| Hi...I just started phase 2 today and was very excited to finally have cereal in the morning...I bought a box of 100% whole grain Cherrios.....After I ate them I was reading the phase 2 forum and I checked the box and sure enough it has corn syrup...it is still 100% whole grain so I dont know if it is ok.....Also is there any one else here from Canada....I find it frustrating to see brands etc that we cant buy here...Any suggestions? |

| even without the corn syrup, the problem is that they are puffed which increases the GI and there isn't enough fiber. You need all whole grains, more than 5 gms of fiber and less than 8 gms of sugar. Cheerios only meets 1 or 2 of those criteria I think. |

It's frustrating to see something advertised as "100% ____" and then finding out "100% ____ " is just one of many ingredients. Unfortunately, there's no substitute for reading the ingredients (and, when it comes to cereal, the nutrition information too).
Regardless of the brand name, you can always eat old fashioned oatmeal or Irish/steel cut oats (the kind you have to cook, not instant).
Here's a thread about kinds of cereal:

I start phase 2 tomorrow. Picked up some Kashi Cereal that is new. Its 7 whole grain flakes. I am unsure about this cereal as I read when I got home its has white rice in it. The Go Lean and Good Friends seemed to have more sugar and little fiber in them. Even though this has white rice is it still okay. I need some cereal in my diet. Help!

Kashi Go Lean (not the Crunch) has 10 gms of fiber and 6 gms of sugar and 13 gms of protein in a 1 cup/52 gm. serving. http://www.kashi.com/products/good_friends_cereal_original
Good Friends has 12 gms of fiber and 9 gms of sugar and 6 gms of protein in a 1 cup/53 gm. serving. http://www.kashi.com/products/good_friends_cereal_original
So not sure why you felt they had "little fiber" since both have more than the 7 grain flakes. Both of those use corn meal and flours, so probably no worse than the white rice in the 7 grain flakes. In any case, cut the serving size back to 3/4 cup to make it closer to a 1 oz serving size. Or use whatever the suggested serving size is for "calorie watchers" or whatever they call it on the package these days. But a full cup is too big for SB purposes. Even the food lists recommend smaller portions of the Go Lean and the Good Friends. |

Must have been the Newmans Own or some others.! I read so many boxes yesterday. I remember why I didnt choose those was the corn meal. Thanks for your suggestion of changing the cup size.
Off to eat my cereal. |

I had a bowl of cereal today. Bite size Shredded wheat. I can have a whole 1 ¼ c !!!
My 'problem' is bread! Every 'whole wheat' I pick up ends up being whole wheat flour.
Anyone want to throw a name brand or two my way? |

Do you mean "wheat flour"? Whole wheat flour is fine.
It's white flour you will want to avoid. The list of ingredients usually calls white flour "wheat flour," "enriched flour," "unbleached flour," or something like that, without the word "whole". |

could be wrong but i didn't think plain shredded wheat had enough fiber and the recommended one was shredded wheat and bran from post. or maybe that was the one you had?
look for 100% whole wheat. although we had a discussion about that somewhere recently too. it's easier to find all whole wheat breads these days, the problems seem to be more with the amount of fiber, the serving sizes and the amounts and types of added sugars, HFCS, etc. I agree finding a good SB friendly bread is a real challenge for most! |

I'm in Ontario, and I find that although we don't have the same brands, we have a lot of much healthier off-brands because Canadians tend to be more sincerely health-conscious rather than diet-minded.... more permanent than temporary fixes. And depending on where you live, you can get a lot of Middle-Eastern and Greek food which are generally less refined, if perhaps fattier. I'm in Ottawa, so it's fairly diverse, but I don't know much about what it's like throughout the Province. |

They know that most cold cereals have some sugar. Please review the posted guidelines as restated here (from earlier in this thread):

(emphasis mine)
I wouldn't eat something with 7gms of HFCS, but there are plenty of other choices off of the cereal list in my FAQ (linked above by Magna) that have other types of sugar. I don't know that modified corn syrup is particularly better than HFCS. |

Multi-grain Life cereal is okay, and President Choice brand all-bran cereal is great for you. :D |

Just to be clear, shredded wheat cereal (made only from whole wheat) is OK. The Good Fats/Good Carbs book lists it as "good" for P2 and P3. That said, you could do better by getting shredded wheat and bran. Or, I think, you could also add some wheat germ/bran to your shredded wheat.
The Good Fats/Good Carbs book also lists Cheerios as "limited," for P2, meaning they're OK about once a week. But again, you could do better. |
