Wake up Call...

I have read posts about what made people 'wake up' and lose weight. There is always a moment when you just say 'oh, my gosh'. For years I have needed to lose weight, I knew it, but never wanted to, I liked food too much and figured that life was short, I should enjoy the food. Besides I never struggled with my weight, I was always small, until about 7 years ago, something happened and I have gained 10 lbs. or so a year steadily. One day my husband and went to an amusement park and sat in one of those booths that takes your picture, then the booth 'draws' your picture for you. It's not a caricature, it's an actual photo. When it came out, my husband looked great, but my face looked huge, with my fat chin and wrinkled neck. I said to him 'geesh, do I really look like that?'. He answered honestly with 'well, do I look like that?'. Yes, he did and he looked good. Altough he thinks I am still beautiful, I was mortified. I decided it was time. I wish everyone the best.

You've taken the most import step, mgilbert, by acknowledging that you have to do something. You just "flipped the switch"...the lightbulb in your head finally went off, and that is quite an extraordinary accomplishment.
You are going to do SO well!! This is the first day of your brand new life.
Congratulations, and good luck...you can do this!!

Thanks. Actually I started the diet 4 weeks ago and have lost about 20 lbs. It feels great, but still have about 50 to go.

Good for you! My moment of decision to go on SBD was after we moved into a condo 6 months ago with big mirrors! My closet doors are mirrored (try facing that early in the morning with no clothes on!), big mirrors in the bathrooms, and a mirrored wall in the diningroom. Every time I would walk by one of the mirrors, I would catch a glimpse of myself and think "I can't believe that is me!" In my last house, we only had one full length mirror! Now, 40 lbs. lighter, I actually smile when looking in the mirror. (I lost 10 lbs. from moving, all those boxes to move!) I still hate the mirrors, they always look like they need to be cleaned!!!
We all have our moments of decision, probably each one of us for a different reason. The important part is, we are doing it! And, getting healthier for doing it!
Keep up the good work.

My wake up call came at the doctor's surgery last January when I was told that my blood pressure was dangerously high. At 280 lbs and only a shade over 5' 2", it was hardly surprising. I am asthmatic too and couldn't walk anywhere without having a puff of my inhaler.

Whatever the wake up call is, if it works on you and gets you into the right frame of mind, you will diet successfully. As far as I can see, unless you have the right mindset nothing will work. Losing weight is definitely all in the mind.

Wow I am so glad you guys posted this because it has really reinforced what I knew all along. It really is all mental and once you can overcome that obstacle nothing will stand in your way. I've almost made it through 2 weeks on SBD but I've had more than one setback and hopefully when I keep remembering WHY I am doing this I will be able to stick with it!

Thanks again! I love this place!
