My disabled son is on this diet too. He was in a wreck when he was 18 that left him with one usable arm, 1 eye that has no periphreal vision every bone in his face is now titanium plates and they removed 1/2 of his stomach due to stress ulcers. His stomach has grown back now and he needs to lose 60 pounds or so but he cannot drink milk. It is the oddest thing he can eat all the cheese he wants but one sip of milk he gets very ill. For the dairy 2 cups can that be cheese or milk we are both confused on that one. Also, on the exercises he can walk but can't do any of the crunches, pushups, etc so he wants to know is walking alone ok? Thanks again

can he eat yogurt? or drink soy milk? I'm thinking more of the calorie denseness milk vs cheese. However, one of the gurus of the site said no milk was necessary [thus dashing my personal belief system!!] so if he's getting a supplement particularly for the vitamin D and calcium, maybe he doesn't have to drink it at all....

He tried yogurt and it made him very ill he threw it up within 20 min. I have no idea what to do for him to get his dairy if cheese can't be counted as dairy?

honestly I wouldn't worry about it if he can't drink milk he can't drink milk. I rarely drink a glass of milk. As long as his dr. isn't worried about getting enough calcium or vitamin D, I would just keep going with the diet without drinking milk.

i only get a bit of milk in my oatmeal

you have to do what you have to do to make this diet work for life... if that means NO MILK then so be it.

don't fret about it.

and for sure do not worry about making him do exercises he cannot do.

I dont eat dairy at all, I am severely lactose intolerant. do you have a Whole Foods near you at all?

If you do, they have a wonderful selection of edible dairy replacement products including soy milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, rice milk, etc.

Other wise, most grocery stores are starting to carry more of these products.

The only thing about not eating dairy in this diet that may suck is if you get the SB flu. Apparently dairy is the cure. Well, I have my own way of dealing with it. It is the chocolate flaxseed muffins, its like tricking yourself that you're eating a real muffin, ie carbs, thus stopping the nausea. Here is the recipe:

Chocolate Chip Flaxseed Muffins
3 eggs
1/4 cup natural applesauce
2 tbsp oil (preferably Canola)
12 packets of Splenda
3 tbsp hot coffee
1 tbsp vanilla
1 cup flaxmeal
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp baking cocoa
1/8 tsp salt
1/2 cup melted Peanut butter

Beat the 3 eggs, then add in the applesauce, oil, Splenda, coffee, vanilla, and melted peanut butter. Mix well.
In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients. add dry mixture to wet mixture and mix well.
Bake at 350
I used both small and large cupcake pans. The small cooked in about 15-20 minutes, rotating once during baking. The large cooked in 20-25 minutes, rotating once during baking. Use your best judgment, the toothpick method is the best.

Set on cooling rack immediately.

I got 5 large muffins and a whole pan of mini muffins, which I think is 12, out of this recipe.

Store in Fridge.

You can also add mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (2-3 tbsp) and 2 tbsp soy flour for better tasting muffins. You don’t even need to use the frosting, just spread a little peanut butter in the middle and eat like a sandwich.

In case you are wondering about the coffee in it, Martha Stewart recommends adding coffee in the place of hot water when baking with cocoa. It brings out the chocolate flavor more. Fun little fact for the day
