FatinBoise

Tomorrow is day 1. I actually seem to have lost weight since Mom's death. I now weigh 185 instead of 190. I made the decision (forced by the fact my husband was at the Dr. appointment with me when she read me the riot act). We were catching meals as we could during my mothers last illness. Lots of hospital food, pizza and mac and cheese. Only cooked 4 times last month. A new record for me since puberty. I hope to improve my med numbers as well as my weight. My dad and brother will join me in the diet. I keep thinking of the way Mom and the other man in the ER looked when they coded. It seems that air is pumped into your belly and you look even larger than you do normally. It seems a shame she was only 65. Wish me luck.

Day one before breakfast. My mood is better. Think I'll make eggs without any bread. I don't own vegtable juice yet. It is sort of salty. 185 on day 1. I'm a little worried about phase 1 and whether my body will tolerate it OK. I've had some trouble with Atkins' and this seems similar. -- Fatin boise

 Day one has been hard. I haven't had cravings but I had several episodes of hypoglycemia where I felt shaky, confused and weak. I tried to wait through them for the protein or fat to work but it didn't. Finally a ate a little bit of apple and I felt like myself again. This happened twise. Its somewhat dangerous because it could happen while I am driving and that is scary. I must keep some carbs near me so I can treat this. It's after dinner and I can feel the confusion starting to kick in again. I have insulsin resistance and wonder if my body is expecting more carbs. I'll try a slightly modified version tomorrow with just enough complex carbs to stave off hypoglycmia/ Anyone have any better ideas?

:) When I read the forum again I realized I could have beans. I had one 1/2 cup of garbonzo beans and avoided more lows on day 1. Today I will have my beans with breakfast. I have to drive a lot and move an elderly aunt today. I will keep an apple or something. Hopefully I can avoid at least the simple carbs. Wish me luck

Today is day 3 :D . Yeasterday went much better. The beans really helped. I only had one mild hypoglycemic attact in a resturaunt. I hadn't been able to have my afternoon snack. I titrated with one little smarty while I waited for my food. I dropped 4 lbs so far (I know it's water weight. I think I just have to be careful with the hypoglycemia to make sure I don't get sick. I moved my 89 year old aunt into a alzeheimers unit and it took longer then I thought. Hence the lack of snack. Hopefully today will go as well.

I'm onto day 4. Today was good but I did end up at a mexican resturaunt. I thought I ordered well but weight up a bit. Could be the salt. No sugar lows. My blood pressure is back to the normal range (with meds) :D . I'm going away this weekend to a vegitarian religious retreat. Hopefully, it won't be to dreadful on my diet. We aren't vegitarians but our synagouge is renting a vegitarian camp. We have to get out of town. I think the change of scenery will help us deal with Mom's death better. 2 days in the mountains on the lake can't hurt.

Day 5, Today is trip day so I will start phase 2. I sort of have to eat what is available this weekend. Will decide wether to stay in phase 2 or restart phase 1 on Monday. If I have no weight gain I might just stay in phase 2. Had sushi lunch so already am in phase 2 but felt I might need the energy while I drive. It would do me no good to die in a car accident to maintain a diet. Tell you how the trip and diet went on Monday. My blood pressure has been very normal since I started the diet. We are back from the retreat. I was careful about what I ate but can't say I was dieting. I noticed I seemed much more sensitive to the one smore I had. Had to take a med that might have thrown my sugar anyway. I got on the scale and didn't seem to do any damage. Dad and I are going to go try phase 2 for a while and see if we seem happy there. If I have problems I will go back to phase 1. Gee, the carbs did taste good and I was pretty good about my choices. Now back to the old grind. --

There is a good post going right now, I cant remember which forum its on, but they have been talking about low blood sugar and hypoglycemia! I think the main theme was be prepared and have extra snacks around!

You sound like your doing great! Keep up the good work!

The second day i was on P1 had low sugars Im on insulin. I found cottage cheese was something that brought them back up. I have been on P2 over a month and Im not taking my day insuling at all just the lantis that goes for 24 hours. But a couple nights let sugar get too low and then I eat non stop for 20 minutes it is a horrible feeling. Have not had as much trouble on P2 but after got meds regulated for sugar now having trouble with low blood preassure. So now starting to decrease the
medicines for that. I have found I do better with just certain carbs. Some fruits make me want more. The book explains things I should have known 14 years ago. I am so happy I have started this diet my body is handling all things better. I had a lot of water retension probably 30 pounds at times now very little if any.
Keep up the experimenting till you find what is right for you.

:) Thanks for the comments about the sugar. I'm beginning to wonder how low it's going. It may just be dropping  . I now have a glucometer and have found my sugars are running high (like when I was pregnant). I'm not pregnant. I think my body is trying to convert to type 2 diabetes. My fasting sugars are about 130 :( . My 2 hour sugars a in a prediabetes state too. The meds for the hives might have increased the sugars. One can only hope. IT felt like hypoglycemia and it probably was. The confusion is a big key. Today I am back on the diet again. Going to add one complex carb per meal. Either fruit or whole wheat bread (which I will bake later today). I need to go to the store and get more healthy supplies. My kids are being so supportive. I think Mom's death scared them too and they want me around for a long time :D . I want to watch them for a long time. I also wore my jeans on the retreat (something I couldn't do for over a year). They weren't even tight!!! I still weigh 182 which is 10 lbs less then when Mom died and 5 lbs less then when I started the diet. I've got to take time for me now so that I can help the others in my life. It's sort of neat being on the diet with my Dad. - Fat in boise

Phase 2 seems easier. I have more energy. I'm going to try to add one low glycemic carb per meals. The food hold me much better. Hopefully, I will continue to lose weight. I didn't really have cravings on phase 1 but I felt awful for the first couple of days. Perhaps if I had always eaten this carefully I wouldn't be fat. Sugar seems to be in better control.

Some medicines can affect sugars. lets hope if you have moved on to type 2 that it can be controlled with what you eat. You probably had low sugars when you felt what you felt. They can fluctuate up and down.
Staying away from high gl foods does help keep from having big fluctuations. There are other things that effect sugar like sickness, excercise, so it could do anything.

Got through another day. Making stuffed peppers with beef/turkey and brown rice. I wish the rice didn't take so long to cook. I like it when people write in on the journal. I figured out how to make a profile .
