| I have just been diagnosed with insulin resistance and told I need to make dietary changes and exercise. But.... I have not been told what to do exactly :( Googling IR and diet gives me lots of conflicting info. Does South Beach Diet help with IR? Have you still lost weight successfully on this plan if you are IR? What about sweeteners? I do not use a lot of sweetener, but I do like a little in stuff such as my coffee and tea. Would stuff like honey in my tea work for example? Thanks for your help! |

Yes the SB lifestyle definately helps with IR. that is really it's #1 purpose along with improving heart health. the weight loss is more of a side effect. I self-diagnosed myself as being IR and used SB to greatly reduce triglycerides, improve HDL and lower fasting blood glucose.
I find it strange that a medical professional would diagnose you, tell you to improve your diet, but not provide any details on what that means.
I'd recommend starting with either of the original SBD book or the new SB Supercharged version to learn about how and why this program is designed to combat IR and improve heart health. In the meantime, you can review the Phase 1 (P1) food lists and the meal planning template guidelines that are linked into the P1 FAQ sticky thread near the top of the P1 forum here to get an idea of what foods you can eat during the first two weeks of P1 and how to structure them into a daily meal plan.
Basically no fruits or grain products in the first two weeks and your carbs will come from lots of vegetables, beans/legumes and dairy (milk/yogurt). You should eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks during the day to help keep blood sugars stable throughout the day. You will stick to lean protein sources, have good fats and good carbs and drink a lot of water!
In P2 you gradually reintroduce lower gylcemic fruits and whole grains with 2-3 servings of each per day in a "full" P2 and stay with that until you lose all your desired weight and are in a healthy weight range. Then you pretty much eat like that for the rest of your life! ;)
Regular exercise is important to both overcoming IR and weight loss and overall health, so the new "supercharged" book pays more explicit attention to that where before it was more of an implied thing.
Good luck! It's a great eating plan and very doable as a lifestyle for your health and well being! |

| I agree w/ RedRox. It's absurd that no information was given to you. Buy South Beach Supercharged as it explains WHY and HOW in laymen's terms. Best of luck to you. |

I too self-diagnosed myself but as pre-diabetic. I am still hovering just under the pre-diabetic mark which scares the daylights out of me.
I am a 26 yr old mom and wife who for my height weighs too much although if you look at me you would never know. My cousin married a wonderful lady who is a Registered Dietician and while speaking with her about my weight, blood sugar levels, etc. I also told her I was reading up on South Beach. At that moment she told me that not only does she completely agree with DR. A she also thinks it would be an excellent and healthy lifestyle change for me. Under her watchful eye I've started the program and made adjustments where necessary.
I haven't seen a change in my sugar levels yet BUT I'm only on Day 10 and am going to hold out until I lose at least 25 lbs which puts me at a healthier weight range.
Good Luck to you and your IR journey hope this Lifestyle suits you as well as it does me! |

I too was told by my doctor that I was insulin resistant and was given very little in the way of information. I was told to diet and exercise but not told what to do for diet. I asked if I should talk to a dietician and my doctor said that it wouldnt be necessary just go out and walk and watch what you eat. It is very unfortunate that was the respnse the medical community give people. Unfortunately for me I have been in a huge backslide for the past two weeks but this is a new day and I will be successful in getting back on the SB track. Good luck to all.

That's too bad! "Watching what you eat" can mean any number of things.
I reversed my insulin resistance by going on SB. I have to stay on it, of course, or it will come back with a vengeance! I feel too good and enjoy too many benefits of eating this way to stop, anyway. It does require constant vigilance. |

Thanks for your imput Kimboroni. It is very frustrating not to get the answers you need from the medical community. I just ordered SB Supercharged on line and cant wait to read it. I really need to get on track especially because many of my family members are diabetic and family history is part of it.

hehehe... reminds me of an afternoon on Nag's Head beach a number of years ago with my wife. We had tried soft shell crab sandwiches for lunch not realizing they were basically the whole little crab breaded and fried with the legs sticking out the sides of the bun. When we went back to the beach afterwards and saw the little critters running around on the sand, I remarked, "Look honey, there goes lunch!" So yeah, we were watching what we had been eating! OK. it's late and you probably had to be there... |

I was recently diagnosed w/ insulin resistance - my NP gave me a whole list of stuff I couldn't have, bread, rice, pasta, cake, cookies, etc. She also recommended a few supplements, one of them chromium picolinate to help manage blood sugar, you may want to check that out if you haven't already. I actually couldn't see myself NEVER having that stuff again, so I did some internet research and that's how I found SB...so far, so good, lost 11 lbs in phase 1 and feeling GREAT! (i'm in week 2 of phase 2).
I go back to see the NP in August...hopefully things will be better from her point of view!
Good luck!

DITTO WHAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS SAID...
but I will add NO HONEY... I know honey has health benefits but not if you are Insulin resistant. And no juice.
Southbeach is the best way of eating for IR. hope you enjoy the book and get a lot out of it! |
