Hi all,
I'm just starting on Phase 1 and the only thing I find difficult to avoid is alcohol, particularly in the summer with all the BBQs, after-work happy hours, get togethers with friends, etc.
To make matters worse, my mother-in-law - who I adore - really likes to drink. We frequently go sailing with them and will be on the boat with them for three days over the July 4th weekend. I know it's going to be hard to avoid drinking; I'm actually considering taking a break from SB over the July 4th holiday and then going back on it, but I also know I won't feel good about cheating.
I'm wondering if anybody has any strategies for avoiding drinking when you can't avoid situations in which people will be drinking. Have you found something to replace it with that's satisfying?
Thanks in advance for any tips and advice! |

say no...not such an easy answer is it!?!?!
i know i know it's hard to say no - take along lots of water and diet soda, tell her the alchol is hurting your stomach and your liver and you've decided to take a healthier approach to life and health; HA - tell her your preggers and can't have any.... |

i like debby's response...well except the preggo part! ;) LOL! might get someone in trouble that way! LOL!
to me, i think you just have to make the decision that you arent going to drink. its a hard decision, just like its been a hard decision for me to no eat junk at.all today...and yeah, its only been one day, but i feel great for getting (almost all the way) through it.
i wish you luck!! |

"NO thank you" always works for me
if you feel you need an excuse "i'm the designated driver" might work |

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the idea of saying I've decided to live healthier, but definitely don't want to tell my mother-in-law I'm preggers and get her hopes up for no reason. That would just be cruel. :)
It's definitely hard to avoid booze, since it's so ingrained with socializing. I think it's just a matter of breaking the habit.
Easier said than done, of course.
Chinamarie, good for you for avoiding the junk today. Good luck keeping it up! |

I just started a week ago, and I'm worried about the same thing. We're going to the beach with some friends for a few days, and we normally cook nice dinners with lots of good wine to go with them. But this time, my Phase 1 Week 2 weigh in will be the day after we get back! So, I'm taking my favorite non-alcoholic drinks and will try to be good.
One of my favorites is LaCroix sparkling water. If you haven't seen it, it comes in packs of 12 cans with lemon, lime, berry or orange natural flavor. No calories, no artificial sweetener. Very refreshing on a hot day. |

just a thought/caution, but sometimes when we decide to live healthier, others seem to find that threatening and take it personally as somehow judging their lifestyle and choices. I hope your "news" is well received in the spirit of how you intend it, but perhaps be a bit prepared for the possibility that it won't be. |

I know a guy that will drink a bottled beer, afterward he refills the beer bottle with water. So it looks like he's drinking beer for hours, but in reality he's sober and hydrated.
Just a tip if you want to look "cool" and hang out with a beer in your hand. 8) |

I completely understand your dilemma! I'm a waitress, so not only am I around lots of great food everyday, but also a few of us usually go out for drinks after work....every shift.
yesterday i woke up early and decided to make a change...so i started SBD. yesterday was P1D1 for me, and work was tough! two of the hot guys wanted to go out for a drink after our shift was over and i had to say no. i told them it's a new thing i'm trying and i can't have alcohol for 2 weeks.......it was hard!!!!!!! did i mention i'm single??? LOL |

Working in a restaurant and not drinking would be very hard - I used to waitress and my shifts would invariably end with a bunch of us winding down at the bar with a few drinks. So congrats for saying no, Jocelyn!
Thanks for the sparkling water recommendation, Josie. I find it's easier to avoid bad foods (and hopefully, drinks!) if you're prepared and have healthy alternatives at hand.
I like the beer bottle idea! Sometimes the fun of drinking is just the action of drinking itself, so I can see how drinking water out of a bottle would be satisfying. |

Snack Cakes,
If you really must, try non-alcoholic beers. Like Michelob or O'douls. My friends and family usually have non-alcoholic beers to choose from the ice chest. They went fast too. Bring some along, I would not be suprised if you are not the only one drinking them. |

Trece,
But aren't carbs the issue, rather than alcohol? Are non-alcoholic beers allowed in P1? |

I wouldn't say it's the carbs so much, more like the empty calories and the desire to snack after a couple of drinks. It also messes with your insulin levels.
(I don't get the urge to snack, it just makes me REALLY hungry the next day.) |

| I think wine is allowed in P2 - at least I hope so! I can live without beer, but wine.... ah, wine! :D |
