The first 2 weeks was like heaven, I felt great, lost 14 lbs and it was wonderful. But then came the first day of phase 2, I ate some bran cereal and got deathly ill. My stomach hurt so bad and bloated up and I was doubled over in pain. I got very bad diarrhea and vomiting that lasted for a couple days, then I skipped a day of carbs and tried to eat some oatmeal the next day, again, sicker than the first day. A couple days later I ate some pistachios which I have eaten tons of, and I got even sicker. I threw in some white bread and crackers and some junk food and was better for 4 days. Then I ate some cashews, and bam, violently ill. I thought I would be in the hospital, that was last night. Today, my stomach is still gurgling and hurting. I just don't know what to do. I need to get off this diet and I don't know how. I have lost 20 lbs in just 3 1/2 weeks.

I don't know, but to me that doesn't sound like a normal bodily "reaction" to whole grains or nuts...Is it possible, at all, you might have a pretty nasty stomach bug? Some foods can irritate an already sick stomach. Just a thought...

How about a food allergy? Always possible.

With all this intestinal stuff, I hope you are drinking sufficient water to keep hydrated. Take care of yourself!. Maybe you should just eat bland for right now...nothing exotic or "different".

I'm an ER nurse & this doesn't sound like something from a particular food. Sounds like you may have a bug. First don't eat or drink anything for 2-3 hours, then start with something like Gatorade (as cold as you can get it). Don't guzzle it, just short sips. Big gulps will just expand your stomach & cause it to spasm again. Stick with the gatorade, flat 7up or sprite. For the next 24 hrs it's nothing but clear liquids; jello, gatorade, beef broth, etc. If you start vomiting again go back to the sips of fluids for 2 hours then try jello again. After the 24 hours introduce things like pudding, cream of whatever soup, & bland rice. You want to stay on this full liquids for another 24 hours. After that time slowly introduce solids. Don't go for anything greasy or fried, just slowly reintroduce solids. If after the 1st 36 hours your still unable to hold even a little fluid down you need to be evaluated by your physician or the Emergency Dept. Yes this may derail your diet for 2-3 days, but your overall health is the most important thing. You can pick up where you left off once you're back to 100%.

I agree with the nurse, I don't think it's the diet that is making you sick. I've never heard of eating healthy making anyone sick. I would go to the doctor if I were you.

I honestly don't think it's a bug, I mean, it started 11 days ago and came and went. Like today I ate a grilled chicken sandwich and some pretzels (I know, all not on diet), but I didn't get sick, just very gassy and my stomach just rumbles terribly. I will go to the doctor if it doesn't improve soon. I still think it's the diet and my body can't adjust. Possibly my gallbladder, but I really doubt it. I just can't figure out why the nuts make me violently ill- I have always eaten them and ate them plentifully in phase 1. Any ideas???? Thanks.

I have experienced the exact same thing this week. I did really well on P1 and didn't cheat and lost about 7 pounds- I only had 18-20 to lose in total so I was very pleased. On Monday, first day of P2, I had some oatmeal and a yogurt that day and some strawberries that night, For the next few days I added a couple of different carbs back in and by today, I am a mess. I woke up int he middle of the night with terrible stomach cramps and I have diarrhea like there is not tomorrow. Now, I live in Monterrey Mexico and I have had stomach bugs before but not for almost 2 years. I thought maybe I had picked up something then I read this thread. Is my body reacting violently to the carbs being added back in???? I was really liking diet, but I am not so sure now either. I guess I will wait and see over the next few days. Mgilbert, let me know how you do with the diet.

Good luck to you...

This type of reaction has me puzzled. There is nothing particularly odd about the types of foods one eats on phase 2.

It probably much closer to the type of foods your great grandparents ate before the advent of fast foods, frozen foods, corn syrup, prepared snacks, highly processed white flour, etc.

This should not be a particularly odd or damagaing collection of nutrients for a semi-healthy body to deal with. My guess is a food allergy or an illness unrelated to the diet.

mgilbert- you said that you had a chicken sandwhich and pretzels and felt fine. Wonder if you were to modify that a little, say a chicken sandwich on some sort of whole wheat bread, bun or wrap and had some sort of whole or shredded wheat crackers (triscuit) if you would feel ill again? I have a friend who is allergic to wheat. She has to take a pill before she eats anything that has wheat in it (forgot the name of the meds). Maybe you're allergic to something? Years ago, I used to have SEVERE food allergies, and now they have subsided, somewhat. I still carry an epipen with me all the time, just in case those food allergies decide to come back. So maybe you're starting to get them??
If Nurse is still viewing this string, maybe she can shed a little insight into food allergies.

Good luck, and I hope you end up staying on this diet, it's really a very healthy lifestyle.

sounds like a food allergy to me too. Since beginning the SBD, I have discovered that I am 'very' allergic to anything with wheat! Never knew that life could be so pleasant since I've stopped eating wheat in anything.

I've found from being on SBD that it has unmasked some hidden food allergies. I've known for 20 years that I have bad food allergies, but thought I was ok with wheat. After being off wheat for the first 2 weeks of SBD, had some by mistake and couldn't walk. Crippled my leg muscles. This was a recurrent symptom that I could never pinpoint the source. Now I know it is wheat. Didn't do much better with oats. So, now I am grain free, losing weight, and feeling so much better.

Wheat allergies...who knew? I ate wheat products everyday (basically) of my life. I had a piece of ww bread today (supposed to be D1 of P2), and it made me ill. I am going to stay on P1 for another week, as the foods really work for me. Besides, I don't know anyone who died from not eating bread!

Hope you are feeling better soon, mgilbert!

Isn't that strange how those hidden food allergies sneak up on you after P1 detoxing?! I've noticed lately that whenever I have almonds (my favorite nut - next to my boyfriend, of course!) my tongue gets all itchy! I never noticed that before! When I had gotten tested for allergies some time back I was told I was allergic to chocolate. CHOCOLATE and ALMONDS! How cruel is that when PMS rolls around!

Maybe you have food poisening????????? Sound like something that happened to me a couple years ago. Turned out to be botulism poisening. I would get a fecal sample to your doctor and have it analysed. If it is food poisening, expect a call from the health dept. Your doctor is obligated to report all cases. Good Luck!!!!

This same thing happened to me when I did Atkins last summer. After about a month, I wasn't able to eat ANYTHING without having the worst stomach pain. I was losing weight just because I couldn't eat a thing. I stopped the diet, went back to my regular eating pattern, and I was fine after a couple of days.

I have only done SBD for 2 weeks now, so I don't know what the long term effects of this will be...

I have a friend who had muscle cramps. His doctor told him to take a multivitamin and drink the diet prescribed amount of water each day while dieting.
