:?:
I have just started the plan yesterday and my new Supercharged book arrived today. I was looking at the Foods to Enjoy and Avoid pages. I am confused. The foods to avoid list bacon, yet one of the soup recipes in the book states you can have it on phase 1 and includes bacon?
I have notice many users on this site list bacon in their breakfasts but assumed it was based on the old book? Is bacon allowed or not and if it is, what is the limit on how much you should have? |

No regular bacon. You can have Canadian bacon and soy based "bacon" if it meets the guidelines:
MEAT SUBSTITUTES (SOY BASED)
Unless otherwise stated, look for products that have 6 grams of fat or less per 2-3 ounce serving
Soy Bacon |

| Only turkey bacon or canadian bacon, is recommended. (and presumably soy based bacon?) Regular belly bacon is too high in saturated fats to be part of a healthy diet. I don't know why it would be included in a SB recipe unless it was the fake stuff like bacon bits or was assumed to be turkey bacon or the amount was so small as to not significantly affect the overall saturated fat per serving, i.e. simply used for flavoring but the turkey bacon would do that too. 2-3 slices would be an appropriate serving size to me. I believe it's listed in the food list under Poultry. |

Thanks for the info. I have no idea what Canadian bacon is but I have used turkey bacon in the past as a substitute so will probably go for that.
I want to have a proper English breakfast on Sundays so I don't feel deprived when my other half has his. (Minus toast and baked beans of course)
Thanks again! |

| Sorry, forgot you were in the UK. Canadian bacon is an american term for back bacon or peameal bacon. Really just a form of a lean breakfast ham and not anything like a "streaky" bacon at all. |

| I switched to turkey bacon years ago b/c of the flavor difference. I do eat 2 slices of bacon with eggs almost every morning. |

Back bacon is fine. That's all we usually have as we both hate bacon rind. I may still stick to the turkey bacon as it's still healthier in terms of salt content.
I'm not stuggling yet but am dreading going to Italy in 10 days. I will still have 3 days left of phase 1...pizza, pasta, paninis...Arrggg! I'm not a big pizza fan really and the salads and seafood choices are always great over there.
To avoid falling off the wagon altogether, does anyone think I should go onto phase 2 whilst I am there? I'll be on day 11 the first day of my holiday.
We will be getting loads of exercise during the dayas we will be rock climbing and mountain biking as well as swimming etc? It's the evenings that concern me. |

I usually stick to the back bacon here as well. Most types here have far less sodium than the turkey bacon, but either are fine for SB purposes. It's the streaky stuff that we try to avoid.
I'd try not to "dread" a trip to Italy. Do the best you can and return to full SB eating when you get back. I'm not a good person to ask as I tend to do a lot of "souvenir eating" on my vacations. But I'd just try to maximize the good foods (this is very similar to a mediterranean diet after all), and minimize the off plan foods. |

yeah, your'e right, I shouldn't be dreading it. I'll just try and be sensible.
I just didn't want to do well for 10 days then put it all back on. It might be that by the time I go, I am ok without having gorgeous, warm, crusty, buttered bread to dunk in my lovely soups :)
Thanks again |

Well I live in Italy and I am finding that it's easy to stick to the diet here most of the allowed cheeses and veggies are "normal" foods plus olive oil and balslamic vinegar- on the other hand phase 1 here w/o wine is a little more difficult but I have been doing just fine! |

That's very encoraging, knowing that someone who lives in italy manages to avoid all those lovely breads and pasta dishes. Thanks for the info.
I will be on day 11 as I said the first day of my hols and do not intend going w/o a glass of one of the many gorgeous red wines with my evening meal. That's as far as I am prepared to venture off the plan for the last days of phase 1 but I am not too worried as we are up for loads of activitties whilst we are there.
I don't miss the starchy carbs at all actually. After work when my friends were eating nachos and drinking alcohol, I had a small chicken salad w/o the bread and had a offee. It wasn't easy but definitely worth it. |
