Hi there,
Is anyone here breastfeeding and on this diet or have information about whether or not it needs to be modified for the nursing mom? I have a 14 1/2 month old that still nurses several times a day and I don't want to do anything to mess with that. tia

My wife did it ... you will be fine. Just dont go to any extremes. Make sure you get enough veggies and eat the right carbs. Take your vitamin.

You will be fine. Also realize that breastfeeding burns calories. You will have a natural tendency for weight loss when you are breastfeeding.

Oh BTW make sure you drink lots of water.

congrats on the relatively long term nursing. it's great for mom and baby...

make sure you are in phase 2 (nursing moms should not do phase 1) and that you are hydrating enough.

and unless the powers that be have changed it since I was a La Leche League Leader, feel free to enjoy that wine once in a while.

Thank you for the congratulations. I'm very glad that we are still going strong.

Thank you for the info on Phase 1, I probably would have just started with that.

I do enjoy that glass of wine every once in a while!!! The powers that be are still on the right track about wine and breastfeeding.

Congrats on being a mommy!

Every year, someone in my mom's family is having a baby, lol :) This month, two babies are actually due-- Those of my brother's wife Amy, and my cousin Amber.

On her side, I have 18 (first) aunts and uncles, and about first 40 (first) cousins.... And we all live in the same city! lol. We're a lot like the family on "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", in that we are close, always together, loud, and in each other's business all the time....

I've accompanied several pregnant family members to their checkups (because the guys didn't wanna go). Most of the time, the doctors would tell them that, while they should eat *healthy*, its best to put off weight loss regimens, until after their baby was born, and off the breast. Because your primary concern during that time is properly nurturing you baby, and there will be things you need to eat that are not part of most weight loss plans.

However, if you want to do a diet while breast feeding, I would say phase 2 of South Beach Diet would be one of the best choices (along with some really good vitamins). Because it seems to be much more nutritional, even on its own, than many others. And of course, because its healthy :)

Thanks for the congrats, although not pregnant (is there a fainiting smilie LOL) just nursing a toddler.

I have another question, why no first phase? Does it change your body chemistry or is it because there are no fruits/

TIA

phase one would be taking away the nutrients that you would normally gain from grains and fruits, it's a little lower calorie wise and limited to 2 cups of milk/day. It would be insufficient if you were supplying the majority of babies nutrition via breastfeeding.

Hi! I am nursing as well (my son turned 4 months today)!

It is recommended that you start in Phase 2 because it is important for nursing mothers to get whole grains. It is also important for us to get enough calories so that our milk supply is not diminished.

If you do wish to start with Phase 1 make sure you drink LOTS of water and eat enough calories to keep your supply up!

And by the way, you are a total rockstar for nursing this long!!! :)

Hey to a fellow kellymom (bbraymom is my profile name). I don't know how long you've been at kellymom, you will meet a ton of other extended nursing rockstars!!!! Thanks for the reply and congrats on your little one and nursing too.

I love nursing my toddler. I can say that it's really interesting somedays! The acrobatics are hilarious.

I've decided to start on the phase 1 because he isn't using nursing as his primary source of nutrition any more. I'm the snack in between his three meals a day. I don't worry much about my supply, I have oodles of milk still even at 15 months nursing.

I just wanted to chime in as well. I currently nurse a 10 month old and started with phase 2. It was kind of phase 1.5. I didnt eat any bread, pasta, rice, or potatoes. But I did eat fruit.

also wanted to say hi from another kellymom (dragonnkitten)!
