I tried starting the SB diet today. I am running into a problem that I had on the Atkins Diet and am wondering if anyone experiences this and how to get rid of it?
Whenever I eat veggies my stomach hurts horribly. It feels like I am filled with large amounts of air. IMy stomach aches and churns and I feel like I need to burp constantly. I have used Antacids(chewable) and they do not help. I originally thought it was all the saturated fat from the Atkins which forced me to go off the diet but I am nowrealizing it is veggies. I have never had this problem before. I REALLY want to stay with the SBD but I am miserable.
Can anyone help me who might experience this as well??!!!!
:( Thanks,
Tara |

| What type of veggies are you eating? It might be the particular type of veggies that are giving you gas (sorry to be blunt!). |

| No offensive taken :D To be honest it doesn't turn into gas I think that is the problem. It feels like their is a ton of air(gas) but doesn't go anywhere. My body tries to burp it up which makes me feel sick. The veggies ate on my last diet everyday were broccilli and mixed greens. Those are upsetting my stomach the worst. I also eat asparagus and tomatoes(tomatoes seem to do ok). I just don't understand why after 2 months on my last diet all of a sudden I started having this problem. I gave myself a few weeks off in between diets to heal my stomach. It seemed to heal up but introducing the veggies back is so painful. |

there are times that I have to eat cooked veggies for the same reason and really cut back on the salads and/or eat smaller amounts more frequently. Do you have something like GERD or just a lot of acid? There are some OTC meds that help me as well as making the dietary changes - milk helps me but makes some people worse, if I eat cheese with veggies it doesn't seem to affect me so much.
Either way, if you continue to have symptoms, make some notes about what causes what and see your doctor. |

thanks, I am starting to wonder about GERD. I had never heard of it before but I am starting to research it. I do notice it is when I eat raw veggies(I only have been eating my broccili raw) and my mixed greens. I will test out the asparagus cooked and see how it affects me. This is so frustrating!!
I can't afford to go to the doctor right now so I really appreciate all your help, Thanks!!! |

| What about limiting to V-8 or tomato juice for awhile and see if things settle down? (I always use the low sodium versions). Then introduce some of the less gassy veggies one by one to see how you reacct. Do you think that might help? |

I had the same problem once after eating a lot of raw broccoli and cauliflower. My stomach really hurt. Maybe try avoiding raw veggies and seeing if that helps...? |

| I feel your pain literally! I had the same problem for like 4 days. I think it's because our systems aren't use to so many fresh veggies and it's hard for our stomachs to process them all. What I did was limit my lettuce and eat smaller amounts of veggies at a time - especially raw veggies. It has gotten much better but I definately can't have a salad every day - so I make do with what I can have. Veggies also don't seem to bother me as much if I eat them cooked with something else. |

| I was recently diagnosed with GERD and this sounds like the beginning for me. I got it really bad. If I dont take my meds everyday I get gassy and I feel sick. I also have a burn feeling at the top of my throat. I was going to try beano but it has wheat in it. Some people cant digest "raw foods" or veggies correctly and beano has an enzyme in it. If you cant go to the doctors try getting some prilosec OTC and take 20 mg (1 pill) for a few days and if it doesnt work bump it up two pills. I have to take 40 mg because I have it bad. But you might be fine on one. Hope this helps |

| Shae, did they suggest putting the head of your bed on 4 to 6" blocks? That was a single most effective reliever for the throat burning sensation - you're refluxing as you lay flat. Adding pillows isn't the same because that causes a bend at the waist, effectively pushing the acid up instead of letting everything drain down - loose waistbands, decresed fat...and prilosec. Gotta love prilosec! even the generics! |

No they didnt. I am hoping once I find what I am allergic to it will eventually go away. Its only flares up on the new medicine I have which is protonix. I have to go through a stupid thing with the insurance for 3 different meds before they will put me back on prilosec. Because I need 40 mg a day which is two pills. They only allow one pill.
I cant even drink my orange flavored water, or have vingarette dressing! SO I use lots of tums right now. After allergy testing I am trying another medication. |

it is one of the classic treatments for GERD and amazingly effective - It also helps prevent aspiration pneumonia which is one of the big problems for chronic GERD sufferers, especially people with asthma, allergies, COPD because the coughing creates a vacuum effect in your chest cavity and increases the possibility of aspirating that acid as it refluxes up during hte night.
probably more than you want to know...but that seems to be my purpose in life - distributing odd bits of health information  |

There are special wedge-shaped pillows that gradually incline. They sell them at stores that specialize in mattresses, chairs, etc. for the back and neck. Your doctor can tell you if this would be worth trying. |
