little sweet comfort on my bad days. I was just wondering if the Atkins bars were ok, since they are made with sugar alcohols...its better than having a whole ^*&()$% snickers. hee hee
GUEST........... I am not worried about carbs.......I simply asked what the deal was with the NET CARBS. Thanks for biting my head off and degrading my will power. I just wanted to gain knowledge of something I am unfamiliar with. I have a suggestion for you.....don't reply to anymore emails if you can't be empowering to your fellow South Beach friends. |

if you guys are looking for a chocolate fix you have got to try the warm brownie recipe. As far as I know it is OK for P1. It has been a lifesaver for me.
4T non fat dry milk
1T unsweetened cocoa
1T Natural Peanut BUtter
1 packet Splenda
Mix these together until crumbly and blended and then add a touch of skim milk until it is like the consistency of playdough. Microwave for 20 seconds...mmmmmmm delish!! |

Watch out! That warm brownie is addicting  I LOVE IT! I only buy the ingredients to make it around my TOM though because otherwise I think I could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner! Oh and to make it more like a pb cup I put the tablespoon of pb on top instead of mixed in. YUM.
On the atkins products... the "net carbs" thing is just stupid terminology to get people to think that what they are eating is healthy. Net carbs = carbs minus fiber which a lot of the time is just added fiber with no nutritional benefit. I heard recently that they are legally stopping the usage of this term because it gives people the wrong idea. I think they are now going to use Net Atkins Carbs or something like that. Not much better. Also the products are usually VERY high in saturated fat and calories. Everything in moderation, but the problem is that most would be using up the sweet treat calories (75 a day) in only a few bites!!
Also some people find sugar alcohols to be bad on their tummy. Many times they warn against stomach aches and diarrhea right on the product.
I had posted this to someone else when the carb counting thing came up:
The whole carb-counting craze was started with the Atkins diet- NOT a healthy way of losing weight. For instance all the low carb stuff you see in stores like ice cream, coffeemate or candy for example is loaded with bad fats and huge amounts of calories. I read an article in consumer reports about the atkins diet and those "low carb" products in the stores. I think atkins people are allowed 40 carbs or something depending on their phase (i have no clue about the diet) and by eating stuff like veggies, fruit, etc to get those 40 carbs you ingest about 150-200 calories. If you eat the low carb stuff, you could consume anywhere from 1100 to 2000 extra calories JUST from your 40 carb allowance!
Short story long- "low carb" stuff is not the way to go. Stick with the approved list of foods and you'll be good to go.
To each their own. As long as you're making an informed decision you can find out what's right for you. :D |

Yes, it does have sugar in it. But I do similar things. The way we are going to stick to this way of life and eating is to do it in a way that appeals to you. If 95% of your choices are adhering to SBD and you still want chocolate ... look at what you wrote - you are drinking mainly skim milk with a little flavoring and getting your chocolate kick. Compare that to what you were doing pre-SBD. Overall, your WOE is so much healthier. I doubt there are too many people who never fudge a little and look at all the weight that has been dropped and healther people walking around! :D
I say if it works for you and you are losing weight and feeling good, do it.

I guess you could use the Atkins products but why? You can make a homemade snack instead (Like those microwave choco/p-nut butter brownies!) . You would know what the ingrediants are at a fraction of the price.
Besides I'm suspect of a plan that encourages you to buy their food products to lose weight. They are expensive and not something you could reproduce at home (i.e. processed) |

I would suggest using them if you can do it in moderation.
I was on Atkins a while ago, before all the craze and millions of products appeared. I lost a lot of weight but then got tricked into the habit of using the atkins products. They may only have 2 carbs but they have hundreds of calories. And if you're allowed 40 carbs, and are eating all atkins products then you're going to be in trouble.
I like SB much better, because I can't be tempted into the atkins products aisle. |

| My father was on the Atkins plan for almost a year. He's almost 50 years old and was really in great shape. After a few months of the Atkin's plan he was constantly feeling run down and sick. He eventually developed an ulcer that very nearly killed him. His doctor was finally able to convince him that Atkin's plan was not a good idea, even if his family could not convince him. Us guys are stubborn like that. Well he has been eating SB style ever since, is in better shape than ever, happy as a clam, and we are very thankful to Dr. Agaston for sharing his 'food common sense'. I can't endorse ANYTHING that Atkins makes. Yes, call me bitter because I am. :P |
