Phase 1 is Miserable! I'm skipping it.

I have tried South Beach several times before and I have NEVER been able to make it through the entire 14 days. The dietary changes seem to trigger terrible migraines for me and that causes so much nauceousness and vomiting that I simply do not want to eat, and that of course only makes things worse. So this time my plan is to just skip Phase 1 and go directly to Phase 2-- that way I don't give up on SB all together and that's what we're really all after: SUSTAINABILITY and LIFESTYLE CHANGE. Does anyone else have similar problems with Phase 1? I swear last time I couldn't even look at another grilled chicken salad for a year afterwards because it just triggered so many bad memories. But does anyone see anything wrong with this plan?

Yesterday I started off with 1 c. of cottage cheese and 2 slices of rye toast for breakfast (because I wasn't really trying to do Phase 1 yet), I snacked on some almonds before lunch and then I had a a terrible grilled chicken salad  and I STILL got a bad migraine. And once the migraine hits I can't eat a damn thing because it won't stay down. Maybe I should eat beans for breakfast like the Brits do.

I'm a Brit, and I have eggs for breakfast

Seriously though - our "beans" are baked beans, full of sugar and salt and other stuff. It's not like eating a can of chick peas in water

If you WANT to eat beans/pulses at breakfast, you can. If you want a steak for breakfast, you can. There are no laws that say you have to have bread for breakfast (I can't have grains for breakfast, it gives me cravings an hour later).

Whatever you WERE eating and eliminated for P1 is the migraine trigger. If you are used to a big doughy carby chewy breakfast and suddenly switch to SB, then it's probably your body hankering after the stuff it shouldn't have. What do you eat the day before starting P1?

Also, I note that you had cottage cheese on bread for breakfast. No veggies in there. For lunch was chicken salad - you can have chicken with ANY allowed veggies, doesn't HAVE to be a "salad". Did you add your "good fats" to the salad? Did you drink lots of water? Cut down on the caffiene?

Good luck whatever you decide to do :)

Also- remember that a serving of grain usually amounts to one slice of bread. :)

As for veggies...The guidelines are to have at least 1/2c of veggies with breakfast, and 2 cups with each lunch and dinner.

Okay let's see if I can answer some of the questions...

I almost always have oatmeal for breakfast.

I don't do caffeine-- at all. So I always drink lots of water.

I definitely add good fats to my salads. I usually have a homemade vinaigrette which includes olive oil and I usually double up on the serving becuase I usually have a huge salad made of spring mix, broccoli, and carrots (normally but not now because of SB).

As far as eggs go, I simply cannot stomach eggs without some bread or something to make it into a sandwich. It's just gross.

I'm a very picky eater and I know that's part of my problem.

BTW you're totally right about the beans-- those baked beans do have a lot of sugar in them. But I was just thinking of it being a similar concept to include beans for breakfast. I just remember being in England getting beans and tomatoes with all of my breakfasts.

I'd love to have dinner for breakfast... only the dinner I'd want would be something carb loaded like lasagne ;) and obviously I can't do that.

I've never heard about not eating a particular food or kind of food causing migraines. Headaches in general, yes - people sometimes report headaches early in P1 or if they've quit caffeine. But not migraines specifically. You might want to ask your doctor about it.

It might not be so much the change in food as it is the change in routine... and changes in routine are known for causing migraines.

Low blood sugar can actually be a migraine trigger.

so can a lack of caffiene when you are addicted.

caffiene helps prevent suicide

hahaha... now I've got a comeback!!! :)

Back on topic. FWIW, I think if you work a P2 menu for a year, the first 2 weeks of P1 won't make a difference at all. JMO though. But you need to work a real P2 menu with appropriate quantities. Lasagna would be an option. If made with ww noodles (still haven't seen them in lasagna form though), and LF ricotta and mozzarella and limited to no more than 1/2 cup of pasta (1 oz) and you made it a veggie and meat lasagna with lean meat, then it would be fine I would think. Oatmeal is fine too if steel cut or old fashioned. I'd still add some protein and veggies though! Homemade chili is another option that includes beans too. Nothing wrong with "dinner for breakfast" or "breakfast for dinner" if it meets the general meal guidelines in the meal planning template IMO.

I have seen whole wheat lasagne noodles at Safeway but I haven't tried them yet. Lasagne is great with zucchini and spinach in it so I definitely could add veggies. Wow sounds like I need to go to the grocery store! I'm having lasagne for breakfast!

Caffeine is a crazy thing... for some people it gets rid of migraines and for others it's a trigger. I personally gave up caffeine because I have PCOS and caffeine can aid cyst production. And I used to drink a TON of diet soda... I probably drank a gallon per day.

so you know I wouldn't make such a statement without substantiating it!

and I am well aware that there may be alternate studies that shoot that one down, but it makes ME feel better, knowing I'd have probably strangled a drunk or two in the ER at 4 a.m. without my fix!!!!

You'd think suicidal thoughts would be a common symptom of withdrawal.
