Fad Diets

My girlfriend just called me and we were talking SB. She fell off the wagon last year and wanted to hop back on after stepping on the scale and not liking the numbers. I am encouraging her to lose weight in a healthy way but in the course of our conversation, she was telling me about a diet that her co-workers are raving over. It supposedly cleanses your colon, gets rid of pounds and makes you feel better all over. After hearing this, I am thinking NO WAY!

The 10 day fasting diet

For 10 days you eat nothing but water mixed with equal parts caeyenne pepper, lemon juice and maple syrup.


I am shaking my head and just had to share this with everyone.

I think people are too concerned about weight, and not health. They look to drop the most pounds in the shortest amount of time - and these same people want to go back to their old way of eating afterward (which is why they gain their weight back). Your friend is probably thinking that this will shed a lot of pounds quickly, and that'll be the end of it.

My inspiration involved weight loss, but after watching what diabetes has done to my mother I was most concerned with overall health and longevity (I'm 40+ and have 3 young kids, I want to be around to see them grow up). Getting healthy by eating right brings about weight loss, albeit slower than these fad diets.

Too many people don't want to work for their weight loss - they'd rather pop a pill or drink some gawd-awful concoction like in the fasting diet.

Corniest fad diet: the one day diet. You starved yourself every other day (and took "vitamins" that were basically a blend of herbal stimulants). Eat what you want on the other days. Health-wise, it was awful.

It's called the master cleanse. it's been around for awhile in one form or another since the early 40s apparently. got popular again a few years ago. the "purpose" is more detox and cleansing than weight loss however.

not that anyone asked, but to me the issue is always maintainability. It seems somewhat easy to lose 10 lbs through a variety of both healthy and unhealthy means. The key is what happens after that. If you don't change anything about the way you eat and live, everything else is just a temporary solution. Even SB if you consider it as a short term solution simply to lose weight. getting to your goal weight is simply half time. whether you ultimately win or lose depends on how you play the 2nd half, not the first...

Agree completely. And I especially like the "2nd half" analogy - I'm going to use that. 8)

And the extension of it is that you really need to play the 2nd half just like you did the first half. P3 is not particularly any different than P2. That's why it's so important to find a comfort zone in P2 as you progress through it and find a way to make it not be a "diet" but something you enjoy and can see yourself maintaining as a new lifestyle and it just becomes the way you eat and live!
