| HELP!!! I have tried to do a google search and cannot find my answer!!! Does the SBD allow for any protien shakes / supplement shakes for snacks or quick breakfasts? I do not have time to cook in the mornings and want a quick breakfast on the go!!! I have read about the WalMart whey protein....? I purchased the no sugar added Carnation Instant Breakfast and they are awesome w/my skim milk --- however i am unsure if they are permissable. Does anyone know the answer? Thanks! |

protein supplements as a supplement to a healthy balanced dietary approach are permitted. Using a shake as a complete meal replacement is generally frowned upon here and by Dr. A.
As an aside, why do you feel you have so much less time than anyone else who works, has kids, single moms, and so forth? There are always the options of getting up a few minutes earlier, packing mobile breakfasts the night before, reheating simple SB friendly pre-made meals and probably a range of other options as well. This program does take more time and planning and effort than opening a can.
google must be ignoring us! ;) there are many, many threads on this topic here over the years. You can probably use the search function here (sucky as it is) to find a few! |

Meal replacement suplements and breakfast shake are only allowed as an EMERGENCY when you're unable to find or make "real" food, such as when you're traveling, or in P2 after working out more than 90 minutes or training for competition.
Here are the shakes approved in the Good Carbs, Good Fats Guide:
Atkins Advantage Shake, Carb Solution Shake, EAS Advantage Carb Control, Kato low Carb Shake and Slim Fast Meal Shake.
You still need to add some veggies and some cheese to go with those shakes.
Real Food is always best and must recommended.
Good luck, |

| Let me rephrase that.....I do not choose to make time and prepare breakfast in the morning AND want something convenient and quick (and NOT just eggs on Phase 1)!!! By the way RedRox....what are your credentials (obviously you are a single mom or that would not have come up!?) I've seen your postings and it appears that you have quite a bit of time on your hands. It is because I work over 70 hours per week in my line of business, have a child, husband, elderly parent that I take care of AND volunteer; that I often times do not have a lot of time to do plan for my meal; therefore "opening a can" as you put it -- is often what I have time to do! |

you can also grab a couple slices of turkey or ham, cheese, celery, grape tomatoes, can of V8, glass of milk, bean muffins - just on p1, on p2 there's even more portable quick choices....I'm fortunate that my GI system is disinclined to tolerate those breakfast drinks....everybody is busy, everybody makes choices - popping a can, making a shake or grabbing food when you throw lunch in the bag.
or get hubby to fix it for you!!!    |

you do know that it's best to take care of yourself first and therefore be healthy and strong to care for others right?
that being said part of doing this plan well is cooking and prepping for meals. if you want fast and easy maybe calorie counting where you can have a shake or a bar is better suited to your needs.
I've met Redrox... not a single mom by any stretch of the imagination. |

| the single significant counseling moment of 3 trials [I hate counselors, was married to one!!!] was being asked the question - on an airplane with your son, oxygen mask drops - what do you do first - well naturally - I'd put it on my son...wrong answer - have to take care of self first otherwise you won't be around to take care of him. A startling moment of clarity - too bad it was 4 years ago instead of 18 years!!! I've been trying to take care of everyone but me....SBD is one of the taking care of me things that makes sense. |

Well, the question was not really what RedRox recommends, but what SBD calls for:
Quote: HELP!!! I have tried to do a google search and cannot find my answer!!! Does the SBD allow for any protien shakes / supplement shakes for snacks or quick breakfasts?
To answer this question, he just has to be able to read the SBD books and answer questions about them. Any of us are qualified to do that. :)
You made some observations about needing to find something convenient for breakfast. A couple of quick non-egg breakfast suggestions:
LF/NF cottage cheese or LF/NF regular cheese or LF lunch meat or LF precooked chicken orimitation crab or lean ham plus either a few raw or cooked vegetables or a small glass of vegetable juice
black beans or pinto beans microwaved with some LF cheese and NSA salsa
Or, you could prepare food in advance and just microwave it in the morning, or eat it cold. You do not have to spend a long time cooking. (The food tends to be better and tastier and there tends to be more variety if you can cook at least sometimes, but it's not absolutely required.) There are plenty of convenient foods you can eat if you are pressed for time. |

Boogers, your life looks similar to mine from Sept to June. For me the bean muffins and V8 are a life saver. Sometimes I would remember to pour boiling water over some steel cut oats and let it soak overnight. In the morning a quick zap in the microwave gives instant breakfast.
My favourite breakfast is a a shake: Soy or cow's milk, fresh or frozen greens, fresh or frozen berries or other fruit, and ground flax seeds.
But some days, even that is too much to do, so the muffins (made on the weekend or late at nightand frozen) I can grab from the freezer and the V8 I buy in individual packs.
Sometimes I can't eat at all first thing, so I have a banana and eat a substantial meal at mid-morning. If you are not starving in the morning, the only requirement is that you get the necessary nutrients and range of foods throughout the day, so eat a bit later if it works for you.
I just find it is necessary to plan ahead for the worst case scenario, which happens too frequently - water heater quits, phone call from nursing home, vomiting child, dog eats chocolate, car won't start. You have to know what to fall back on when your head is spinning, and eventually it becomes second nature. |

| Thanks Peony!!! Life is what happens isn't it!!?? Great ideas@!!! I am looking forward to Phase 2 ---- not that I am a huge fruit fan ---- but I will remember what it was like to NOT be able to have it!!!! I don't even mind bran muffins -- so that will be a definite "make & freeze" for me!! I have 9 more days of Phase 1, hopefully it will give me a whole new perspective on the gain again. I've done Weight Watchers and never felt so restricted in my life!!! It hasn't been horrible, just a major change. Again, thanks for the ideas. Best of luck w/your journey!!! |

Not bRan muffins, bEan muffins, made with beans! They are phase 1 friendly and may seem weird at first but I love them and they are filling.

peony - i'm ready to make another batch - and since you're here!!! do you just spray muffin tins or use paper liners? My first batch in liners I lost half the crust, but second batch in tins - they still stuck, even with spray....and I picked out the crusty bits!
tip - if you do the cinnamony ones, mix some good cinnamon with splenda and sprinkle a little bit on top....yum! |
