Just started Ph I Monday and am loving SBD -- I can't believe my home scale said I'm down 6 pounds -- will have to check on gym scale tomorrow just to be sure. :?
Question: I work out regularly in the a.m. but find during/after exercise I am exhausted/light headed with not as much energy as usual. Is this typical? I drink tons of water during the day and believe I am eating enough protein, etc. -- actually following the menus/recipes recommended in the book.
Anyone have the same experience? |

| lori - your body is prob reacting to the factthat there are no carbs in your system to give you enegrgy to get through your workout. you may want to consider doing a 'modified' SBD - meaning you would have a small amt of carbohydrates before you go to workout, so that you have enough energy to finish your workout...if you don't have the energry to complete the workout strong, then you aren't reaping the benefits as much as you normally would. I would ask caylynn - she is a fitness instructor and could prob fill you in on what she did to modify her diet so she had the energy to complete her workout successfully. |

During Phase 1 I had absolutely no energy for exercise. This was a real problem, as I teach group fitness (aerobics) and I needed the energy for my classes.
So, I modified phase 1 a bit. An hour before my classes, I had some sort of healthy carbs. I'd have an apple with natural peanut butter or yogourt, or a Luna bar. Those snacks gave me enough energy to make it through my workouts, but did not cause me to have any cravings or hunger pains.
You may have to experiment with what foods work for you pre-workout. Some people have had good luck consuming legumes/beans every day for energy, but that never worked for me.
Good luck! |

WOW!! I'm so glad I read your posts!! I have been on the SBD for a little over a week now and going to the gym 3x a week...doing 30 minutes of cardio and weights for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. I usually go early in the morning, then come home and eat breakfast. I have been experiencing such muscle fatigue while working out. I was beginning to think I was doing something wrong with the diet program. It has been interesting to read these and several other posts...my husband and I are both on the SBD and it seems we have been way too strict!! I have made sure we have gone "by the book" and the last day have felt like giving up cuz we haven't lost any weight!! How long before any of you began to see a difference?? Is it different for everybody?? Do some people not lose 8-12 pounds during phase 1?? It looks like I need to add a few carbs in the morning before my workout!!
Thanks for your posts!! They are a great support!! |

ME2,
My experience was similar to yours. I went strictly by the book! When working out, I felt weaker than ever! Before meals, I was hungrier than ever! After week 1 of phase I, I have GAINED two pounds! |

Your weight loss in Phase 1 will depend on a lot of things: how much weight you have to lose, what your diet was like before SBD, how active you are, etc.
My husband and I both lost at about a rate of 1-2 lbs per week, both in Phase 1 and Phase 2 (we're now on Phase 3, and I'm still losing slowly!) I only had about 12 lbs I wanted to lose originally, and hubby had about 20. I'm now below my goal weight, and hubby's a few pounds away from his.
I did notice my belly shrinking after the first week of Phase 1, even though I only lost about 2 lbs on the scale. I had a round little belly before SBD, part of it from bloating, I'm sure, and it went down pretty quickly.
I wrote more about my experiences here: http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7963
Since that post, I've gone down to 134 lbs. I really don't want to lose any more weight at this point, although I would like to gain some muscle. :) |

I also work at an exercise center (cardiac rehab) and had problems keeping up with the 60 year old patients (I'm 53, ha ha) when I started SB 8 months ago. Before, even tho' I was overweight, I had no problems with the energy. I found that breakfast was important as well as fresh fruit for a pick-me up during the day. I found it necessary to modify the first phase a tad by adding an orange or banana mid morning. That seemed to work for me. Now that I am into phase 3, I add a piece of whole wheat bread to my morning poached eggs. My lunch staple has been salad with either lean ham, turkey, chicken or tuna and a serving of sugar free jello.
I may not have lost the weight as fast as someone else, but I did go from 195 to 150 in 8 months on a 5'4" frame.
I also felt that the sugar free jello was lacking something. Since I need to take metamucil (generic) 3 times a day anyway for another problem, I have my wife mix my lunch dose in my Jello when she makes it. The fiber gives it substance and it feels more like food than solidified water.
Good luck. Eventually, your energy will come back. Your body is in a state of rebellion and wants you to cave in. Show it who's smarter!

I also found it very hard to work out on P1. I am doing a training program for a half marathon, and the first week on P1 I couldn't get up the energy to run, and when I finally did, I had to stop after 2 miles (goal of 3 that day) because I was dizzy, and oddly enough, my heart was pounding.
However....
It's gotten a lot easier now that I'm on my 12th day. I am running faster and with more energy. I usually run right after breakfast on the weekends or after dinner during the workweek.
I didn't worry too much about not working out the first week or two, because I was losing weight anyways, and I knew that I could resume working out when I needed to.
By the way, I was running 3-6 miles almost every day before I started SBD. I actually gained fat (not muscle, trust me!) because doing that was just not enough. |

| Thanks Caylynn and Kinkid for your advice -- will try some fruit or a Luna Bar. I guess trying to be really strict with carbs is not the way to go if we're working out regularly. |

Thanks. :) I've lost about 4 pounds since the wedding. I really don't want to lose any more, because I know from past experience when I get too thin, I have no energy at all. Height-wise, I'm 5'6", but I'm large-framed and carry quite a bit of muscle, so I'll never be a "skinny minnie" which is fine by me, because I'd rather be fit, and carry some muscle, than be thin and have no energy to exercise. :) |

Caylynn ~
During my workouts I find that my muscles seem to tire more easily...I start getting that burn way to early in my routines. I tried eating some carbs before the workout and it helped a little with the tiredness but I seem to get that muscle burn too quickly after I begin. Is there something I can do to help with that??
Thanks

I'm no expert on this topic, but from what little I've read, you may also need to include a higher GI food after working out too to help your muscles rebuild themselves. Maybe your muscle soreness in a current workout is because they haven't fully recovered from a previous workout. Also do you vary your muscle group workouts? Or just do the same circuit/same muscle groups with a day of rest in between? Maybe there is something you can do to vary which muscle groups you are working in any particular workout, to give your other muscle groups more of a chance to recover before you work them again?
Here's an article I found on "the muscle recovery window". Don't know it this helps or not.

Thanks to Caylynn and Jim for the info. I seem to be at a plateau...not able to drop even a couple of pounds. I realize there are many factors involved beside the diet & exercise. I am 40+ and seem to lose weigh better when I'm not concentrating on it so much!! I'm 5'3'' and weigh 120 lbs...I guess it's like Caylynn said about looking & feeling good for your body type and not trying to fit some sort of unhealthy, media image of body types!! I would like to lose about 5 pounds but have struggled with the SBD as I feel sick most of the time. I have allergies to artificial sweeteners and most dairy products....which takes away about half of the things you are allowed on the SBD!! I have faithfully tried to stay on it eating the items that I can and I will admit I have cheated a couple of times (I'm only human, you know!!)....but my perserverance is waning and I'm about to "throw in the towel"!! It doesn't seem worth it to me..as I haven't lost a pound, feel sick and have no energy!! A part of me agrees with Jim about my body being in a state of rebellion...but if I actualy SAW some progress it would be the motivation for me to continue!! I know some of you will say....if nothing else...I will be healthier for changing the way I eat...and yes, you are right about that....but that isn't enough to keep me motivated to stay strong and keep the strict regimen of any phase...it just means I can cheat without feeling too guilty.
Do you think if I increase my exercise it would help facilitate more weight loss?? I am fairly active through the rest of the week. What types of exercise will bring the greatest weight loss?? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
Thanks
