Watermelon is one of the foods with the highest GI (72).
That's why it's so "good".

Actually, if you have been in P2 and P3 for a while you could have some watermelon once in a blue moon, like once in 2-3 months. It's listed as Very limited in the Good Fats and Good carbs guide.

For sure you can replace it with any of the other melon family fruits like cantaloupes and honey dew.

Watermelon has a high GI but a very low GL. It's one of the fun contradictions within SBD, which tends to be rigid about some rules and ridiculously arbitrary about others. A normal serving of watermelon will provide very little carbohydrate/sugar. Eat intelligently.

jams, this is like the MCT issue. All the information I can find on MCTs indicates that they can be a very healthful addition to the human diet, but we can't get over the saturated fat stigma.

What's MCT?

MCT = medium-chain triglycerides fats, which are derived from coconut oil.

I was glad that this question was posted. I too was wondering about the whole watermelon issue.

Is it on the "banned" List simply because of the high GI index and it may cause cravings? There isn't too much in watermelon...
Not being trite. just trying to figure this out.

Thanks all!

I thought watermelon had a lot of sugar in it and that was why it was so high on the GI list. Either way, I've been avoiding it and miss it. Love me some watermelon especially this time of year.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure it has always been on the Avoid list. The P2 avoid list is new to this site, but watermelon was always on it. "eat intelligently" is always good advice along with "eat mindfully" and "see what works best for you".

Ok quick question. Is half of one of those small round watermelons to much? Not the normal size ones the ones that look like toy ball size.

Watermelon is listed as avoid in P1 and Very Limited in P2 and P3.
Meaning once in a "blue moon", or as defined in the GGGC guide:"once every 2 to 3 months, the serving size is 1 cup.

It's up to you to decide what to do with this information.

Just a note, watermelon is one of the best food a diabetic can eat..and oatmeal. I am often reminded of this by my Mother in Law. Her husband, herself and my husband are diabetic. Although they are type 2, my husband is type 1. I am not sure how you would deal with one doctor saying it is wonderful for you and another saying it isn't. I am not that fond of the stuff myself.
